A. Frequently Asked Questions
-----------------------------
Q: What are the *minimum* system requirements?
A: Not a lot. A 386, SB compatible sound card, 4MB RAM, VESA 1.2 compliant
SVGA card.
Q: What language is Affinity programmed in?
A: Though you can find the same information in the Foreword, let me tell you
again. Affinity is programmed in C++ using DJGPP v2.01 which is an
excellent compiler for DOS.
Q: Why didn't you use Borland C++?
A: Because the memory requirements of the magazine grew beyond the normal
640K barrier and I wasn't in the mood to tinker around with stupid XMS
or EMS methods of memory allocation.
Q: What is that other file called CWSDPMI.EXE for? Can I delete it?
A: That file is needed to run Affinity under DOS if you have no DPMI
host installed. You can delete it if you want, but I wouldn't recommend
it.
Q: How did you do that smooth scrolling? Can I have just a small portion of
the code?
A: You'll never know. And no.
Q: Where can I download Affinity back and future issues?
A: http://www.scenelink.org/aft, ftp://affinity.cns.net/Pub/Affinity.Magazine
or simply ask in #AFT on the EFNet IRC Network.
Q: Did you really program that game (Galactic Warfare) in Affinity?
A: Yes, I did. That's why it is so crappy. <g> Not bad for a few hours of
work, eh.
Q: Would there be a Windows version of Affinity?
A: As of now, there are no plans on porting this to Windows 95. Sorry, but
Affinity is cuter in DOS.
Q: Can you *please* program a naitve version of Affinity for Linux? Please?
A: Sounds interesting, and I *might* do that if I get diskspace to install
Linux in full.
Q: Can you make the game awesome with loads of weapons and enemies?
A: Sorry, but programming a game is a very time consuming job. The game
will be improved, but don't hold your breath.
Q: I have a Sound Blaster AWE, and I get no sound. Why?
A: I'm not sure. I don't have the card to see why it doesn't work. Send me
a card, and I *will* fix it. <g> For now, if it doesn't work, too bad!
Q: Is the source code *really* available for money? How much?
A: No, that was a joke. Though, I will entertain any serious requests! <g>
Q: I'm a single female with loads of money. Would you be interested in
marriage?
A: Loads of money? Enough said. Count me in. <eg>
Q: I'm a female, and I think the nude images in Affinity are in bad taste and
sexist. You men are all pigs.
A: Really? I'm so sorry. Please delete your version of Affinity for a full
refund.
Q: Do you believe in God?
A: What the heck? Umm, yes and no. Enough questions.
B. Known Limitations
--------------------
Sound does not work with most SB AWE32 cards and some cheap SB/SBPro
clones.
C. Technical Info
-----------------
AFT.EXE was compiled with DJGPP v2.01. To operate under DOS, it will need
the presence of the file: CWSDPMI.EXE. You may safely delete this file if
Affinity runs fine under Windows 95.
System used to build this file:
Windows 95 - Pentium 75, 16MB EDO
D. Beta Release
---------------
If this is a beta:
Please do not release this beta. If a little bird tells me that you have
leaked it to anyone regardless of whether it was your mommy or daddy, I
will not be very happy.
Bottom line: Release this and die!
