Watching television is very popular in Japan. In many households, the television is turned on practically always when somebody is at home.
Cable TV is not common. With a room antenna one can receive about seven channels in Tokyo. Besides the national NHK exist several private TV stations and some pay TV channels.

Dramas, news, sport programs and shows are the most popular program types.

Many games and ideas of Japanese shows are very original while many other shows try to teach the viewers something about nature, history, science, or other cultures. It is not uncommon that the most popular entertainers appear during prime time in rather scientific programs on commercial channels.

"Wide Shows" are programs for housewives and are broadcasted during the whole morning and afternoon on several channels. They offer a variety of topics like fashion, marriages between celebrities, etc.

After watching television for a few weeks, you will soon recognize a few entertainers who appear very frequently on several different shows and even on different channels.

Imported movies and series are mostly broadcasted on pay TV channels. Most of them can be watched in either the original language or in Japanese.
Some news programs are broadcasted in Japanese and English. Your television, however, must be equipped with the bilingual mode.
