ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Hello, Team OS/2 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2 Newsletter Number 9
October 1994
Howdy Teamers,
Engage. That what I expect we'll be hearing a lot of over the next few months.
And not only will be hearing it, but we will in fact, be doing it. Engaging
with co-workers, friends, relatives and customers in discussing and showing off
Warp.
This issue we'll be putting the majority of our effort into telling you what
plans are in the works for the launch of IBM's latest revision of OS/2. Not
only about all of your plans, but also some of IBM's official plans to launch
the product.
I'm anxious over the next few issues to see all the reports from the various
demos! It's going to be an exciting few months. And watch for *more* exciting
news coming soon!
Comdex Fall is fast approaching. The call for volunteers is included, as well
as your invitation to attend the Team OS/2 Recognition Event on Wednesday,
November 16. David Barnes will be the MC, the Blu/2 band will be playing and a
silent auction to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will be held. Don't
miss this event if you plan to attend Comdex. Reservations are *required* as
there is limited capacity in the room we've booked, so get your name in early.
I hope you enjoy this issue and as always I look forward to your comments. See
you in cyberspace!

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. A message from Team OS/2 HQ ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Notes from IBM PSP Team OS/2 Support
by Janet Gobeille - Austin Texas (USA)
Worldwide Team OS/2 Support Program Manager
janetg@vnet.ibm.com
I've had some interesting talks lately with Team OS/2 members and IBMers
supporting Team OS/2 efforts both online and in Berlin and France. This
newsletter is a good way to share the results.
We discussed primarily how Team OS/2 is separate from the IBM Support of Team
OS/2.
As all of you know, Team OS/2 is open to any OS/2 enthusiast worldwide, and we
at IBM keep the members database and newsletter going as a service to Team OS/2
members everywhere. This is independent of how any individual IBM company or
country supports Team OS/2. This is a worldwide service.
We very much enjoy when new Team members write and tell us what they are doing
to promote the use of OS/2, help others learn about it, and support other OS/2
users. We hear of new user groups being started, bulletin boards carrying more
and more OS/2 software and conferences, people helping others in online OS/2
conferences, and people all over the world telling their friends, relatives,
and coworkers about OS/2 and helping them get started. By the way, some of this
information is being written up in an internal IBM publication to help inform
IBMers about Team OS/2. We'll reproduce that article in the next Team OS/2
newsletter for you to read as well.
But what does IBM do? Well, IBM has been getting more and more involved in
supporting Team OS/2 members where they are doing things that directly support
OS/2 marketing activities. For example, we send 'demo packs' to anyone doing
public demos. IBMers in other countries have contests and other promotions
available to Team OS/2. And in still others, IBM is providing even more
assistance to Teamers if they pay a fee to 'join'. As I mention: IBM in every
country chooses independently how they wish to support Team OS/2 best.
We feel that Team OS/2 offers teamers a unique opportunity to get to meet their
local IBM reps and work more closely with them to the advantage of both. It
offers IBMers a chance to work more closely one-on-one with our customers.
Often these happen in a way that can be fun for both. However, obviously, Team
members can choose if they want to participate (or not) with any IBM-supported
activity.
Now, for additional discussion on these, please continue them on Compuserve, on
Fidonet, or on the other Team OS/2 "electronic hangouts". We'll enjoy seeing
your comments on these.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. What is Team OS/2? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
What is Team OS/2?
Team OS/2 is like an electronic user group: it consists of people around the
world who are OS/2 enthusiasts and are voluntarily and actively sharing their
knowledge and enthusiasm with others. They work to promote the use and
availability of OS/2 wherever they can.
But unlike a user group, there is very little organizational structure. As
groups of Teamers come together though, they often start to form formal or
informal groups so they can provide their own support network to work more
effectively with IBM, vendors, user groups, and others.
Being part of Team OS/2 is a state of mind. Team members are those who see
that something needs to be done, and they figure out a way to do it. Some have
started OS/2 BBS's to provide support for local OS/2 users. Others see that
help is needed for local retailers to help them feel more confident in offering
OS/2 to their customers.
Membership in Team OS/2 is self-determined. You are a part of Team OS/2 (if
you wish) if you consider that you are actively doing something to help support
OS2 and OS/2 users and your efforts are beyond the expectations of your job.
Team OS/2 is not owned or run by IBM. In fact, most Team OS/2 members are not
IBM employees. Those Teamers who do happen to work for IBM generally use their
own time to help others and promote the use of OS/2 and OS/2 applications just
as other Teamers do.
Although we at Team OS/2 Support in IBM PSP do maintain a Team OS/2 member list
and put out this newsletter, we do these as services to Teamers worldwide.
Being on the list is NOT a requirement to be part of Team OS/2. But it does
help Teamers find other local members when looking for help, and provide a way
to recognize the efforts of so many people in helping to promote OS/2. See
Appendix B for information on how to get on the Team OS/2 member list.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.1. IBM Team OS/2 Support (Grass-Roots Marketing) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
IBM Team OS/2 Support (Grass-Roots Marketing)
The IBM Personal Software Products (PSP) Grass-Roots Marketing team supports
Team OS/2 and BBS activities (see Appendix A to learn how to contact this
group).
The support that IBM PSP offers to Team OS/2 changes as we learn to work
together better. However, we are currently supporting Team OS/2 in these ways:
1. Information Distribution and Coordination
o We distribute a world-wide Team OS/2 member list via Compuserve, Internet,
Fidonet, and other electronic mediums. This allows Teamers to find others
in their area and contact them electronically. See Appendix B for
information on how to get on this list.
o We can also provide a mailing list based on this member list to vendors of
OS/2 products on request. See Appendix A to see who to contact for this
list.
o The Team OS/2 Newsletter is produced monthly and distributed
electronically. This provides information to Teamers around the world to
help keep all Teamers up to date on what is happening with Team OS/2 and
with other Teamers. It also lets IBM know what Team OS/2 is up to.
