  1.                 IMPORTANT: INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS!!

  3.      To enjoy the reports in the archive CHIN15WN.ZIP,
  4. unarchive the ZIP file to a directory of your choice. IF YOU 
  5. HAVE THE REGISTERED VERSION, COPY ALL FILES FROM THE 
  6. DISKS TO A DIRECTORY OF CHOICE! These documents are designed 
  7. to be viewed and printed with REPLICA, a state of the art 
  8. document viewing and printing system for Windows that is 
  9. included in this shareware archive. REPLICA eliminates the 
  10. need to own any Windows word processor and also preserves 
  11. the formatting, design and graphics which were part of the 
  12. original document. Understand that REPLICA is not a word 
  13. processor: text is locked and you cannot edit or change 
  14. anything although you can cut/copy and paste using the
  15. Windows clipboard and print as well.

  17.      FIRST, unarchive CHIN15WN.zip to a directory of choice.
  18. IF YOU HAVE THE REGISTERED VERSION, COPY ALL FILES TO A 
  19. DIRECTORY OF YOUR CHOICE. A sensible name for such a directory
  20. would be \china. Then start Windows if you have not already done 
  21. so. Open up the directory tree display and display the file list 
  22. window for \china (or whatever you named the file).                      
  23.      YOU MUST FIRST START REPLICA ITSELF WHICH IS EMBEDDED IN THE
  24. FILE CHREADME.EXE. YOU MUST BEGIN WITH CHREADME.EXE AS REPLICA
  25. IS NOT CONTAINED IN ANY OF THE OTHER FILES IN THIS ARCHIVE.
  26. If you attempt to view .rpl files in any other text viewer or word
  27. processor they either will not open or you will view a great deal 
  28. of code 'garbage' on screen. SIMPLY DOUBLE CLICK ON THE ICON FOR 
  29. CHREADME.EXE IN THE FILE LISTING OF THE \CHINA DIRECTORY DISPLAY. 
  30. THAT IS ALL THERE IS TO IT!  
  31.         REPLICA will start and display the file chreadme, which is 
  32. embedded in the file chreadme.exe. You may now view each of the 
  33. documents that comprise EARLY MYTH AND THE GODDESS IN ANCIENT CHINA V1.5 
  34. for Windows by opening each within REPLICA as you would any file from 
  35. the File Menu. REMEMBER THAT EACH DOCUMENT HAS THE EXTENSION .RPL, NOT 
  36. .DOC. You may, of course, set up a program item within a group of 
  37. your choice for chreadme.exe as you would for any executable. You can
  38. print any range of pages, or an entire .rpl document, as you would with 
  39. any Windows application by using Print Setup and Print in the usual 
  40. manner. There is on-line Help on the menu bar of REPLICA if you lose your 
  41. way. I strongly recommend that you take a few minutes and read the 
  42. on-line help so that you can orient yourself for viewing, selecting text 
  43. or graphics for cut and past clipboard operations and printing. The
  44. default viewing window in REPLICA is 100% which will provide terrific 
  45. legibility but may require that you scroll in order to reach page margins. 
  46. You might prefer the 75% view window but realize this choice will introduce
  47. a screen artifact on many monitors in the form of narrow horizontal white 
  48. lines (which do not interfere with the text). See installation instructions 
  49. in chreadme.rpl.

  51. EARLY MYTH AND THE GODDESS IN ANCIENT CHINA:Files
  52.  
  53.         There are six files in the shareware archive of EARLY MYTH AND 
  54. THE GODDESS IN ANCIENT CHINA: readme.1st (ASCII-this file); chreadme.exe, 
  55. chregist.rpl (order form), ch15sh.rpl (shareware preview of the book)
  56. and chglsh.rpl (19 page glossary). YOU MUST START WITH CHREADME.EXE AS 
  57. EXPLAINED ABOVE IN ORDER TO INSTALL THE REPLICA VIEWING SYSTEM. 
  58. The readme is an eleven page information package that will give you some 
  59. general background about the book and introduce Reality Software and its 
  60. products. In the registered version of EARLY MYTH AND THE GODDESS IN 
  61. ANCIENT CHINA V1.5 for Windows which is not archived, the file chin15.rpl 
  62. is the complete 60 page illustrated book and the file chgls15.rpl is the 
  63. illustrated glossary.

