Cherry Blossoms

Nature

The cherry blossom is a symbol and the national flower of Japan. It has been celebrated for many centuries, and has become an important object in many arts.

There are various kinds of cherry trees that bloom during different times of the year; but the majority of trees blooms in spring during only about ten days.
The Japanese celebrate this time of the year with o-hanami (flower viewing) parties under the trees and in the parks where they make pick-nicks, drink sake, and sometimes even do karaoke.

Due to the large north-south extension of Japan, the cherry blossoms bloom at different times throughout the country: In Okinawa they start blooming as early as January, reach Tokyo usually in April, and finally bloom in Hokkaido in May.
Television stations and newspapers show maps that prognosticate where the trees are blooming when.

Many tourists travel to Kyoto and other famous places when the trees are blooming. The city of Kyoto with all its shrines and temples during the sakura season may be considered the ultimate tourist attraction of Japan.

Please note that we have a special category dedicated to the cherry blossoms in our photo gallery.