Appendix A shows who to contact to submit articles or suggestions for the
newsletter, or how to get the ASCII source to include in another
newsletter.
o We participate on electronic forums to discuss Team OS/2, Teamer
activities, and future needs.
These forums also help foster creativity and imagination between Teamers,
and encourage new activities. See Appendix C for details on where to find
Team OS/2 on the various networks.
o We also maintain a listing of BBS's that participate in the Fidonet Team
OS/2 echo. See Appendix ? on where to find this listing.
2. OS/2 Merchandise and other Support for Marketing Activities
A number of Team OS/2 members have gone out on their own time to do public
OS/2 demos and to support and encourage local retailers. See Appendix D for
the specific types of activities supported, support packages, and
requirements. Where possible, these activities are supported world-wide.
3. Team OS/2 Member Support
Because of requests by many Team OS/2 members, we had a Team OS/2 logo
designed and have arranged for Team OS/2 Tshirts, Team OS/2 golf shirts,
and embroidered Team OS/2 logo patches. See Appendix G for ordering
information. In addition, we send some of these out in support of public
OS/2 demos so that the Teamer can be easily identified.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Team OS/2 Members - Where are they? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2 Members: Where are they?
The full Team OS/2 member list is available any place you can find this Team
OS/2 newsletter. Because of the size however, it's kept in a separate file.
Each month, the ZIP file will include the Team OS/2 member names in two
separate formats: one by country and city and the other alphabetically by
name.
These were created as of 01 October 1994:
Teamers by Network
The following list was created from the email addresses given to us. It's a
little misleading in that many people have Internet connectivity from a network
(such as America Online), but we do not have a specific Internet Address listed
in our database. So, the number of Internet-connected users is much higher
than appears here:

Team OS/2 Reports - Activities and Event
We encourage Teamers to list their activities with us (IBM Team OS/2 Support)
in order for them to be included in this newsletter. Contact us well in
advance in order to get your event added to our database, even if you do not
require additional support from IBM.
By listing your event in our database and letting people know what you are
doing, you can help give others ideas where they can also help in their
communities. And it's a good way to find additional volunteers if you need
them.
Note: We've started requesting some additional descriptive information about
each event so that we can include it in the newsletter. If you have further
suggestions about this, please send it to teamnews@vnet.ibm.com.

Scheduled Team OS/2 Activities and Events
This is the list of events currently scheduled in our Team Event database.
There are often other Team OS/2 activities planned, but these are the ones we
know of.
If you'd like to help out on any of these, please contact the lead Teamer given
in the list.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.2. The Warp Rollout in Minnesota ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The WARP Rollout in Minnesota
COMING TO THE: MALL OF AMERICA in the Twin Cities
THE WARP Rollout!
Are you a Midwest Teamer? (Do you want to be?)
Do you want to be involved in promoting OS/2 to the public?
Do you want to be involved with one of the best public demonstration
of the new WARP OS/2?
Do you want to do this at the largest Shopping Mall in America?
Do you want to meet other Teamers from the Upper-Midwest?
Are you availble on Saturday October 15th?
If you can give positive responses to the above, let me know. The Twin Cities
IBM office has asked me to gather interested Teamers (and anyone else) from
Iowa, North/South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Nebraska who would like to
do a MAJOR WARP blowout event at the Mall of America on October 15th.
Details are still in planning (i.e. I was told to do some brainstorming with
fellow Teamers for ideas. Nothing small, think large! ).
Some of the possibilities is a Test-Drive area (IBM local office will provide
equipment), Application demos (OS/2 developers let me know if you want to be
involved), Live demonstration area, and Q & A people.
For those who haven't been to the Mall of America, it is a ZOO on weekends.
People come from everywhere (literally!) to shop there. There is also an indoor
Camp Snoopy amusement park, 12 movie theaters, many, many eating places
including: Planet Hollywood, Gatlen Brothers Music City, Great American Sport
Bar (the largest I've ever seen), and my personal favorite: Hooters! (I'm a
man, what do you expect!).
The objective is to WOW THE HELL OUT OF THEM!
Send me an email if you are interested in helping, and we will arrange the
logistics.
[ The Twin Cities has been dead in regards to Team OS/2 activities, but we are
taking a major active roll with the upcoming release of WARP. ]

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.6. Helping out at Comdex Fall ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
"Comdex! Comdex!! Comdex!!!"
That sound you hear is the voices of hundreds of Team OS2 members as they get
pumped for the biggest event of the year - Fall Comdex, a.k.a. Victory In
Vegas! They'll be coming from all over the planet: the wheat fields of Canada,
the fjords of Denmark, the neon-lit streets of New York and Tokyo, and yes even
a few of us from the hills and hollers of North Carolina. Team OS/2 won't be
coming for money, or opportunity, or any of the 'normal' motivators. They'll be
coming for OS/2. And this is your invitation to JOIN US. I've been given the
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help lead the Teamer Tribes to glory on the
cold concrete floors at Vegas, and am eagerly looking forward to meeting many
of you who have become close 'virtual friends'.
Team OS/2 will be in the house in full force from Nov 13 (Sunday) til Nov 18
(Friday), spreading the word. This time we've got the right product (Personal
OS/2) at the right place, at the right time, so this will definitely be "the
big one"! We need volunteers to staff the Team OS/2 "Installation and Support
Team". As a volunteer, you'll need to be on-site in Vegas by Sunday the 13th.
We'll get you squared away with a Comdex exhibitors badge, which gets you onto
the show floor. We'll also provide the gear to support the Team's activities.
