  9.  AB    Serum specimens from 304 patients and 116 blood donors were tested for
  10.        HIV-1 antibody using the Murex SUDS HIV-1 and the Genetic Systems LAV
  11.        EIA test systems. There were 320 specimens non-reactive with both SUDS
  12.        and LAV (116 blood donor specimens and 204 patient specimens). There
  13.        were 53 patient specimens which were reproducibly reactive by LAV and
  14.        confirmed as positive by both Western blot (WB) and immunofluorescence
  15.        (IFA). All 53 of these specimens were reactive by SUDS (100% sensitive).
  16.        Of 47 specimens reproducibly reactive by LAV but unconfirmed by WB and
  17.        IFA, the SUDS test was reactive in only 4 instances. The overall results
  18.        of this study demonstrate that SUDS was 100% sensitive (53/53) and 98.9%
  19.        specific (363/367) and indicate that the Murex SUDS HIV-1 antibody test
  20.        system may be acceptable for rapid screening in specific situations.
