  10.                               REGISTRATION FEES
  11.  
  12.      As of June 1993, registration and site license fees for VDE (including 
  13. the new spelling checker) have increased; see VDE.DOC.  For information on 
  14. updating existing registrations, see ORDER.FRM.

  16.                 GENERIC (ANSI.SYS) SUPPORT DROPPED IN VDE 1.7
  17.  
  18.      VDE no longer offers a Generic installation (for DOS screen output via 
  19. ANSI.SYS) on non-PC compatibles.  Limited support will continue for some time 
  20. for VDE 1.65 as the last version to run on non-compatibles.  If you are unable 
  21. to run the current version of VDE, you can order a copy of VDE 1.65C.

  23.                           FOREIGN LANGUAGE VERSIONS
  24.  
  25.      Several foreign language versions of VDE are under development; one, 
  26. Finnish, is now available, with full documentation.  Please write if you need 
  27. a specific foreign version, or are interested in collaborating to produce one.

  29.                       NEW DEDICATED HP95/100LX VERSION
  30.  
  31.      Although "PC compatible", the Hewlett-Packard 95/100LX palmtops are still 
  32. different enough from ordinary PCs that extensive customization (beyond a 
  33. level that would be reasonable for VDE, as general purpose PC software) is 
  34. necessary for an editor to work optimally on them.  As of June 1993, such a 
  35. version of VDE, called "fastWRITE", is offered as a retail product by ACE 
  36. Technologies.  Like most PC software, VDE can still be used on LXs, but those 
  37. whose primary need is for an editor for the LX should consider fastWRITE, 
  38. which offers in addition:
  39.        * special HP LX-style command menus invoked by MENU key
  40.        * custom 40-column messages, no horizontal scrolling required
  41.        * full multitasking (popup/hotkey) ability under SWITCH! 2.0 API
  42.        * awareness of HP LX serial port power and light sleep features
  43.        * support for all 100LX video modes and "hotkey zoom"
  44. Registered VDE users will be eligible for a discount toward purchase of

  50. ---------------------------------UPDATE GUIDE---------------------------------

  53.      The following is a quick guide, for users of previous versions of VDE, to 
  54. noticeable changes in operation.  Please check VDE.REF and VINST.REF for full 
  55. details.
  56.  
  57.      VDE 1.71A corrects several minor problems in VDE 1.71.
  58.  
  59.  
  60.                                 NEW IN VDE 1.71
  61.  
  62.      * The VDE program has been converted from .COM to .EXE form.  This offers 
  63. greater simplicity and allows better for future enhancements.  Also, there is 
  64. no longer a separate VDEOPT.DAT file required for the AltE command.
  65.  
  66.      * A new macro command Esc? temporarily accepts input directly from the 
  67. keyboard.  The header's macro flag "!" turns into "?" when user input is 
  68. expected.  The cursor remains in the text, and anything except macro and 
  69. function key commands may be used.  [Esc] terminates input, returning control 
  70. to the macro.  ^[Break] aborts.
  71.      A new command Esc: causes the following single command to take input 
  72. directly from the keyboard.  The macro resumes when that command finishes.
  73.      The macro chain command Esc& now has a variant Esc&& which calls another 
  74. macro definition, then returns to the original one.  Calls may be nested up to 
  75. 4 deep.  See MACRO PROGRAMMING.
  76.  
  77.      * The old style "Esc key" macros, which some users felt had mnemonic 
  78. value, have been reinstated as aliases for function keys.  When you define a 
  79. function key you have the option to designate a key (A-Z,0-9) which may also 
  80. be used to invoke that macro definition.  These aliases are stored as part of 
  81. the key definitions in a .VDF file.  See MACRO KEYS.
  82.  
  83.      * There are now 16 variable tab stops, rather than 8.  Also, the Esc-Tab 
  84. command (for variable tab in hard tab mode) has been replaced with Alt-Tab.
  85.  
  86.      * The screen shift commands, formerly Esc-arrow key, are now Alt-arrow 
  87. key, and work only with the grey arrows of the AT keyboard.
  88.  
  89.      * The MenuBar {sCreen:} selection has been renamed to {View:}.
  90.  
  91.      * The default key definitions now include F10=Menu as well as F1=Help.

  95.      * In addition to the new "Esc key" aliases, function key definitions now 
  96. offer twice as much available space.  VINST can read and convert .VDF files 
  97. from previous versions.