And hey, you get to leave Vegas with one of those way-cool PINK Team OS/2
shirts!! ;-)
On Sunday and Monday, you'll work shoulder to shoulder with other Teamers,
making sure that every booth that wants to show OS/2 is up and running. During
the show you'll be the roving band who keep an eye out for OS/2 problems, help
out where we can, and most importantly of all, REMAIN VISIBLE and SHOW THE
FLAG. We're hoping for volunteers who can commit at least one full 8-hour day
to the cause, more if possible. When you fill out the info below, also put in
any qualification etc; we're especially interested in follks with experience
installing/configuring OS/2 on different hardware platforms, and for multimedia
hot shots. Also let us know if you're a Certified OS/2 Engineer. These
qualifications are not a pre-req for participating and helping the Team, but
they can't hurt! ;-) If you're not quite at the 'guru' level, don't let that
stop you from volunteering; we can pair you up with a more experienced Teamer
to work in tandem. Heck, I'm volunteering and all I have going for me is
fanatical enthusiasm and my inimitable 'attitude'!! ;-)
IBM will be providing outstanding admin and logistical support for this killer
gig, but remember: this is the Team's endeavor, and WE are the ones who will
drive this thing and make it a Comdex to remember!!
If you want to sign up, use the checklist below. Since I'm in startup mode on
my new consulting gig and my on-line time is divvied up between my Customers'
needs and my Teamer stuff, the gang in Austin kindly agreed to be the
electronic focal point for collecting sign-up info. Team OS/2 needs YOU! HEY,
HO, LET'S GO!

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.1. Teamer Activities at PC94 in Melbourne, Australia ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Teamer Activities at PC94 in Melbourne, Australia
by: Doug Marker
This week PC94 is running in Melbourne. The show is already the most succesful
& vibrant PC show ever run in Australia. Numbers all week have exceeded most,
if not all, PC shows run in capitol cities in recent years.
Began Mon & Ends today (Fri 12th here).
The interest in IBM's stand has been terrific - we are next door to MS stand
(unfortunately the interest in their stand has also been the same :-(
Dave Barnes and also Gary Allran (Gary being on assignment from Boca) have
being doing a terrific job in attracting crowds to the OS/2 demos. It just
goes to show that the Barnes magic works just as well upside down as US way
up!). I had wondered if his 'Alleluja' revival style would sit with Aussie
audiences - well it does! He drew the biggest crowds of any IBM presenters
each time he performed. Gary was demoing OS/2 Multi-Media. He did the juggling
3 balls act (illustrating that OS/2 can multi-task & multi-thread). I asked
him if juggling was a pre-req to him getting his assignment in Australia, but
he assured me it was just a sideline that he indulged in (and quite well).
OS/2 for windows has been selling well from the stand. Again a surprisingly
high level of awareness of its' goodness.
I have been on the PPC part of the stand hyping up the PPC machines we plan to
announce in October. Interest here has also been fantastic. It seems to blow
people's socks off when they see the PPC ThinkPad with its built in video
camera and CD-ROM drive. Each time we kicked off the demo it drew an instant
crowd. Very few people asked specifically about NT on PPC - just nodded when
told it was one of the offerings.
The awareness of PowerPC is also very high. There seems to be a big wave of
anticipation for the PPC roll-out. Got lots of questions on when OS/2 would be
avail on PowerPC & very little negative reaction to the issue of NT being avail
on day of announce (we had NT & AIX on show) even if OS/2 might not be there at
the start. It makes me wonder just how much this issue is a US one vs outside
US, & also the extent that MS might be using every trick in the book to make it
an issue in the US. MS are not nearly as aggressive here as what I see in US
BBS's.
We took out a couple of awards at the show. I will clarify what they were with
some of the other Teamers as I am sure someone said to me that Daytona got some
sort of award even though Not There !!!. What I saw on our stand was Best
Software of the Show & Best Multimedia Software. MS had 'Best Networking
Product' ribbon on their stand so I need to confirm just who got what.
Cheers from Down under at PC94.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.2. Cape Town, South Africa ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cape Town, South Africa
by: Francois van der Merwe
Well, al last Team OS/2 did there first show in South Africa. Unfortunately I
could not attend because of family matters, but one of the other teamers did
take over from me and he and the rest of the team did an excellent job.
Here is the report:
Hi there Teamers,
Congratulations on an excellent, excellent performance at the BEXA show. You
came out above expectations! I was impressed, and the ISG (read IBM) people
were especially impressed!! I really enjoyed myself, and hope that you enjoyed
yourselves. Overall, I would say that was great fun. For your interest (and
for those who couldn't make it), we managed to install OS/2 on nine machines,
plus two machines in the ISG stand that didn't have OS/2 on them! So that was
way above the five that we felt would be a good shot. To tell you the way
above the five that we felt would be a good shot. To tell you the truth, I was
surprised at the good reception we got! BTW, there were two machines running
OS/2 at the show when we started!
OS/2 really stunned the crowds, and Ramon sold all the copies of OS/2 that he
had! OS/2 is providing good business for Midware Technologies, that it is for
sure! Glenn's demoes went exceptionally well after he brought in his
microphone, and we had crowds blocking the isles on Saturday. The ISG stand
was full for most of the time, and I had the time if my life, talking OS/2 and
showing off its capabilities to anyone that was interested.
Thanks to all of you that participated, and I hope those of you that couldn't
make it (yes, you Francois!!) join in next time. The public knows about OS/2
now, the software vendors are the next crowd that we must dazzle with the pro's
of running OS/2!!
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.3. One BBSCON ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
One BBSCON
One BBSCON was a great success for OS/2 *and* IBM. The seeds we started at
this show last year and have continued to seed throughout the BBS community
with free SysOp offers, having taken hold.
