  22. Sure thye could use it.  But since it is all proprietary information its
  23. use would violate Apples copyright and result in all sales of Executor as
  24. illegal.

  26. The "licence" for the ROM info travels with the actual chips.  Early in MAc
  27. history a now defunct company manufactured a "portable" Mac clone that
  28. required purchasers to acquire ROMs, and insert them to make the unit
  29. functional.

  31. Theoretically, ARDI could buy up a bunch of old mac logic boards, unsolder
  32. the chips and send them along with their software, thus transferring the
  33. "licence" to the purchaser.  Presumably this would significantly increase
  34. the price of Executor, as logic boards containing ROMs that have features
  35. that Executor now emulates are still in fairly high demand since most
  36. presently available Mac software will function on Macs right back to the
  37. Mac Plus if you have the memory (and the patience <grin>).  We have Mac
  38. Pluses here that have been running alost continuously since they were
  39. purchased new.  Indeed, we have three or four that started out life as
  40. 512KE's.  We have burned out a couple of CRT's but that's it.

  42. I think that in the distant future ARDI might consider a licence of some
  43. kind,  But the more profitable, and hence to them more desirable course is
  44. total clean room emulation.

  46. Also, for you PC types who might not know, Apple is extremely tight about
  47. sharing the ROM info, even though it is now licencing to others.

  49. In my opinion this is a bit foolish on their part, unless they intend to
  50. bring out a competitive product.  ARDI could offer them an avenue into an
  51. as yet untapped market and save them the trouble of porting a lot of their
  52. apps to the Wintel platform.