  102.                       VDE 1.7 UPDATE SUMMARY (Jun 1993)
  103.  
  104.      * VDE offers an integrated spelling checker for registered users.  AltH 
  105. checks one word, AltJ checks the rest of a document.
  106.      * A new command ^OU toggles display of function key labels on the bottom 
  107. line of the screen.
  108.      * There is no more "MenuBar MODE", determining how the [Esc] key 
  109. functions.  Instead, the menus are always available, invoked by ^[Esc] or 
  110. L.Shift-Esc.
  111.      * The "Macro keys" Esc0-Z, which existed to support non-PC compatibles, 
  112. have been removed, along with ".VDK files".  The autoexec macro Esc0 has been 
  113. replaced by the ability to designate any one of the function keys as autoexec.  
  114. The Esc& command now requires a function keyname, for example "Esc&^F7" to 
  115. chain to Ctrl-F7.
  116.      * The Esc$ command has a new argument, "$" (Esc$$), to cancel special 
  117. error handling in macros, returning to halting on any error.
  118.      * The print command ^KP now reads an empty init string ('' alone) as a 
  119. request not to send the init string built into the driver.  If desired, this 
  120. can be followed (after a space) by another non-empty init string '...', to use 
  121. as a substitute.
  122.      * The find/replace functions ^QF/^QA now use option "I" for Ignore-case 
  123. (instead of "U"ppercase as before).  Also, ^QA no longer has an "A"lign 
  124. option; realignment simply depends on whether AutoFormat is on.
  125.      * The menubar selection {File:neW} now performs the ^KD function, not ^KL 
  126. (it saves the current file, instead of abandoning it).
  127.      * Several minor changes in key usage have been made, including ^[Break] 
  128. (instead of ^U as before) to abort command input.
  129.      * A new version 1.2 of the CTRLCAPS utility provides a complete swap of 
  130. functions between the [Ctrl] and [CapsLock] keys.  Many users requested this 
  131. change from the previous dual function of the [CapsLock] key.
  132.  
  133.                                   VINST 1.7
  134.  
  135.      * The "Generic ANSI.SYS" installation is no longer available.  As of VDE 
  136. 1.7B, the HP95LX and 100LX palmtops are no longer automatically detected; they 
  137. must be selected as "not-quite-compatibles" in VINST.
  138.      * There are three new User Options: to prompt for a filename to edit if 
  139. none was specified on the command line; to choose the character to use for the 
  140. strikeout effect (^PX); and to determine whether Cut (AltC) also deletes the 
  141. block.  There is no longer a choice for the function of the ^[BkSp] key.
  142.      * VINST offers new printer drivers for Canon Bubblejet and LBP laser 
  143. printers, and the C.Itoh 8510/NEC 8023 dot matrix printer.
  144.      * VINST 1.7 can, as usual, read and convert .VDF files from previous 
  145. versions.  Because their internal structure was identical, you can also rename 
  146. any .VDK files to ".VDF" and read them as function key definitions.
  147.      VINST 1.7A will now allow you to enter a function key definition up to 
  148. 255 bytes long (not just 127); and when editing definitions, [Enter] alone now 
  149. works as it does elsewhere, leaving the existing definition (or label, or Q/N 
  150. option) unchanged.  To blank (remove) the definition, use ^[Enter].  To blank 
  151. the label or Q/N status, use [Space].

  156.                       VDE 1.65 UPDATE SUMMARY (Feb 1993)
  157.  
  158.      * There is a new "Protected mode", toggled by the command ^KO, that 
  159. engages automatically if you load a file with the DOS R/O attribute.
  160.      * In the File Browser, the plus key "+" acts to tag or untag files, and 
  161. you can invoke the Browser from the command line by entering VDE with a 
  162. command like VDE *.DOC.
  163.      * You can add a page/line number in square brackets "[]" after a filename 
  164. to go to (^QI) that position immediately upon loading the file.
  165.      * A number of MenuBar entries have been redesigned.
  166.  
  167.                                  VINST 1.65
  168.  
  169.      * The quote key used by VINST for alphanumeric data entry in hex strings 
  170. is now ['], which most people think of as the "single-quote", instead of [`] 
  171. as before.  Also, the double-quote ["] can now be used to duplicate the pre- 
  172. existing value.