Our booth was crowded at all times, except right when the lunch door first
opened. We had many more people this year asking technical questions, as
opposed to those asking 'what is it'. There were those, but no where near as
many. We had many supporters at the show who stayed and answered questions of
others who couldn't get close enough to us IBM'ers. Thanks to all of you who
helped!
Doug Azzarito, Gene Steele, Dave Whittle and myself manned th booth. An added
benefit this year was having Dave & David Hughes showing off their OS/2 turnkey
solution, which we hear they are selling like hotcakes. They are using OS/2,
TCP/IP, Lora BB software and some unnamed Swedish utilities. My thanks to them
both for joining us as it worked out *very* well.
We had setup a phone line to dial into Indelible Blue for purchase of the OS/2
for Windows (on 3.5" only) special going on right now and they did a good bit
of business. We also were handing out post-it notes with the 800 number for
the Warp Beta II. Thanks to Gene for keeping the supply stocked. Many folks
tried to get through, but the number was busy constantly. Some folks even came
back the next day and tried again. I sure wish we'd had the note with the
alternate phone number in time to pass tha one out as well.
Reports have indicated the exhibit area got something over 3500 attendees. This
is *way* up from last year and should continue to grow at next year's show,
which will be in Tampa, FL. Speaking of next year's show for just a moment; I
had a long chat with Jack Ricard (who runs the show) about having more OS/
education sessions next year and he couldn't be more pleased that we want to do
so. Doug will be putting together the informatio about these in early March
(I've got a reminder in Relish to remind him about this!) to get to the show
folks. We plan on about 5 sessions. Having the show folks want to have a
track of OS/ sessions clearly shows we have made an impact on this arena.
One of the things I enjoyed the most, besides all the traffic <g> was the
comments I heard from the other vendors. Some said the didn't want to 'be next
to IBM again' as our booth was 'too busy' yet others 'would love to be next to
us to get some of our runoff' Still others were simply amazed that IBM was
there at all! Many remembered us from last year and commented that if we were
so busy, maybe there was something in this OS/2 product after all. Makes me
feel wonderful to hear ALL these comments!
As usual, I'm sad, but glad it's over. My feet and back are just now starting
to quit aching and I can talk again (I was near horse for 3 days I talked so
much). During our OS/2 session this year, Doug Azzarito showed off the current
Warp beta and we were swamped at the booth afterwards. "What' that number"
everyone would ask? "It really runs in 4 meg?", w were asked. Yes! "How many
lines can I run at once?", was heard time and time again. Music to the ears!
Anyway, I've rambled enough. It was a good show and I'm, as usual looking
forward to it again next year. Lots of new ideas have been jotted down and
with having a track on OS/2, it looks like the BBS community thinks we have a
good thing going. Look for pictures of some of the fans of OS/2 and Team OS/2

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.1. America Online wants your Newsletters ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Greetings Fellow Teamers from America Online,
The OS/2 Forum on America Online (AOL) has been steadily growing and is about
to put on a new "face". Part of our expanded forum will be the popular
newsletter section. The TEAM OS2 News is currently one of several OS/2 and
OS/2-related newsletters posted to this forum area on a regular basis.
We wish to invite all OS/2 and OS/2-related user groups and clubs to consider
presenting their group's newsletters here on AOL! In this way we can better
serve the OS/2 community by allowing AOL members to have more of an opportunity
to learn about your group. Not only nearby AOL members, but members in the
surrounding areas can become aware of the various user groups and be able to
consider joining. In addition, distant OS/2 groups will hear of each others'
activities and be able to communicate with each other, possibly sharing
knowledge and resources. We believe this will foster inter-group communication
which will, in turn, serve to benefit the OS/2 community as a whole!
If you are interested, please review the following guidelines regarding
submission of newsletters. These guidelines were created to help us comply with
AOL policies for the OS/2 Forum, to facilitate the acceptance of your
newsletter, and answer many of the anticipated questions you might have.
(Please note that the OS/2 Forum on AOL is a service of AOL but is not AOL,
Inc. itself. In other words, we're not the management and we don't set or
control AOL policy. In fact, this forum is staffed with volunteers as are most
other forums on AOL. This also means that AOL, Inc. isn't responsible for
anything we're saying here. "Us" and "We" refer to the OS/2 Forum as a whole
and not to AOL, Inc.)
1) How to Submit Your Newsletters-
You don't have to be a member of AOL! While uploading a newsletter to AOL is
free, membership is not. We'd be very happy to have you join us and you're
most welcome to do so, but it isn't necessary to do so just to upload your
newsletters. However, if a member of your group is already an AOL member, that
will make things easier.
If you are posting to an internet site or have the ability to do so, let us
know where, and the date new issues are available, and we'll have someone get
it from there.
If you wish, you may send us a disk with your newsletter on it. (Contact
pcadave@aol.com on that one.)
We don't have ftp yet but you can UUEncode your newsletter and EMail it to
pcadave@aol.com. (Maximum on that is about 500K, UUEncoded.)
If necessary we can set up a special, password-protected uploading account for
a specific person in your group at no cost. (This is not easy to do and will be
judged on a case by case basis.)
Finally, we're ready to hear any ideas you may have about how to get the
newsletters to the OS/2 Forum. Contact pcadave@aol.com or pcaud@aol.com. We
most definitely want your newsletter and are willing to work with you to make
that happen!
2) Format-
We're flexible, but strongly recommend ASCII or INF formats. Special
requirements of other formats (such as EPS, etc.) will prevent the greatest
possible readership of your newsletter.
3) Content-
Anything about OS/2 or OS/2 related. That doesn't mean that everything in your
newsletter has to be about OS/2. This is more of a general direction than an
editorial statement. We're allowed to publish newsletters of OS/2 and OS/2
related user groups, not ALL user groups.
