  2.                                THE CONQUEROR WORM

  5.        Lo! 'tis a gala night
  6.          Within the lonesome latter years!
  7.        An angel throng, bewinged, bedight
  8.          In veils, and drowned in tears,
  9.        Sit in a theatre, to see
  10.          A play of hopes and fears,
  11.        While the orchestra breathes fitfully
  12.          The music of the spheres.
  13.  
  14.        Mimes, in the form of God on high,
  15.          Mutter and mumble low,
  16.        And hither and thither fly-
  17.          Mere puppets they, who come and go
  18.        At bidding of vast formless things
  19.          That shift the scenery to and fro,
  20.        Flapping from out their Condor wings
  21.          Invisible Woe!

  23.        That motley drama- oh, be sure
  24.          It shall not be forgot!
  25.        With its Phantom chased for evermore,
  26.          By a crowd that seize it not,
  27.        Through a circle that ever returneth in
  28.          To the self-same spot,
  29.        And much of Madness, and more of Sin,
  30.          And Horror the soul of the plot.

  32.        But see, amid the mimic rout
  33.          A crawling shape intrude!
  34.        A blood-red thing that writhes from out
  35.          The scenic solitude!
  36.        It writhes!- it writhes!- with mortal pangs
  37.          The mimes become its food,
  38.        And seraphs sob at vermin fangs
  39.          In human gore imbued.

  41.        Out- out are the lights- out all!
  42.          And, over each quivering form,
  43.        The curtain, a funeral pall,
  44.          Comes down with the rush of a storm,
  45.        While the angels, all pallid and wan,
  46.          Uprising, unveiling, affirm
  47.        That the play is the tragedy, "Man,"
  48.          And its hero the Conqueror Worm.
