  10.         Installation Instructions
  11. ============================================================
  12.  
  13.     Version 3.0 is being distributed as both a 16-bit
  14.     Windows program and a 32-bit Windows program.
  15.  
  16.     If you are running Windows 3.1x or WFW, you MUST use
  17.     the 16-bit Smart Bookmarks even if you have Win32s
  18.     installed. If you are running Windows 95 or Windows NT,
  19.     use the 32-bit Smart Bookmarks. To run the 32-bit Smart
  20.     Bookmarks, you MUST have a 32-bit TCP/IP stack. Both
  21.     Windows 95 and Windows NT provide 32-bit TCP/IP stacks
  22.     that you can setup.
  23.  
  24.     To obtain a copy of FirstFloor Smart Bookmarks, first
  25.     download one of the self-extracting executable files
  26.     into a temporary directory.
  27.  
  28.         for 16-bit : sb1630.exe

  31.     Double click the filename to begin installation.

  33.   * Refer to the "Handling Existing Smart Catalogs" section
  34.     below for information on how setup handles catalogs from

  38.     Ticker. Ensure that Smart Bookmarks is run prior to
  39.     starting Smart Ticker for the first time.

  97.         Windows StartUp Group
  98. ============================================================

  100.   Setup installs a Task Monitor and a Task Bar Extension
  101.   (32-bit only) into the Windows StartUp folder. If the
  102.   StartUp folder doesn't exist, setup will create it in the
  103.   standard location.
  104.  
  105.   If you have relocated your StartUp folder, or are using a
  106.   version of Windows that uses a non-standard location for
  107.   this folder, you will need to move these items from the
  108.   newly created StartUp folder to the non-standard folder.
  109.  
  110.   You should reboot your computer after completing this
  111.   task.
  112.  
  113. ============================================================
  114.         Running FirstFloor Smart Bookmarks
  115. ============================================================
  116.   
  117.   What do I need to run FirstFloor Smart Bookmarks?
  118.  
  119.   You must be running a TCP/IP based Internet connection
  120.   before you can use FirstFloor Smart Bookmarks. The ability
  121.   to send and receive e-mail does not necessarily mean you
  122.   can run Smart Bookmarks.  There are three requirements for
  123.   Smart Bookmarks:
  124.       
  125.       1. A direct Ethernet connection to the net, or a
  126.          dialup SLIP or PPP account from an Internet service
  127.          provider.
  128.       2. TCP/IP stack
  129.       3. FirstFloor Smart Bookmarks software
  130.  
  131.   You can get a direct connection to the Internet through a
  132.   service provider in your area.  You will need to get a
  133.   SLIP or a PPP account from an Internet provider (for a
  134.   dialup account).
  135.  
  136.   When you have full Internet connectivity, you need to have
  137.   a TCP/IP stack, dialer, and WINSOCK.DLL or WSOCK32.DLL
  138.   file.
  139.  
  140.   If you get the error message "Cannot find WINSOCK.DLL" or
  141.   similar message for WSOCK32.DLL when running FirstFloor
  142.   Smart Bookmarks, this means your computer cannot locate
  143.   the WINSOCK.DLL or WSOCK32.DLL file that is part of a
  144.   winsock package.  You probably need to provide the path to
  145.   that package.
  146.  
  147. ============================================================
  148.         Handling Existing Smart Catalogs
  149. ============================================================
  150.  
  151.  *  Using Your Smart Bookmarks 2.0/2.02 Catalog
  152.  
  153.     You can choose to migrate your old catalog into the new
  154.     Smart Bookmarks 3.0 catalog directory during instal-
  155.     lation. If you choose to use your old catalog, Smart
  156.     Bookmarks will COPY your old catalog into the new
  157.     location. Your old catalog will remain unaffected by
  158.     this copy operation.
  159.  
  160. ============================================================
  161.         Uninstalling Smart Bookmarks
  162. ============================================================
  163.  
  164.     Smart Bookmarks 3.0 for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95/NT
  165.     should be uninstalled by running the "Remove FirstFloor