For example, if you are primarily a DOS or Unix group then AOL will not let us
publish your newsletter, although they will be accepted by other areas. If you
are a Non-OS/2 user group and you have had a special OS/2 event, we'd love to
publish a newsletter including an article about that event.
AOL prohibits us from publishing most advertising material or solicitations.
Inviting new members into your group and informing your membership of upcoming
events in your group and/or community are NOT considered advertising.
All newsletters will be considered for release on an "as is" basis. We cannot
and will not edit your newsletter in any way whatsoever. If we should ever run
into any difficulty or problem we will communicate with you about it. The OS/2
Forum will need to either release the whole newsletter or none of it.
4) Keeping Current-
The OS/2 Forum will have a "Current Issues" section for your most recent
newsletter. Older issues will be in a different area for people to refer back
to them. All issues that are more than two or three months old (unless you
publish less often) will be in not be in the "Current Issues" area.
5) Having Your Own Area-
When any newsletter exceeds more than 20 issues online (an AOL guideline), a
special sub-section of our Newsletter Section will be set up for that
newsletter. This will be just for a single newsletter, provided it is being
kept current and up to date. (AOL require's us to have a committment to keep
the area "fresh" with current issues as they become available in order to do
this.)
If your group would like to have its own area for its newsletters now, you may
submit the current issue and 19 back issues.
6) Who to Contact-
Well that's about it. Thank you for taking the time to read this. The OS/2
Forum hopes you will consider our invitation. If you have any questions,
concerns or just need assistance in getting started, please contact the
following:

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.1. Teamer Success Story ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A Teamer Success Story
<Note: This message was originally posted to America Online and is being
reprinted with permission.>
While walking through a local computer reseller, I have always noticed that no
one is ever checking out the computer systems (not many that is) and the stores
computer sales are anything but impressive, so I went to the checkout counter
and asked for the manager of the store.
After a couple minutes of waiting I was greeted by the manager and introduced
myself. After I had been asking about his rate of computer sales, I said
this...!! How would you like to sell twice or even three times that many
computers!!! He thought for a minute and said, "ok, what to do you have in
mind?" I offered to setup OS/2 on 3 different computers.
He thought this over for a minute and then said, "I've wanted to try that
myself, but I hear it has problems and is difficult to use." I comforted him
and said let me get it installed and that I will show you.
He agreed and went to one of the shelves and picked out a copy of OS/2 for
Windows, then brought it back to me and led me to the computers. He said take
your pick and so I picked out a modest 486/66 and began to install it after
wiping most of the harddrive (except for WIN+DOS and a few other things). At
first he said that it looked rather complicated to install I said well, yes,
but it could be accomplished by most without a problem. (I could tell he was
already impressed by the looks of the installation meters, and the neat OS/2
graphics in the background.) I then rebooted and it was off and loading after
getting to the Workplace shell. I let him sit down and take a go at it and was
he ever impressed! He said he had no idea that OS/2 would be like this and
that the Workplace shell was a lot nicer that windows.
Well after taking him through some of the thing OS/2 could do, he came away
happy and said "will you install this on the others now?" I said sure thing and
was off to install them.
While I was installing on the other machines I noticed a few of the people that
came into the store stopped next to that computer and watched in awe, and in
fact some of them already started asking questions about it. I went over there
to help while the installation process was completing on the other machines.
After answering the typical (Will my Windows apps still work under OS/2?, What
about my current hardware?, and some others), two of the crowd walked out with
copies of OS/2 in their bags, eager to try it out themselves.
Well anyhow, after 2 weeks I went back last night to see how things were going
and he said " great!", and that since the installation of OS/2, he had sold an
estimated 15 computers (which according to him was well above the norm). And
thanked me again for my services.
Oh by the way he offers OS/2 with the 486 66 for no charge!!
P.S. I am not one of the best story tellers as you can see.
Can't wait to show him the 2.99 WARP 2 BETA!!!
<Editors Note: Brian, what a fantastic story! Thank you for sharing it with
us and Thank You for helping out this dealer. Brian can be reached
electronically at: BrianR4889@aol.com.>
<Editors Note 2: Unfortunately none of us can find Brian's last name to put in
the story. Brian, PLEASE contact us, so we can send you a shirt!>
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.2. Demo Tips ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This month we have demo tips from Chris White and Jeff Bakalchuck.
Keep those tips coming!
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.2.1. Chris White's Demo Tip's ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
OS/2 Demo Tip's
by Chris White
Sometimes, no matter how much planning and practice you put in, your demo just
doesn't go as planned. It pays to have a backup plan to fall on in case the
unthinable happens.
1. Plan ahead. Look over the place where you'll be doing the demo a day (or a
few hours) ahead. Make sure your equiment can reach an electrical outlet. If
you're using an overhead display, have someone sit in the back row to help you
test the focus and the lighting of the room.
2. Be prepared. Make sure you have a task killer program, like KILL.EXE,
installed on the demo machine. If you have an application that hangs, you can
kill it quickly and demonstrate the Crash Protection feature. (With practice,
you can make that look planned!)
3. Be up front. If you have to reboot the machine in front of your audience (it
happens to everyone at least once), don't hide from the audience. Do the
three-finger salute, then explain how OS/2 does a shutdown when you reboot and
point out how all the applications open when it comes back up. You can make
this very impressive!
4. Leave a backdoor. If an application or session won't start, don't panic.
Make a joke about the app being shy in front of a crowd and move on. Make sure
you have another way to make the point. For example, if the phone line suddenly
won't work during your connectivity demo, ask how many people find that their
comm sessions are terminated under Windows and explain why that doesn't happen
with OS/2.
