- Hi Folks,
-
- 1.99p5 is available in the BleedingEdge directory on ftp.ardi.com.
- I'm having trouble connecting to vorlon.mit.edu so I haven't been able
- to force a mirror. Hopefully that will be fixed up later today,
- Sunday.
-
- Executor/NEXTSTEP/Motorola still isn't ready, but Mat's been working
- on it every day since Cotton left. We're hoping to have it running in
- house in the next few days.
-
- As I've been testing 1.99p5, I've noticed that there are several
- places where a black and white icon should appear, but nothing is
- drawn in its place.
-
- 1.99p5 should correct a few glaring bugs that we introduced in 1.99p4
- and should also work better in general. I believe that the slow
- access to the DOS drive has been fixed and I also think people using
- OS/2 should be able to access their HPFS volumes, although subject to
- 8.3 filenames. Windows '95 users should be able to use full
- filenames. Network drives that can be accessed by a single drive
- letter should work as well.
-
- Unless we've really botched something, the next release should have a
- new System file and new Browser. The System file has some changes
- that will make Adobe Photoshop work better and the Browser should have
- many bugs fixed.
-
- In addition to finishing up the NEXTSTEP/Motorola port, we hope to
- clear out the following 30 Problem reports before going beta. Those
- PRs marked with an asterix *may* be fixed in 1.99p5 already. We have
- many more known PRs and depending on how much time we have as we do
- vigrous testing and finish up the packaging, we might fix some
- problems that aren't on this list and we'll try very hard to fix any
- regressions.

- If you haven't tried running random programs in a while, I think
- you'll find that programs are much more likely to work now than they
- were a month ago. I think we have an acceptable level of
- functionality. Executor/DOS+Linux will have a suggested retail price
- of $249, but if we get a deal with a major mail order outlet (we're
- talking to MacConnection/PC Connection), the street price will
- probably be closer to $175. Pacific Micro's Mac-in-DOS for Windows
- has a street price of $128, so for less than 50% more you get a tool
- that will allow many Mac programs to run as well as the ability to
- copy files and folders about.
-
- Special thanks go out to Tadashi Shimura, who helped us out when
- Cotton's motherboard broke (his replacement is faster!). Hearty
- thanks go to all of you who have paid your license fees. We're still
- pretty tight on money, but it looks like we'll be able to coast into
- getting 2.0 out the door.
-
- Because we haven't finished a deal with MacConnection/PC-Connection
- yet, we still can't make any other distribution deals. Although we
- got a lot of engineering done during Hackathon II, I didn't multitask
- particularly well, so some of the business side of things slipped a
- little bit.