  166.     Smart Bookmarks" utility from the Smart Bookmarks
  167.     program group.
  168.  
  169.     IMPORTANT! 
  170.     You must reboot your computer to complete the uninstall
  171.     routine.
  172.  
  173.  *  Uninstall Does Not Destroy Catalog Data
  174.     
  175.     The uninstall routine does not destroy existing catalog
  176.     data. If you want to remove the old catalog, you must
  177.     do so manually.
  178.  
  179.  *  During the uninstall you may receive the message:
  180.  
  181.     "System indicates the following shared file is no longer
  182.     used by any programs. C:\...\FFSPY21.dll    If any
  183.     programs are still using this file and it is removed,
  184.     those programs may not function. Are you sure you want
  185.     to remove the shared file? YES/NO."  
  186.     
  187.     This is a safety check for the existence of Smart
  188.     Bookmarks, Smart Publisher or Smart Subscriber instal-
  189.     lations still using this shared file.  Answer YES, if
  190.     you do not have any other installations of Smart
  191.     Bookmarks, Smart Publisher or Smart Subscriber on your
  192.     system. Answer NO, if other installations exist.
  193.  
  194. ============================================================
  195.         Known Problems
  196. ============================================================
  197.  
  198.   *  Please see the Release Notes for a complete listing of
  199.      known problems and for additional instructions and
  200.      issues about this software.
  201.  
  202.   Here are a few things of which you should be aware in this
  203.   release:
  204.  
  205.   *  Trumpet Winsock for Windows 3.1x users may receive the
  206.      following error message:
  207.  
  208.      "WSAEINPROGRESS (#) BY FFSMRT16"
  209.  
  210.  
  211.      The workaround for this is to add the following line to
  212.      the [Internet] section of the ffclient.ini file stored
  213.      in your Windows directory:
  214.  
  215.      MaxAsyncConnections=1 
  216.  
  217.   *  PC NFS-Pro (2.0 or above) users may experience unstable
  218.      behavior caused by the number of asynchronous
  219.      connections permitted by their TCP/IP stack. 
  220.      
  221.      The workaround for Windows 3.1x users is to add the
  222.      following line to the [Internet] section of the
  223.      ffclient.ini file stored in your Windows directory:
  224.  
  225.      MaxAsyncConnections=1 
  226.      
  227.   *  The following error message may display in 16-bit
  228.      Internet Explorer 2.1 when you try to open a localized
  229.      page from Smart Bookmarks:
  230.  
  231.      "The attempt to load ffcache:http://www.firstfloor.com/
  232.      failed".
  233.  
  234.   *  Certain Monitor Me and Import buttons are not supported
  235.      in 32-bit Internet Explorer 2.0.
  236.  
  237.   *  If the program crashes, information about newly
  238.      localized URLs may be lost.  This information will be
  239.      recovered at local agent startup.
  240.  
  241.   *  We have noted problems with Spry's Internet-In-A-Box
  242.      protocol stack version 4.00.01.19.
  243.  
  244.   *  Large caches and/or large numbers of bookmarks in Agent
  245.      Results can cause delays in starting or exiting the
  246.      program.
  247.  
  248.   *  Opening URLs using HTML frames while View Smart Folders
  249.      or View Agent Results is in use from within Netscape
  250.      Navigator 2.0 causes a Java script error. You can still
  251.      view URLs using HTML frames by opening them from within
  252.      Smart Bookmarks instead of from within the enhanced
  253.      browser menu. 
  254.  
  255.   *  Smart Bookmarks for Windows 95/NT will not display
  256.      Agent icons in the left margin of the Smart Window pane
  257.      under Small Icon mode.  But, in the case of a window
  258.      wide enough to display multiple entries on a single
  259.      line, any appropriate agent icons are displayed to the
  260.      left of the respective entry, except the left-most.
  261.      Agent icons indicate a bookmark is monitored by an
  262.      agent.  This condition has no effect on monitoring
  263.      status and does not affect other display modes in the
  264.      pane.
  265.  
  266.   *  In the Agent Results View, performance with large
