Japan lies in one of the earth's most active earthquake zones. Earthquakes, volcanoes, and a huge number of hot springs are the result.
Therefore, small earthquakes are considered nothing special in Japan. During active periods, noticeable earthquakes may occur almost everyday.

In the history of Japan, many parts of the country have experienced strong, devastating earthquakes. The worst earthquake hit the Kanto plain around Tokyo in the year 1923. Over 90,000 people died in the Great Kanto Earthquake.

In January 1995 a strong earthquake hit the city of Kobe. The Southern Hyogo Earthquake (also called Great Hanshin Earthquake) killed 5,500 and injured 415,000 people. 100,000 houses were completely and 185,000 partially destroyed. Most sensational was the collapse of the city highway which was thought to be earthquake proof.

Much money is put into earthquake research. Scientists are seeking for methods that may enable predictions of earthquakes someday in the future and ways to improve the security of buildings. The construction regulations for new buildings are already very strict.
