OCR: Who Needs Immortality ?, by Dr Roney 0 1/08 Immortality - Impossible or Only Impractical? Most people have an idea that the human lifespan is gradually increasing. It is a common misconception and the reasoning behind it goes like this! 100 years or so ago, the average age that people lived to was about 45 and now it's 75, ergo in another 100 years most people will live to be 105. This is, fortunately, wrong, The clue to the mistake is in the word average: in the 19th century there were still plenty of octogenarians (and older), but because so many more people died before they were twenty, the average was greatly reduced. Now, with better health care from birth, more people live to their natural dying age of around 80, so the average looks a lot better, The longest lifespans (over 100 years) are still approximately the same. It is possible to stay healthy and active, fit in mind and body, until the ripe old age of 100. Almost anyone can do it; it just involves not smoking, having a healthy diet, getting plenty of exercise, keeping a low alcohol intake and avoiding stress if possible. However, most people can't be bothered to lead such a "boring" lifestyle, even for the reward of 20 extra active years! they want an easy way to stop the body's decline - a pill to take, or an operation, or an elixir of life, MENU GOTO HELP
