  14. This RFC specifies a standard for the ARPA Internet community.  Hosts on
  15. the ARPA Internet that choose to implement a Character Generator
  16. Protocol are expected to adopt and implement this standard.

  18. A useful debugging and measurement tool is a character generator
  19. service.  A character generator service simply sends data without regard
  20. to the input.

  22. TCP Based Character Generator Service
  23.  
  24.    One character generator service is defined as a connection based
  25.    application on TCP.  A server listens for TCP connections on TCP port
  26.    19.  Once a connection is established a stream of data is sent out
  27.    the connection (and any data received is thrown away).  This
  28.    continues until the calling user terminates the connection.

  30.    It is fairly likely that users of this service will abruptly decide
  31.    that they have had enough and abort the TCP connection, instead of
  32.    carefully closing it.  The service should be prepared for either the
  33.    carfull close or the rude abort.

  35.    The data flow over the connection is limited by the normal TCP flow
  36.    control mechanisms, so there is no concern about the service sending
  37.    data faster than the user can process it.

  39. UDP Based Character Generator Service
  40.  
  41.    Another character generator service is defined as a datagram based
  42.    application on UDP.  A server listens for UDP datagrams on UDP port
  43.    19.  When a datagram is received, an answering datagram is sent
  44.    containing a random number (between 0 and 512) of characters (the
  45.    data in the received datagram is ignored).

  47.    There is no history or state information associated with the UDP
  48.    version of this service, so there is no continuity of data from one
  49.    answering datagram to another.

  51.    The service only send one datagram in response to each received
  52.    datagram, so there is no concern about the service sending data
  53.    faster than the user can process it.

  67.    The data may be anything.  It is recommended that a recognizable
  68.    pattern be used in tha data.
  69.  
  70.       One popular pattern is 72 chraracter lines of the ASCII printing
  71.       characters.  There are 95 printing characters in the ASCII
  72.       character set.  Sort the characters into an ordered sequence and
  73.       number the characters from 0 through 94.  Think of the sequence as
  74.       a ring so that character number 0 follows character number 94.  On
  75.       the first line (line 0) put the characters numbered 0 through 71.
  76.       On the next line (line 1) put the characters numbered 1 through
  77.       72.  And so on.  On line N, put characters (0+N mod 95) through
  78.       (71+N mod 95).  End each line with carriage return and line feed.
