  4. To run C News at all,
  5. you need a fairly good emulation of Unix.
  6. There are several such for VMS.
  7. They have various minor imperfections.
  8. The only one we specifically \fIknow\fR of that is a problem for
  9. C News is the inability to make real links for cross-postings.

  12. .Ix relaynews
  13. \fIRelaynews\fR normally files an article under its first group and then
  14. makes hard links into further groups.
  15. If \fIrelaynews\fR finds itself unable to make a hard link,
  16. it will try making a symbolic link instead;
  17. if that fails, it will make a copy
  18. (actually it minimises the number of copies).

  20. .Ix expire
  21. \fIExpire\fR has a \fB\-l\fR option that tells it to consider the first
  22. name of an article as the ``leader'',
  23. not to be deleted until all others
  24. have been deleted.

  26. The one place where extra work would be necessary would be \fImkhistory\fR,
  27. .Ix mkhistory
  28. which has no notion that some links are different from others.

  30. So far as we know, we don't get into any of the other trouble areas of
  31. Unix emulation on VMS,
  32. at least with the Eunice emulator.

  34. We don't have a VMS handy for testing,
  35. so we make no guarantees.
