Screen Blanker 4.5 and Folder Password Lock 1.0
===============================================
If you have already installed the Folder Password
Lock from the version 4.41 package you do not have
to reinstall Password Folder Lock.
Starting with version 4.41 the Screen Blanker package
introduces yet another useful functional extension to
the Workplace Shell with the Folder Password Lock.
The password protection of Screen Blanker can now be
extended to any folder on the Workplace Shell including
the Drives folder, the System folder, the Templates
folder etc.
If you have any comments or suggestions on how to
improve the Folder Password Lock don't hesitate
to contact me at p.wansch@ieee.org.
(Please see the last section "Planned improvements")
Why should I user the Folder Password Lock?
===========================================
There can be several reasons to lock a folder. Maybe
you would like to lock a folder if it contains some
confidential letters or you would like to lock the
System folder if you don't want people to change
system settings or you might want to lock a folder
that contains a program with wich you can edit
confidential data of a client.
How secure and reliable is the Folder Password Lock?
====================================================
There is no 100% secure system. However you can get
very close to it with the Folder Password Lock. To
make a system almost 100% secure you would have to:
1) Lock the Desktop folder itself. Now a reboot would
not help, since you got to enter the password to
display the desktop.
2) Lock the System folder and delete any shadow copyies
of drives and command prompts from your desktop and
launch pad so that a user has no access to the command
line.
3) Modife ALTF1.CMD so that a user cannot bring up the
command line or the Maintenance Desktop by pressing
Alt+F1.
4) Prevent booting from diskette by changing the bootup
sequence.
5) Do not load the launch pad automatically. Remove
LAUNCHPAD from your SET AUTOSTART statement in your
CONFIG.SYS file.
Password Folder Lock is simple but effective and it
does not reduce your system performance at all and
needs virtually no space on your harddisk.
How do I install the Folder Password Lock?
==========================================
The Folder Password Lock requires Screen Blanker 4.41
or higher. So please install Screen Blanker first.
The archive PWFLCK10.ZIP contains the files PWFOLDER.DLL,
INST.EXE and UNINST.EXE. To install the Folder Password
Lock change to the directory where these installation
files are and enter INST at the command prompt.
If the installation was successful, shut down and reboot
the system immediately.
How do I lock a folder?
=======================
The object menu of each folder contains now an additional
Lock item. Choose this item to lock the folder. You have
to enter a password to unlock the folder. This password
is the password you enter in the Screen Blanker Settings
dialog window.
How do I uninstall the Folder Password Lock?
============================================
Use the UNINST Utility to uninstall Folder Password Lock.
After you have uninstalled do the following: immediately
boot OS/2 from diskette or if you use Warp press Alt+F1
and choose command line. The delete the file PWFOLDER.DLL
form your OS2\DLL directory and reboot the system.
Planned improvements
====================
It is planned to be able to lock both the OS/2 and DOS
command processors and to lock other functions that are
a possible security risk like the Search function. However
Screen Blanker will continue to provide the user interface
for these functions with a special Lock menu.
