  8. Picked  this one up yesterday on
  9. a whim, without a pre-buy listen
  10. and  it  turns  out to be pretty
  11. damn good.

  13. The  gimmick  of  course  is the
  14. Anti-Criminal  Justice Bill bit.
  15. Quite  clever really.  The cover
  16. is  sealed  with the sticky info
  17. label  with  a warning that some
  18. of the tracks contain repetitive
  19. beats; and breaking the seal and
  20. playing   them   may  result  in
  21. prosecution   under   the  Bill.
  22. However   one   of   the  tracks
  23. _Flutter_   has   NON-repetitive
  24. beats  so  you can play this one
  25. as  loud  as  you like, wherever
  26. you  like.   But  with a (mock?)
  27. disclaimer  stating that you may
  28. need a musicologist and a lawyer
  29. on  hand  to  prove  this to the
  30. police   (conjouring   up   some
  31. amusing scenes).

  33. As for the music...  _Lost_, the
  34. first  track doesn't do much for
  35. me    at    all   bog   standard
  36. _Incunabula_  stuff, chords with
  37. a  bit  of percussion.  The real
  38. stormer  is  _Djarum_.   This is
  39. the  one  that  Autechre  played
  40. live  at  the  Megadog here, the
  41. one  that filled the dance floor
  42. and   sent   everyone  skipping/
  43. bouncing  about like hyperactive
  44. 8 year olds who've just necked a
  45. tartrazine/speed/acid mixture.

  47. It's  got  a  really deep almost
  48. echoey  sound.   I like to think
  49. of  it  being 'embossed' if that
  50. makes   any  sense.   A  totally
  51. addictive  slow  pianoey  melody
  52. creeps  in over this bassy sound
  53. and  loads  of  top fast scrapey
  54. percussion,  which weaves in and
  55. out...I  love  it.  _Flutter_ on
  56. the  face  of  it  sounds like a
  57. recipe  for  disaster, with it's
  58. non repetitive beats, this after
  59. all  is  not what dance music is
  60. about...   But it actually works
  61. really  well  and is also one of
  62. the  few records you can play at
  63. 33  and  45 sensibly.  It starts
  64. off  with  these  raw  stumbling
  65. (err,   not  one  to  beat  mix)
  66. beats,     then     has     this
  67. embarrassing    cheesy    melody
  68. (better at 33) then more percus-
  69. sion  and  finally  a deep bassy
  70. 'growl'  noise.  Once the melody
  71. is   'hidden'  under  everything
  72. else,  this  track  really takes
  73. off,   very   skippy.   It  also
  74. sounds VERY much like AFX stuff,
  75. at  both  speeds, with those mad
  76. beats           and          the
  77. arrangement...almost    uncanny.
  78. And  it  finishes  with the most
  79. ridiculously   long  fade  ever,
  80. must be several minutes.
