Natural hot springs (onsen) are very popular in Japan. The number of hot springs is very large since Japan lies in a region where several continental plates meet. Many towns with hot springs have become large touristic resorts. Hot springs can be found outdoors and indoors. Also many public baths use the water of hot springs. Some hot springs can be found in the middle of the idyllic nature. Because of the minerals in the water, hot springs are believed to have the power of healing. In Japan it is more usual to bath in the water than to drink it. Taking a bath in a hot spring is extremely relaxing.