5. The trap. Getting a Trap error during a demo is about the worst thing that
can happen. Use the opportunity to explain that this is a crash and how rarely
it occurs under OS/2. Explain the difference between a Trap 2 (memory) and a
Trap D (hardware conflict), then show how gracefully OS/2 recovers from the
crash.
*A tip here ... on the OS/2 LAN Tour I discovered that the cables connecting
the board to the power supply sometimes jiggled loose during transport. The
result was an infrequent Trap 2 error. Now, I *always* test all the connections
on our nine computers during setup. Take a few minutes to make sure your
hardware is in top condition before your demo.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.2.2. Jeff Bakalchuck's Demo Tip's ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Twelve steps to a great Team OS/2 Demo Event
by: Jeff Bakalchuck
The following is based upon my experience in doing Team OS/2 Demo Days at local
computer stores. Keeping in mind that the goal of these events is to promote
OS/2, if you follow these easy steps you'll have a successful event.
1) Smile and have FUN. If your having fun and smiling, people will be more
interested in what your saying and showing.
2) Promote, Promote, Promote. Let everyone know where and when your event is.
The more people who know about it, the more people you will have. Post an ad
for the event on local BBS's, Compuserve, AOL, Genie etc. For the Internet,
send an ad to David Tholen (tholen@newton.ifa.hawaii.edu). David is the
moderator of the comp.os.os2.announce newsgroup. He will post your Ad. Since
David does this on a volunteer basis, you should try to give him two weeks
notice. When posting to BBS's please put your message in the proper conference
and respect the rules of the system your on. Tell the local OS/2 User Groups
about the event. Lastly, signs for the store window are a great idea. I use
the black OS/2 posters and write the event info on them. Its quick and
effective.
3) Ask before you try something for the first time. Since Team OS/2 has done
so many of these events, chances are that anything you, or I, come up with will
have been tried before. Use the experience of others to help your event.
There may be a very good reason why something isn't done at these events, ask
and find out. Who should you ask? The folks at Team OS/2 HQ in Austin (Janet,
Anita etc.) are a very good place to start. You can ask other Teamers who do
these types of events also.
4) Give yourself plenty of lead time. I can safely say from experience, that
no matter how far in advance, you plan these event you never have enough time.
Team OS/2 events are like beta code, the more time you give them the less buggy
they are.
5) Be positive, Don't bash. Your there to promote OS/2 and educate people
about OS/2. OS/2 can stand on its own (of course you know that or you wouldn't
be in Team OS/2 ) you should talk about OS/2 positively rather then negatively
about Windows etc. If you get negative it will turn people off. This doesn't
mean you can't mention some of the weaknesses of Windows, just don't let that
be your main focus. Remember, most likely the store sells far more Windows
stuff then OS/2 stuff( that's why we do these events after all), If someone
stops by and asks you where Calendar Creator for Windows is, don't say "You
don't wanna use that junk, you need OS/2 ". The person is customer in the
store, if you can't answer their question, direct them to someone who can. The
last thing you want to do is annoy the store's customers, this will NOT win you
favor with the store management. Last point on this subject, every now and
then you will get the died-in-the-wool Windows fan who's sole purpose is to
provoke fight with you over Windows vs. OS/2. Don't engage these people. Once
it becomes clear that they just want to argue tell them "I understand your
point" and turn to someone else who's more open minded.
6) Be accountable. If you tell the store you'll do something, then do it.
Don't promise things you can't deliver and if there is a problem let them know
right away, not at the last minute.
7) Be respectful of the store and its rules. YOU ARE A GUEST, BEHAVE LIKE ONE.
If the store has a rule, follow it. Ask before you do things like put up
banners or move things. Don't worry about being a pest by constantly asking
for permission. And lastly, clean up before you leave, try and leave the area
the same way or neater then when you got there. A follow-up thank you letter or
phone call to the store manager the next week is also a good move.
8) Listen to people and ask them questions. Don't just do a demo like a robot,
ask people what they want to see, what they use their computers for, what they
would like to use their computers for. Your goal is to educate them and show
them OS/2. Don't twist people's arms.
9) Coordinate with Team OS/2 HQ. The folks down in Austin are a huge help with
these events. If you work with them, they'll work with you.
10) Contact the local IBM Branch office people who handle Sales and Marketing
for OS/2. Your helping them do their job, they are by and large very helpful
to Team OS/2. If you need something for your event ask them, they have a stake
in your event, they might just get you what you need. If you don't know who
these people are, you can try calling 1-800-IBM-3333 ask for the consultant
relations coordinator for your area. The Consultant Relations people should be
able to direct you to the OS/2 folks in the Branch office. You can also
contact the nearest OS/2 users group, they generally work with the local IBM
branch office. Team OS/2 HQ can also help with this one.
11) Have a Dave Barnes video running all the time. If you have ever since Dave
you know why you want one of his videos running. If you haven't seen him then
you don't know what your missing.
12) Lastly, always remember the event goal. To promote OS/2 and to educate
people about OS/2.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.3. Chairman Welcomes Internet Users to the IBM Home Page ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Chairman Welcomes Internet Users to IBM Home Page
IBM Chairman Lou Gerstner welcomes Internet users to IBM's new
"home page" on the Internet. The home page, first posted on May 23,
serves as the hub of all IBM information on the Internet.
Gerstner promises Internet users that the home page will offer an easy
way to learn about IBM and to feed information back to the company.
The full text of his message appears at the end of this notice.
Although there has been no announcement of the IBM home page until
now, it is already serving information to users every 18 seconds.
IBM's activities on the Internet are coordinated by the Networked
Application Services Division.
The IBM home page is located on a World-Wide Web server, a system that
helps organize Internet information by linking documents together via
a technology called hypertext. Hypertext lets selected words "expand"
to provide more information about the subject. The new information can
take the form of text, video, audio or graphics. For example, clicking
on the hypertext word AS/400 can take you to information about the
latest models of the product.
