OCR: IT Norton Desktop 1.0 for DOS by Tony Curro What Peter Norton has done for Windows, he has now done for DOS. Norton Desktop 1.0 for DOS (NDDOS) has many of the features found in the Windows version. It has drag-and-drop, mouse support and the same key commands that are found in the Windows release. Full installation of NDDOS requires 8MB of hard disk space. As with other products you can choose which modules are installed. There are various Norton Utilities including: Speed Disk, Norton Disk Doctor, Jnerase, System Information. In addition you have a calculator, calendar and built-in text editor. Other programs are: Norton Antivirus and Norton Backup for DOS. The default screen can be changed to emulate Norton's Commander. There is also a screen saver included, and you can even compress or uncompress files, or view a document, database or spreadsheet file from the more than 50 file viewers, without running the application. You can also associate a file with an application. If you set all files with the extension of WKS to run 1-2-3, whenever you execute the .WKS file it will run 1-2-3 and place that file on the screen. A configurable menu allows you to place your own programs there, and start them with a click of the mouse, or by pressing a key. I have a Bernoulli drive, and without a disk in the drive I get an error from NDDOS. Just clicking on OK allows it to continue. NDDOS supports all the file and disk features like: copy, move, delete, rename and so on. Overall I did like the Norton Desktop for DOS. If you are a new user, or one who does not have any utilities, I would suggest this package. In the other hand, if you are like many people, who have a myriad of programs you may wish to consider it. Many readers have backup programs, Norton Utilities, and AntiVirus software. Eliminating these from the above program would only leave you with a shell, file viewers, and the ability to compress files. At the street price of NDDOS I think that is a bit much to pay. There is NO upgrade policy for current owners of Norton Antivirus, Norton Backup, or Norton Utilities.
