Taking a bath is very important for the Japanese. It serves especially for relaxing.

Public baths (sento) exist since the Edo period and have been important in the past when not every private house was equipped with a bathroom. Nowadays, the number of public baths is decreasing. Therefore, many modern public baths try to attract more people by offering additional features like saunas and fitness centers.

One does not wear bathing trunks in a Japanese sento, and men and women take their baths in separate halls.
