  10.         As some of you may know, I am a big advocate of backups. A few
  11. weeks ago I was testing this product for review. About 10 days after I ran
  12. my last test, and last backup, I had a hard drive crash. The only way to
  13. get into it was by reformatting. This meant losing ALL the data on the hard
  14. drive, of which the original of this review was one. I knew I had a backup.
  15. Actually, I had several. A few were for other tests and were outdated. The
  16. one for MegaBack was the most current, and since I do a FULL backup
  17. every time I test, I did have a good portion of the information. I lost 5
  18. reviews I had written, and several programs I had recently downloaded. It
  19. was not as bad as it seemed at first.

  21.         MegaBack was a BIG plus for me this day, as any backup program
  22. would have been. One thing that makes MegaBack different is that it's
  23. shareware. You can download it from most BBSs, and even directly from the
  24. author's BBS (Patri-Soft). Some backup programs can be cumbersome when you
  25. do not have the catalog file. MegaBack created the information directly
  26. from the disks I had the backup on. The rest of the restore was easy and
  27. painless.

  29.         Mostly all the features you will find in a commercial backup
  30. program, you will find in MegaBack. It supports floppies or any DOS device,
  31. but does not support a tape drive. It will do a Full, Incremental, or allow
  32. you to select files to backup. When you choose incremental, if you wish,
  33. you can see a list of the files that need to be backed up. From this list
  34. you can deselect files you do not wish to backup.

  36.         MegaBack can be run from the command line if you prefer. It has
  37. online help for all the commands and options. Installation is very simple
  38. and there is help there to guide you every step of the way.

  40.         Backing up multiple drives is also available from MegaBack. You may
  41. also change the color combinations of the screens if you so desire. You
  42. have the option to select which files to restore, if you do not want them
  43. all placed on your system.

  45.         When I backed up, I selected the options: Save Space(Max), and
  46. Verify. Both of these options will slow the program down a bit. I was still
  47. doing over a megabyte a minute while backing up. As I mentioned earlier
  48. MegaBack will build an index from the volume data in the event your index
  49. was destroyed.

  51.         Registered users receive additional utilities, one of which is
  52. MBAlarm to remind you when it is time to backup. These programs are also
  53. available on Patri-Soft BBS.

  55.         For its price and ease of use, I would suggest MegaBack. Since you
  56. can download it, you do not even have to go the store to buy it, and since
  57. it is shareware you can try it and then buy it. Look for MBACK135.ZIP,
  58. which was the latest as of this writing.
