  2. @Introduction
  3. ~Welcome to Cheet Sheets, Issue 43 - August/September 1995

  5. Cheet Sheets must be installed to your hard disk before it
  6. can be used. The install program will be run when you exit
  7. this program (by selecting CLOSE) if you have started via
  8. GO.BAT. Alternatively type INSTALL at the DOS prompt.
  9.

  11. the main magazine.

  13. ~System Requirements
  14.  
  15.      ■ 286+ with VGA and (about) 520k free Ram
  16.      ■ 2.5Mb of free hard disk space
  17.      ■ A mouse and SoundBlaster are optional but recommended
  18.  
  19. ~We've fully redesigned the interface recently, following
  20. ~feedback.  The Windows interface has been withdrawn.
  21.  
  22. ~Mouse Control
  23.  
  24. Use the left mouse button to select any button, close
  25. windows using the close boxes and control the program using
  26. the icon bar.
  27.  
  28. To move through the pages of an article simply click on the
  29. up and down arrows at the right of the screen, or use the
  30. arrow keys/page up/page down!

  32. ~Keyboard Control
  33.  
  34. Cursor: Move the mouse cursor using the arrow keys and press
  35. the spacebar where you would usually use the mouse button.
  36.  
  37. Push buttons: If an underlined letter is shown, type that
  38. letter. Otherwise, move the cursor over the button and press
  39. the spacebar.
  40.  
  41. Closing Windows: If a close box is displayed on the active
  42. window, press escape to close the window.

  75. ~Music & Command Line Options
  76.  
  77. INSTALL /m or CHEET /m - Uses the Software cursor - needed
  78. on some amstrads and other machines where no mouse cursor is
  79. visible.
  80.  
  81. CHEET /silent - Silence. Kills the sound entirely. If you
  82. haven't got a sound card and get fed up of the screech, or
  83. find the program hangs, use this option.
  84.  
  85. CHEET /SP - Force Speaker to be used for sound output. Don't
  86. know why you'ld want to do this!
  87.  
  88. CHEET /SB - Force Soundblaster output. Use this switch if
  89. your SoundBlaster (or especially a compatible card) is not
  90. detected.
  91.  
  92. If your system locks after you select too high a sampling
  93. rate, simply restart - Cheet Sheets will notice that it
  94. has crashed, and reset the sampling rate to the lowest
  95. setting.
  96.  
  97. ~GREAT NEW FEATURE! If you've not got a sound card, using
  98. ~the "Play" (Noise Suppressor) in the viewer *vastly*
  99. ~improves music quality!

  102. ~Submitting your work
  103.  
  104. If you are thinking of submitting an article or a cheat,
  105. you'll save us a lot of time if you follow these guides...
  106.  
  107. ~Text files
  108. ■ All files must be saved in ASCII format (there are options
  109. on all common Word Processors to do so).
  110.  
  111. ■ Each article must be a maximum of 70 characters wide and
  112. no more than 1600 lines. If you require more than 1600
  113. lines, split your text into separate files.
  114.  
  115. ■ An articles first line must be the name of the
  116. program/article. Please include your name in the article.
  117.  
  118. ■ To highlight a line, put a ~ at the start.
  119.  
  120. ■ If you include tables or IBM graphics characters on a
  121. line, start the line with a backwards quote ` found on the
  122. key beneath escape. This makes the line monospaced. You can
  123. highlighted a monospace line by putting ~` at the start.
  124.  
  125. ■ If you send screen shots, please size them to 320x200
  126. with 256 colours and save in PCX format. Use something
  127. like Graphics Workshop or Paint Shop Pro to do this.
  128.  
  129. ■ If you're including screen shots, save us some time! Make
  130. sure the second line of your review is a number, indicating
  131. the no of screen shots, then subsequent lines should hold
  132. the file names (PCX only). Just like this:

  145. ~Q: When I went to print a solution/review etc.. I receive
  146. ~an error dialogue box telling me that my printer is
  147. ~offline, or nothing is printed.
  148.  
  149. A: The current release of NGS GUI only supports LPT1. If you
  150. printer is connected to a different port, you will not be
  151. able to print.
  152.  
  153. ~Q: I'm bored with the music, but haven't finished reading
  154. ~the mag yet... how can I change it?
  155.  
  156. A: Firstly, remember that there are 3+ tunes with each
  157. issue... have you tried them all?  If you have, simply copy
  158. your favourite MOD files into the Cheet directory.
  159. Depending on the free DOS memory on your machine,
  160. modules greater than 200k may not play. Cheet Sheets will
  161. not play the old style 16 voice MOD format!

  163. ~Q: Where can I get Cheet Sheets by FTP?
  164.  
  165. A: Dunno. If you find it somewhere, please tell us!  For now,
  166. you can have UUENCODED copies of the magazine sent to your
  167. email address for free - send a request to cs2ei@herts.ac.uk
  168. for this service.  We cannot guarantee how long this will be
  169. available.

  172. ~Known examples of the Negatively Expanded Feature Set
  173.  
  174. ~Scrolling
  175.  
  176. We've fixed the Scrolling problem found with earlier copies
  177. where you had to select "Safe Scroll". Cheet Sheets now
  178. autodetects incompatible VGA cards and uses a "Page at a
  179. time" scroll instead on such machines.  What this does
  180. mean is that the cursor keys work the same as PageUp/PageDown
  181. on such computers.

  183. ~Scrolling without mouse
  184.  
  185. If you've no mouse, the up and down arrows move your cursor
  186. and do not scroll the screen. To scroll either use the PageUp
  187. and PageDown keys, or alternatively use CTRL with these keys
  188. to scroll one line at a time.

  190. ~Install
  191.  
  192. If the INSTALL program fails, you may not have enough free
  193. DOS memory. You need at least 512k free to install and use
  194. Cheet Sheets 31+. Note that this is 512k free and not 512k
  195. total. The actual Cheet Sheets program will run with about
  196. 350k free if you can live without the music.