  267.      numbers of results will be slower if you group icons by
  268.      Agent or Parent.
  269.  
  270.   *  Web Searches against OpenText do not return results
  271.      when Smart Bookmarks is configured for use with
  272.      Microsoft Internet Explorer.  
  273.  
  274.   *  Smart Bookmarks for Windows 3.1x users may be required
  275.      to re-enter realm and password information after
  276.      upgrading to this release.
  277.  
  278.   *  Exiting while Smart Bookmarks is maximized causes it to
  279.      front and maximize at the next start-up event if Load
  280.      with Browser is enabled. To clear this state, simply
  281.      resize the window before exiting the application.
  282.  
  283.   *  Only HTTP URLs can be monitored by this application.
  284.  
  285.   *  Smart Bookmarks for Windows 3.1x may crash at winsock
  286.      @ '1:162a' during updates with Microsoft's TCP/IP
  287.      v3.11b in Windows for Workgroups 3.11.  This stems from
  288.      a bug in winsock.dll and occurs when the local HOSTS
  289.      file contains both the Smart Bookmarks address and
  290.      fully-qualified host name of an URL being updated.  The
  291.      workaround is to remove the entry from the local HOSTS
  292.      file and add it to the local DNS.
  293.  
  294.   *  Smart Bookmarks for Windows 3.1x may display the
  295.      following error when auto-loaded with Internet Explorer
  296.      2.0 and numerous Agent Results items are present:
  297.  
  298.      "This program does not support the protocol for
  299.      accessing http://url"
  300.      
  301.      The workaround is to delete the Agent Results items and
  302.      retry the auto-load operation.*  If you have run Smart
  303.      Catalog Maintenance and it reports your catalog is free
  304.      of errors, and Smart Bookmarks still reports errors in
  305.      your catalog, please contact FirstFloor Support.
  306.  
  307.   *  On some systems with very slow displays, Smart Ticker
  308.      scrolling can consume nearly all the CPU cycles.  If
  309.      you can access the properties dialogs, turn the 
  310.      scrolling off and continue in non-scroll mode.  To 
  311.      access the properties dialog:
  312.  
  313.      1) Click on the FirstFloor button at the left of the
  314.         marquee.
  315.      2) Select Preferences.
  316.      3) Click on the Marquee Display tab.
  317.      4) In the Display Properties section, click on the
  318.         Scrolling Rate drop-down list arrow.
  319.      5) Click None
  320.      6) Click OK.
  321.  
  322.      If further improvement is required, hand edit the 
  323.      registry setting to manually turn off the scrolling.  
  324.  
  325.      First, close the Smart Ticker. Then make a backup of
  326.      Windows\System.dat and Windows\User.dat. Run
  327.      REGEDIT.EXE from the Windows 95 Start | Run menu, then
  328.      expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Software | First Floor |
  329.      ffnotifier folders.  Select "ScrollSpeed" and choose
  330.      Edit | Modify and change the value to 3.   Press OK and
  331.      exit REGEDIT. Restart Smart Ticker.
  332.  
  333.   *  If running Smart Ticker on NT 3.51, do not try to 
  334.      create a shortcut or try to disable the ticker by 
  335.      turning off the Marquee.  There is no UI to turn it 
  336.      back on, since NT 3.51 doesn't have a small icon to
  337.      launch the preference dialogs to reinstate the Marquee.
  338.  
  339.   *  If Smart Ticker is started while a large number of
  340.      Smart Delivery agents or a large number of monitored
  341.      bookmarks are being updated, Smart Ticker will be 
  342.      required to wait for that update process to complete.
  343.      In some cases, Windows will allocate large amounts of 
  344.      System Resources (typically "user memory"), resulting
  345.      in a low-resources message from Windows. If this 
  346.      occurs, use the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys to access the Close
  347.      Program screeen, then close the Smart Ticker task.
  348.      Once the update process completes, Smart Ticker can be
  349.      restarted with no further problems.
  350.  
  351.      If the updating of scheduled agents is completed before
  352.      Smart Ticker is started, this problem never occurs.