Here is the text from Lou's statement:
"Hello, I'm Lou Gerstner, chairman of IBM. On behalf of all of us at
IBM I'd like to welcome you to our World-Wide Web server.
Through our server, we'll try to make it easy for you to learn about
our technology and some of the things we're doing at IBM -- and also
make it easier for you to share your ideas with us. We'll update our
information on a regular basis and do our best to keep it interesting
and informative.
We're committed to the Internet, and we're excited about providing
information to the Internet community. I hope you'll check back here
often."

The IBM Team OS/2 Support group keeps a database of members as a service to
Team OS/2 members world-wide. We then sort and upload them to the electronic
networks so that you can find each other.
For this database, please send the following information to one of the
addresses given in Appendix A:
1. Your Name
2. Mailing address (only the city, state, and country will be published)
May we release your address to vendors who wish to do mailings to Team OS/2
members? (Yes or no)
3. Userids and networks
4. Optional: you can include a short (1-2 line) description to be included
with your name. Sometimes software developers like to mention which
products they've written or BBS operators include how to reach their BBS.
5. For our private records (these will NOT be published), please also include
your phone number (home/work), Fax, etc.
Also please let us know what you've been doing to help promote the use of OS/2.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.3. Appendix C: Where can I find Team OS/2 Members? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Where can I find Team OS/2 Members?
The majority of people associated with Team OS/2 can be found somewhere online,
participating on a Bulletin Board. Since the fastest and easiest method of
communicating with a large group such as Team OS/2 is via electronic networks,
this is the perfect avenue to coordinate events, to report on what you or your
group are doing, or to help others who have questions or problems. We also
electronically brainstorm about new ideas.
We also provide a list of Team OS/2 members and email addresses worldwide. It
can normally be found wherever this newsletter is found. The next section in
this Appendix shows how to address these users via the Internet no matter which
electronic system they may be on.
Below are the major networks where Teamers can be found. The lead Teamer on
each network is usually a volunteer assisting in monitoring conferences and
uploading files from IBM PSP. Note: these folks are *not* IBM OS/2 technical
support.
The following list is maintained by Vicci Conway (IBM PSP Bulletin Board
Coordinator). Please contact her with corrections and changes.
America Online: Go to the "Computing" icon, "OS/2" topic. The lead Teamer
here is Ed D'Avignon and can be found with the userid

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.4.4.1. A Word from Rob ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A word from Rob
Greetings Canadian TEAM OS/2!
Well, the last couple of months have certainly been fun and educational for me.
COMDEX was a hit. Over 60 of you showed up to help out and I must say, all
people ever mention to me is: "your teamers were visible (hot pink shirts will
do this) and extremely helpful". It's comments like this that make me very
proud to be associated with TEAM OS/2 in Canada. I sincerely thank all of you
that participated not only at COMDEX but at any events you have ever helped in.
We also launched our TEAM OS/2 ThinkPad Contest. By the way, I have extended
the deadline for entries until Oct 31 1994. Many of you had asked for an
extension to get in more entries for the ThinkPad. I need to know something
from all of you. I ran the idea of a contest by 15 teamers and all of them
loved the idea, especially when a ThinkPad was being given away (by the
way..there are other prizes as well..I'll talk more about those). A few of you
don't like the idea and I have learned that you can't please everyone. I need
ideas from you on how to thank teamers who do an extraordinary job at an event
of at several events. Tell me how I can do this and I will do my best to
implement something. I am truly trying to be responsive to your wishes but I do
need to hear from you. Send me a note with suggestions and if you have
questions about the contest, send them to: OS2CONTEST@VNET.IBM.COM.
I mentioned prizes:
1) One ThinkPad 360 Model with Colour Screen
Comes with all the toys: 14.4 PCMCIA Modem
Carrying Case
12 MB RAM, 340MB HD, ACPA Sound Card etc.....
2) 3 OS/2 Jackets
3) 5 OS/2 Sweat Shirts
4) 10 TEAM OS/2 Writing Folders (your name to be engraved on them)
5) Participation gift for everyone involved
What else is happening: NEW TEAM OS/2 Shirts coming!!!! I have just received a
sample TEAM OS/2 shirt, better quality than before and nicer logo (I had it
redesigned slightly). You will start getting these in your Store kits for the
contest.
I would also like to start a new section to my newsletter component called
AWARDS. I have met teamers all across Canada and some of you really go above
and beyond the typical role of a teamer. After COMDEX I presented Terry
Hamilton with a Gold Ambassador Pin for his exemplary work at COMDEX 94'. I
also presented Matthew Stein, Bjorn Gudehus and James Fitzgibbons with Silver
Ambassador Pins. Please look for the AWARDS section to be included at the
bottom of my Canadian component of the newsletter. See below for this months
awards.
That's it for this month. Please send me your comments to
TEAMOS2_CND@VNET.IBM.COM and let me know how I'm doing as TEAM OS/2 Coordinator
and I look forward to your suggestions.
AWARDS
Arylnn Poczynek - Gold Ambassador Pin and TEAM OS/2 Writing Folder Arylnn has
been involved with TEAM OS/2 in Alberta. He has been a focal point for
organizing many events and has taken the long bus ride to many different US
COMDEXs including COMDEX Canada 94'. By the way, Arylnn has also been hired
recently by IBM Canada to work as a Retail Store Representative in Toronto. His
term with IBM will be a contract term for an undefined period. All the best and
keep up the great work Arylnn!

IBM Team OS/2 Italy Coordinator: Guiseppe Rossano (IBM).