  176.                       VDE 1.64 UPDATE SUMMARY (Aug 1992)
  177.  
  178.      * ^KM (not ^PZ) now sets a place mark.  ^QM (not ^QZ) goes to a place 
  179. mark.  ^PZ now inserts an actual ^Z, as you would expect.
  180.      * Filemode /A is now truly ASCII text, and does NOT interpret control 
  181. codes as printer commands, allowing them to display and print directly.  A new 
  182. filemode /D (Document) is now the default; it DOES interpret control codes.
  183.      * There is a new find/replace option "W" for "whole word only".
  184.      * Different .VDI (installation) files can now be loaded with the AltU 
  185. command, or with a semicolon on the command line.
  186.      * Block write (^KW) now offers a choice of Overwrite or Append if the 
  187. named file already exists.
  188.      * The Esc* command has a new toggle "X,x" to control margin release.
  189.      * Print toggles/switches (^PS, etc) always insert in document modes, 
  190. rather than overstriking, regardless of INSERT status.
  191.      * Prompt input now uses ^Y (not ^X) to erase the entire entry.
  192.      * The ^QT command will report "not found" if the given character doesn't 
  193. occur -- unless it is ^Z.  ^QT^Z will still delete to the end.
  194.      * In the file browser, pressing [Esc] returns you to the ">dir" prompt, 
  195. where another directory or filespec may be given; press [Esc] again to exit.
  196.      * VDE is now DESQview aware.  It will multitask more efficiently, and no 
  197. longer needs special installation to handle direct screen writes.  See 
  198. MULTITASKING and SCREEN SIZE for further information.
  199.      * Backup (.BAK) files are handled more like they were before 1.63: every 
  200. MANUAL save (^KS,^KX etc) once again updates the BAK file.  Autosave does not.
  201.  
  202.                                   VINST 1.64
  203.  
  204.      * The printer driver "Reserve header space?" option has been replaced by 
  205. "Top margin if header used" and "Lines between header and text".
  206.      * There is a new User Option to select a default right justification 
  207. setting for documents (on or off).
  208.      * There is a new (separate) screen color for error messages.
  209.      * The Generic installation now asks whether it will be running on an IBM 
  210. PC.  Answer Yes to allow display of PC graphics characters.
  211.      * Screen colors for the HP95LX are still distinct from the IBMPC colors, 
  212. but are now also user-changeable.  To change them you must run VINST on the 
  213. 95LX (still selecting the "IBMPC" installation).
  214.      * There is a new 132-column installation option "T" for Trident SVGA.
  215.      * As of 1.64C, VINST can accept and display PC keystrokes like [PgUp] in 
  216. macro key definitions.

  220.                       VDE 1.63 UPDATE SUMMARY (Jun 1992)
  221.  
  222.      * There is a new command ^\.  Like ^L, it repeats the last find/replace, 
  223. but in the opposite direction.
  224.      * Whatever macro you have assigned to the key Esc0 will now run 
  225. automatically whenever you first enter VDE.  See AUTOEXEC MACRO.
  226.      * A pair of new macro test commands, Esc< and Esc>, allow comparison of 
  227. characters by ASCII values.
  228.      * New synonyms for commands formerly unusable in macros or Generic 
  229. Terminal mode: ^O= for [5], ^Q- for Shift[Tab], Esc^R/^C for ^[PgUp/Dn].
  230.      * When an error message displays, it is no longer necessary to press 
  231. [Esc]; it will disappear after 1.5 seconds, or upon your next keystroke.
  232.      * Block commands (except ^KV,^KPB) will now work if the block is only 
  233. half marked; they will mark the cursor position as the other end of the block 
  234. first, then execute.
  235.      * The help menu (^J) now has a new page (press "F") listing all the file 
  236. modes.  A new mode /F is for WordPerfect 5.x (/P remains for 4.x).  The mode 
  237. for WordStar 5.x is now /S (not /5) to avoid confusion.
  238.      * The variable tab set and clear commands (^OI,^ON) both now accept a 
  239. simple list "n1,n2..." of columns to add or clear several tabs.   To clear all 
  240. tabs, type ^ON* (not, as before, ^OI# or ^OI@).
  241.      * A new option, "M"=multi-file, has been added to the find/replace 
  242. commands (^QF/^QA), to allow these functions to run in sequence through every 
  243. file currently being edited.
  244.      * There is a new Print option "R" to reverse the "Reserve header space" 
  245. choice in the printer driver.  Printing can now be paused by pressing any key 
  246. other than [Esc].
  247.      * It is no longer necessary to type "SHELL" to enter a DOS shell via the 
  248. AltR command; simply hit [Enter].  ([Esc] or ^U cancel.)
  249.      * The File Browser's (^KF) behavior and command keys have been revised in 
  250. several respects.  See FILES for details.
  251.      * The graphics function (AltG) has a new command "-", which clears all 
  252. graphics definitions not currently in use; and "=" will redefine a previously 
  253. defined graphic, if it is not in use.
  254.      * In document modes, print codes are now ignored when counting columns.  
  255. This affects tabs, vertical cursor movements, and column number display.
  256.      * VDE detects the HP95LX automatically, and performance is improved.
