  15.            I ma
  16. rked the date down on the calendar.  On midnight of the 
  17.       27th (or Thurs
  18. day morning, January 28th) I was heading home down 
  19.       my driveway when I saw these 4 lights off to the right of Ika 
  20.       Island.  There was 3 oran
  21. ge lights and a red light.  I saw the 
  22.       lights to the right of the islan
  23. d, over the mouth of the [North 
  24.       Fork of the] Skagit River [near the to
  25. wn of La Conner, 
  26.       Washington].  I thought, well, the Indians fish in th
  27. e river for 
  28.       Steelhead--gillnetting--and I thought, it must be somebody 
  29. was 
  30.       missing and the Navy was out looking for them in a helicopter.  
  31.       So I hopped out of the car 
  32. and ran in the house and grabbed my 
  33.       binoculars.
  34.       
  35.            I co
  36. uld see it was no helicopter and I could have heard it 
  37.       if it was becau
  38. se the next night one came by, and I could hear 
  39.       it from here to there.  
  40. So then I put the spotting scope [45x] 
  41.       on it and I couldn't see very g
  42. ood with it because it was very 
  43.       fuzzy.  I should have probably turned it down [it was set on the 
  44.       highest power], but I didn't think a
  45. bout it, you know.  So I 
  46.       just grabbed my binoculars and started lookin
  47. g and I thought, 
  48.       well, maybe there are some houses there I don't know 
  49. about, but 
  50.       I knew there were no houses in that direction.
  51.

  53. I watched for 10-15 minutes.  The orange lights got 
  54.       brighter and dimme
  55. r while the red light stayed pretty much the 
  56.       same.  I thought, "well, that sure is odd", and I kept 
  57. trying to 
  58.       figure it out.  I could also see a little bit of white light 
  59. out 
  60.       of the bottom of it, like it was shining [a beam of light] 
  61.       
  62. down.  I sat here watching the lights and it never did move [the 
  63.       witne
  64. ss had the impression that all of the lights were part of 
  65.       the same obj
  66. ect].
  67.       
  68.            All of a sudden a "strobe light" flashed on top of the 
  69.       thing.  Five to ten seconds later a single light appeared to the 
  70.       
  71. left.  Off to the left, where the little hill is in there, up 
  72.       about ha
  73. lf as high as Ika Island.  The light "just appeared".  I 
  74.       didn't see it 
  75. go over there, it just appeared there.

  77.            It started getting b
  78. righter and dimmer; it got real bright 
  79.       and turned perfectly round, jus
  80. t like a fish egg or a balloon, 
  81.       and had a glow, a little halo all the way around it.  Then t
  82. he 
  83.       light got dimmer and started toward the ground and became more 
  84.       
  85. disk shaped as it went down [note:  the object could have 
  86.       changed its 
  87. orientation to the witness to "edge on" or the 
  88.       change in shape could h
  89. ave been the result of atmospheric 
  90.       conditions].

  99.            It went down to the ground.  I watched for another 5-10 
  100.       
  101. minutes, when two lights appeared, over the land, at about the 
  102.       same he
  103. ight in the sky, three-quarters the height of Ika 
  104.       Island.  Both lights 
  105. turned perfectly round like an orange ball, 
  106.       with halos, then they star
  107. ted down to the ground becoming disk 
  108.       shaped about half way down to the 
  109. ground.  One went clear to the 
  110.       ground, the other I could see the light of in the treetops of a 
  111.  
  112.       bushy area.
  113.       
  114.            So they both disappeared from view.  Mea
  115. nwhile that big 
  116.       thing always stayed there on the right with the three 
  117. orange 
  118.       lights and one red light on it.  Another ten minutes or so went 
  119.  
  120.       by, while these lights on the one remaining object continued 
  121.       ge
  122. tting brighter and dimmer.  A strobe light flashed again, and 
  123.       within 2
  124. 0-30 seconds started getting very bright--like the sun.  
  125.       I could see th
  126. e right end of the object illuminated by the 
  127.       light, and it looked just 
  128. like that [sketch, which shows half of 
  129.       a small oval on top of half of 
  130. a larger oval].  The light glowed 
  131.       for maybe 30-40 seconds, and went ou
  132. t.  As the light got dimmer, 
  133.       there was a dull after-glow in the area, 
  134. like the after-glow you 
  135.       get from a TV screen after you turn off the set.

  137.            I sat f
  138. or another half hour watching it.  By this time it 
  139.       was getting to be a
  140. bout 1:50 a.m. and the dull-glowing light was 
  141.       still there but it wasn'
  142. t doing anything so I decided to go to 
  143.       bed.  I set the alarm to go off 
  144. at 3:00 a.m. to check on it.  I 
  145.       woke up at 2:45 a.m. before the alarm 
  146. went off and looked, and 
  147.       it was gone.
  148.       
  149.            I had the feeling that when the strobe light went off and 
  150.       five seconds later whe
  151. n the other two lights appeared that 
  152.       something came out of that big th
  153. ing and went over there.  Maybe 
  154.       when the strobe light flashed one more 
  155. time they came off the 
  156.       ground and went back in it or something.  I saw 
  157. 3 objects total, 
  158.       and the one on the right was much bigger than the two 
  159. on the 
  160.       left.  They appeared to be round balls as big as hot-air 
  161.       balloons, looking through t
  162. he binoculars.  The distance across 
  163.       [from Whidbey Island] to there is 
  164. one and a half to two miles to 
  165.       that flat area over the river there.  I 
  166. knew there shouldn't be 
  167.       any houses there.

  170. hing I thought was that maybe there was a fire up 
  171.       on the foothills.  W
  172. hen I got up the next morning the first 
  173.       thing I did was use the spotting scope to look all over that 
  174.       hillside and there hadn't been anythi
  175. ng burning over there.
  176.       
  177.            So I called MacIndoe because I'd rea
  178. d the newspaper article 
  179.       about his sighting and that's what he said he 
  180. saw--a round 
  181.       orange ball, so what I saw must have been the same deal.

  191.            I've got an airplane up in Anacortes.  I'm a private 
  192.       p
  193. ilot.  Three to four days later I flew my plane from Anacortes 
  194.       on a be
  195. aring from my home right over the spot.  There are a few 
  196.       little cabins 
  197. there by the river and a couple of farms back in 
  198.       there behind La Conne
  199. r.  Other than that there is nothing in 
  200.       there.