Looking at the great activities made by you all around the world, some people
from the Italian OS/2 BBS, as well as from the Italian DAP BBS Front End and me
asked ourselves: "why do we not create our own Team OS/2?". So, we did. We
discuss the Team itself, the experiences made by the other Teams everywhere and
the activities we are planning to organize in the future. Don't worry, all the
discussions are in Italian ..... ! !
Team OS/2 Italy has its own Team OS/2 newsletter (in Italian). Fabio
Vinciguerra puts that out for Team OS/2 Italy and it will soon also be
available world-wide through the Fernwood OS/2 file collection so that others
can enjoy it.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.4.9. Team OS/2 Korea ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2 Korea
The IBM TeamOS2 Liaison for Korea is James McKenzie at:
Internet: fkj6-jcis-com@seoul-emh1.korea.army.mil
Per a note from a Team member in Korea:
We are bringing in most of the OS/2 FidoNet echos. A movement is afoot to
bring in the main OS/2 FidoNet echo. We hope to have it here in country within
the month.
There are several supporters of OS/2 here in Korea. A special mention is going
out for Mr. Hugh Preston, a computer systems operator/administrator at Osan AB.
Though his efforts, we have most of the newer OS/2 files imported to a system
here in the Republic of Korea. This allows most of the users of OS/2 to keep
current with shareware and testware OS/2 programs.
OS/2's popularity is growing over here. There are 20 FidoNet BBSs and about
1/2 are using OS/2 as their primary operating system. There is also a Fidonet
echo: ROK_OS2. The purpose of this echo is to support OS2. The echo is
available to any Fidonet node and Fidonet point that exists within the Republic
of Korea. It is available Free of Charge.
There are several FidoNet BBSs that carry the FidoNet OS/2 echos and the Korean
OS/2 echo. These BBSs are:
o The Expatriate's Retreat 82-2-749-7557, located in Seoul,
o The Morning Calm, 82-333-691-3060, Songtan (OSAN AB),
o The Blue Note, 82-333-665-8969, Songtan,

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.5. Appendix E: Team OS/2 Activities support by IBM ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2 Activities support by IBM
This section contains information on specific activities and events where IBM
PSP is actively supporting Team OS/2. However, if you are looking for support
that doesn't fall within one of the following categories, please contact us to
discuss.
At this time, major activities that are supported include:
1. Support for public OS/2 demos (including those at stores or universities)
2. Support for local OS/2 resellers
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.5.1. Support for Public OS/2 Demos ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If you're planning to do a demo for a group of people or for a public event,
please contact IBM Team OS/2 Support. Examples of supported demos include
public demos at universities, PC fairs, hamfests, shopping center malls, or
OS/2 days at local retailers.
We would like to know:
o Where the demo will be done (name of school, store, etc.)
o Date and location of scheduled event (city, state, country)
o Number of Teamers involved in doing or supporting the demo
o Number of people expected to attend and see your demo
o If this is a public demo at a software retail store, also send the number of
store clerks expected to be working during your demo.
o Your name, shipping address, and telephone number
We would like to help with a 'Team OS/2 demo pack' with some things to support
your demo and to give away during it. Since the contents will vary according
to the event, we'll discuss what this will consist of after receiving your
request.
(Note: this 'demo pack' is not intended for user group meetings.)
Then after your event, we would like a report on it including, but not limited
to:
o Names and addresses of all the Teamers involved in the activity
o Pictures, Pictures, Pictures. Please take pictures of the Teamers in this
activitiy, and send them to us with your report. We would like to include
your pictures in future newsletters.
o Number of people who saw your demo or tried OS/2 during that time.
o How did it go? Tell us what went well, what didn't, what advice you'd have
for others doing this? Also, what suggestions do you have for our Team OS/2
support in the future.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.5.2. Team OS/2 Support for local retailers selling OS/2 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If you have a local retail store that is selling OS/2, we encourage you to
'Adopt a Store'. Meet the employees, answer their questions on OS/2, encourage
them to stock it, visit them on a regular basis if you can.
If you adopt a store that is carrying OS/2 but doesn't have any OS/2 marketing
'support' (such as demo disks, z-cards, etc.), please contact us with the
following information:
o Name and address of store
o Name of the store manager
o Does the store have a demo OS/2 system (or will they?)
We'll send you a 'Team OS/2 Store Pack' for you to give to them. This
contains:
OS/2 'Z-cards' (flyer with OS/2 information)
OS/2 demo disks
OS/2 post-its and pens for store employees
A 'monitor topper' if they are running OS/2
Catalogs from sources of OS/2 merchandise
Note: at this time we are only prepared to offer this support within the US.
However, if there are Teamers outside the US who are seriously interested in
requesting one of these packs, please EMAIL or FAX your inquiry to us as given
in Appendix A and we'll see what we can arrange.

Team OS/2 Merchandise
Lees Keystone will be stocking special items for Team OS/2. You can contact LK
for orders and pricing information at the following:
Phone: (800) 717-7666 (USA only)
Phone: (914) 273-6755.
Fax: (914) 273-9187.
They are now carrying white Team OS/2 tshirts (with a large 6-color logo on the
front). They also have golf shirts with the colored Team OS/2 logo embroidered
on the front where a pocket would have been. The golf shirts are available in
green, red, and blue.
They also carry embroidered Team OS/2 patches (2 1/2" x 2 3/8"). It would be
great on hats, jackets, etc.
You'll be seeing these shirts (both the golf shirts and the tshirts) as more
OS/2 demos and other public events are planned. From now on, IBM Team OS/2
support will be sending these out for the "uniforms" for the teamers who are
working these events instead of the shirts with the OS/2 logo. The OS/2 shirts
will still be used for other purposes, but Team OS/2 shirts will only be sent
for the volunteers.
At this time, we're not planning to send out the embroidered patches, however
they look very good. They were designed and stocked based on many requests by
Teamers.
