  24.  
  25.     The LPRng software is an enhanced, extended, and portable
  26.     implementation of the Berkeley LPR print spooler functionality.
  27.     While providing the same interface and meeting RFC1179
  28.     requirements, the implementation is completely new and provides
  29.     support for the following features: lightweight (no databases
  30.     needed) lpr, lpc, and lprm programs; dynamic redirection of print
  31.     queues; automatic job holding; highly verbose diagnostics;
  32.     multiple printers serving a single queue; client programs do not
  33.     need to run SUID root; greatly enhanced security checks; and a
  34.     greatly improved permission and authorization mechanism.

  36.     The package comes with filters for PostScript and HP printers, as
  37.     well as the usual 'dumb' printers. Note that the PostScript and
  38.     HP filters do page counting and produce accounting information.
  39.     In addition, there are a wide variety of other filters that can
  40.     do page formatting and produce banner pages.
  41.  
  42.     For users that require compatibility with the SVR4 lp and lpstat
  43.     interface, lpr and lpq will simulate this interface, eliminating
  44.     the need for another print spooler package. In addition, a
  45.     publically available PCNFSD server is distributed with LPRng, and
  46.     interfaces with the PC/DOS/Windows based NFS style print spoolers.

  48.     For users that require secure and/or authenticated printing support,
  49.     LPRng supports Kerberos V and/or PGP authentication methods. Additional 
  50.     authentication support is extremely simple to add.
