ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Installing BackMaster ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This installation program performs the following actions:
1. Copies files to hard disk
2. Updates the CONFIG.SYS file
3. Creates BackMaster object on the Desktop.
4. Installs floppy tape or parallel port tape drivers.
The above actions are selected by corresponding check boxes in the main
installation window. All options are selected by default. In addition, the
directory in which the BackMaster* program files will be installed is indicated
by the entry field in the main installation window. Any options may be changed
as desired. However, for BackMaster* to function properly, the CONFIG.SYS file
must be updated.
Note: After the installation program has finished, the system will need to be
rebooted so that the changes to CONFIG.SYS may take effect, and the device
drivers can be installed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.1. Installing files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Files on the installation disk will be placed into the selected directory if
the "Install files" button is checked.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.2. Updating system configuration ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
References to the tape device drivers and BackMaster* will be inserted in
CONFIG.SYS if the "Update system configuration" button is checked. Drivers are
specified in the CONFIG.SYS file by a DEVICE statement. Any existing DEVICE
statements that refer to a BackMaster* tape driver will be removed (the same
device driver cannot be loaded more than once). The new DEVICE statements will
be clearly commented. All drivers that come with BackMaster* will be listed in
the CONFIG.SYS, any driver not selected to be installed will have a REM
statement preceding the DEVICE statement. If the driver is later needed, the
REM statement can be easily deleted.
The following is an example of driver lines added to the CONFIG.SYS:
REM *********** BackMaster tape drivers start here *********
DEVICE=D:\BACKMAST\FTDVR.SYS
REM DEVICE=D:\BACKMAST\PTDVR.SYS
REM *********** BackMaster tape drivers stop here *********
In the above example, the floppy tape driver (FTDVR) was selected to be
installed, the parallel port tape driver (PTDVR) was not. Note the REM
statement preceding the DEVICE statement for PTDVR.SYS.
In addition to adding DEVICE statements for BackMaster* drivers, the PATH,
LIBPATH, and HELPPATH are updated to include the directory in which the
BackMaster* program files are located.
A copy of the original CONFIG.SYS is saved to the directory in which
BackMaster* program files are installed as CONFIG.001. If the installation
program is used more than once, subsequent copies of CONFIG.SYS are saved as
CONFIG.002, CONFIG.003, etc. Also, a copy of the current CONFIG.SYS (the one
used during system boot) is kept in the BackMaster* program directory.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.3. Creating desktop object ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A folder for BackMaster* will be created on the desktop if the "Create desktop
object" button is checked. This folder will contain the BackMaster* program, BM
Recover, BMREST, and the File Selection Set folder (for your customized backup
sets). More information on each of these objects may be found in the
BackMaster* manual or online help.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.4. Installing tape drivers ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Installation options allow for a floppy tape driver and a parallel port tape
driver. All drivers are copied to hard disk when BackMaster* is installed, but
all drivers are not necessarily loaded in the CONFIG.SYS file. If a driver is
not needed, it should not be loaded in CONFIG.SYS. The default options will
cause CONFIG.SYS to load FTDVR.SYS; check the options appropriate for this
system. Only one of FTDVR.SYS and TC15DVR.SYS may be installed, but PTDVR.SYS
may be installed in addition to any other driver. Remember that at least one
driver must be installed for BackMaster* to work.
Drivers included with BackMaster*:
FTDVR.SYS - Driver used for tape drives connected to the floppy controller, or
connected to a high-speed adapter. Includes the 2.88MB floppy
controller, FC10 and FC20 high-speed adapters.
PTDVR.SYS - Driver used for some tape drives connected to the parallel port.
Includes tape drives such as IOMEGA PPT2, and the Microsolutions
Backpack 250.
TC15DVR.SYS - Driver for use with the TC-15 high-speed adapter.
Note: The "Update system configuration" box must be checked in order for the
drivers to be installed in CONFIG.SYS.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.5. Install in directory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
All BackMaster* files will be copied into the directory specifed in the main
installation window.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.6. Install from ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A path to the installation diskette (if installing from diskette) or complete
path to the appropriate subdirectory where the source files for the
installation reside, is required.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. A custom installation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If for some reason it is undesirable to use this installation program to
install BackMaster*, all necessary steps may be done by hand. First, the
BackMaster* program files must be uncompressed into a directory on the hard
drive. BM.EX_ is a self-extracting archive located on the BackMaster*
installation diskette containing all the BackMaster* files. To extract the
files, execute BM.EX_ with the first parameter specifying the directory to
which the files will be extracted. For example, if BackMaster* is to be
installed in the directory C:\BACKMAST, type: BM.EX_ C:\BACKMAST.
Next, place DEVICE statements in the CONFIG.SYS for the BackMaster* tape device
drivers. that you wish to install. For example: suppose that BackMaster* was
installed in directory C:\BACKMAST. In this case, add the following lines to
the CONFIG.SYS file in the root directory of your boot drive:
DEVICE=C:\BACKMAST\FTDVR.SYS
DEVICE=C:\BACKMAST\PTDVR.SYS
See the section on updating the CONFIG.SYS file for more information.
It is also suggested that the PATH and LIBPATH be updated to include the
directories in which BACKMAST.EXE and QICCOMPR.DLL are located, respectively.
If this is not done, it will be necessary to execute BackMaster* from the same
directory in which QICCOMPR.DLL is located.
At this point it will be necessary to reboot the system in order for the
changes to CONFIG.SYS to take effect.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Errors during installation. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If errors are encountered during the copying of files, they may be caused by
one of the following:
1.
Invalid path to the installation files.
Action: Check to be sure the path specified for the installation diskette
is correct. Also be sure that this diskette is securely in the drive.
2.
Invalid destination path specified.
Action: Check to be sure the destination path is valid. Make sure that
directory names are not more than eight characters on a FAT file system,
and that only valid characters are in the directory name.
3.
Invalid drive specified for destination.
Action: Check to be sure that a valid drive is specified. If a network
drive is specified, make sure it is accessable. Also check for valid
directory names for the appropriate file system on the chosen drive.
If problems persist, see the section on a custom installation.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Device driver ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The device drivers that are included with BackMaster* allow communication with
the tape drive. To be installed, a device driver must be referenced by a
DEVICE statement in the CONFIG.SYS file.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Keys help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
No special keys are defined in this install program.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

boots, that sets environment variables, specifies device drivers, etc.