  65. ABOUT REPLICA:
  66.  
  67.     REPLICA does not preserve the original margins of most documents 
  68. in that the right and left margins on the REPLICA viewing screen are 
  69. usually wider than those of the original document when it is viewed with 
  70. the word processor or spreadsheet program that created it. If you find 
  71. the font size displayed by REPLICA to be smaller than you wish, check to 
  72. see that your video mode is 640 x 480. Such a resolution will correct 
  73. most readability problems. Also consider the 75% view window.
  74.         REPLICA itself is very machine intensive. I doubt it will  run on
  75. a 286 and performance will be slow on a 386SX. REGISTERED USERS OF THIS 
  76. PRODUCT PLEASE NOTE: THE PROCESSING DEMANDS UPON REPLICA TO LOAD AND 
  77. DISPLAY THE COMPLETE 60 PAGE ILLUSTRATED BOOK ARE ENORMOUS. I DOUBT THAT 
  78. SCREEN REDRAWS FOR THIS PRODUCT WILL BE ACCEPTABLE ON A 386. IN 
  79. ORDER TO AVOID SERIOUS COLOR DISTORTION WHICH WILL MAKE READING VERY 
  80. DIFFICULT, FOLLOW THESE SUGGESTIONS IF YOU OWN A 386 OR 486.
  81. CLOSE OUT WALLPAPER, SCREEN SAVERS AND ALL OTHER PROGRAMS IN 
  82. ORDER TO MAXIMIZE AVAILABLE WINDOWS RESOURCES UNLESS YOU HAVE INSTALLED
  83. RAM FAR IN EXCESS OF 8Meg. IT IS BEST NOT RUN A THIRD PARTY SHELL SUCH 
  84. AS THE NORTON DESKTOP FOR WINDOWS OR PC TOOLS FOR WINDOWS. DO NOT LOAD 
  85. EARLY MYTH AND THE GODDESS IN ANCIENT CHINA A SECOND TIME WITHIN A SINGLE 
  86. WINDOWS SESSION. BEFORE VIEWING THE E-BOOK A SECOND TIME, RESTART WINDOWS 
  87. IN ORDER TO MAXIMIZE RESOURCES. If shareware users view what seems to be 
  88. an odd color palette that does not allow for easy reading, follow these 
  89. same procedures: close out all unnecessary programs and restart Windows. 
  90. Depending upon your work in Windows prior to using Replica, even small 
  91. .rpl files may load with severe color distortion. Always closely monitor 
  92. your available Windows resources when using resource intensive applications.
  93. When Windows Resources fall below 50% they often trigger a GPF.

  95.     Understand that this is the first commercial release of REPLICA 
  96. and the programming challenge was formidable!  If you don't believe it, 
  97. ask your friendly neighborhood Windows programmer. Reflect that no cross 
  98. application document viewing system was available for Windows until late 
  99. fall '93 even though the need was apparent years ago. Play with the 
  100. buttons on the tool bar, drop the View menu and notice the many choices 
  101. there. ABOVE ALL, READ THE ON-LINE HELP! Enjoy the presentation and 
  102. reflect that you now can explore state-of-the-art document viewing for 
  103. Windows. I welcome any and all comments, criticisms and suggestions: 
  104. see addresses on the registration form. Please note the large size of 
  105. this shareware archive: .exe and .rpl files do not undergo much 
  106. compression by PKZIP. Be certain you have adequate space on your drive 
  107. to hold these files and for ease of use they should all be put in the 
  108. same directory. The registered version of EARLY MYTH AND THE GODDESS IN 
  109. ANCIENT CHINA V1.5 for Windows is only available on high density disks.

  111.     The shareware version of REPLICA is embedded within chreadme.exe 
  112. and includes an extensive Help file. You may view an unlimited number 
  113. of REPLICA documents (.rpl) but you can only create 5 (five) REPLICA 
  114. document files of your own.  Registration of REPLICA is required if 
  115. you wish to create an unlimited number of .rpl files from your
  116. own documents. See About ... on the Help menu. Reality Software does not 
  117. sell REPLICA: you must contact Farallon Software directly. If you are 
  118. interested in document publishing for Windows I highly recommend REPLICA.
