I. INTRODUCTION
____________________________________________________________________
This is a demonstration of the 5 CD action-adventure game, A Fork In
The Tale. The game features Rob Schneider as the voice of the hero.
A Fork In The Tale is the first full motion video (FMV) game that
enables the player to make decisions as the video streams. This
gives the player more of a "being there" feeling, since it will not
wait for you to make a decision. The interactive section of the
demo that you are about to play is called the Swale Fight. In this
fight, you are captured by crazy (but beautiful) women known as
Amalions. The Queen Amalion (who, by the way, hates men) is going
to force you to fight another man to the death. To do this, you
will need to click on the action icons that appear on screen. These
action icons represent moves that you can make while fighting
"Geebo," your opponent. For a description of the icons, look at the
section titled Keyboard Commands and Action Icons.

Setting the CD-ROM cache for drives 4x or better:

III. INSTALLING THE GAME
____________________________________________________________________
To manually start the installer, run Setup.exe in the Fork folder on
the CD.
If you've already installed the game and would like to run it, click
on the Windows 95 Start button, then point to Programs, then point
to A Fork in the Tale Demo, and then select A Fork in the Tale Demo.
IV. KEYBOARD COMMANDS AND ACTION ICONS
_____________________________________________________________________
Keyboard Commands
Press the Space Bar to pause the game.
Press Escape (ESC) to get to the main screen.
The Scoring Indicators
The blue X's represent how many hits you or Geebo have taken in the
fight. Once your X's are all filled in, you are knocked out and the
girls go home with Geebo. When Geebo's X's are all filled in, he
gets knocked out and you...well, you will just have to purchase the
game to see what happens to you.
The yellow icons adjacent to the X's represent your current energy
level. Every time you hit Geebo your energy level is reduced. As
your energy level declines, the yellow icons will become empty. With
some moves, you can hit Geebo three times (which takes away three of
your energy indicators) but they will only give him one hit (X), so
be careful. Successfully defending against a Geebo attack will give
you back one energy source. If you drop too low in energy you will
be unable to hit Geebo and you will only be able to defend. To gain
energy, click on the "whirlpool" shaped icon or the direction arrows
described below.
Action Icons
*Note*, Because "Notepad" does not support graphics, the icons are
described below without images.
The Star
This target is used to strike Geebo. If you are running low on
energy, this icon will not appear until you have defended and
regained energy.
Concentric Circles
This icon enables you to grab Geebo's arm to stop a punch.
Left Arrow, Right Arrow
These icons enable you to jump left or right.
Arrow In, Arrow Out
These icons enable you to charge Geebo or back up.
The Bread Slice
This icon looks like a slice of bread that is pulsing up and down.
When it is at the bottom of the screen it enables you to duck. When
it is at the top of screen, it enables you to jump up. Not all
moves can be dodged, so you still may be hit.
Deflect
The deflect icon looks like a few soft curves moving towards Geebo's
hands. This is a defensive move which will throw Geebo away from
you so that you can have some breathing room.
V. TROUBLESHOOTING
____________________________________________________________________
*Note* Always reboot after you have installed. DirectX requires some
drivers to be initialized after installation.
PROBLEM: My computer freezes. My computer crashes. The game stops
responding. The video is out of sync with the audio. The video is
sluggish or the mouse responds sluggishly. There are several things
you can try. We suggest you do this in the following order until
the problem is corrected.
SOLUTION 1: Hit the ESC (Escape) key anytime during gameplay. Click
on "Options." Select "Compatibility mode." Click "OK." Click on
"Play." Try playing the game again.
SOLUTION 2: Change your MIDI settings on your sound card to FM
Synthesis. Double click on "My Computer." Double click on "Control
Panel." Double click on "Multimedia." Select "MIDI" tab. Select
option which says "Internal FM Synthesis." Click "OK." Try playing
the game again.
SOLUTION 3: If you have a Compaq Presario 4716, we have found a
driver conflict between he sound card driver installed on this
system and "A Fork in the Tale." If this is the case, call Compaq
Customer Support at (800) 652-6672. They are currently in the
process of developing a driver to update the ESS 1888 audio chip on
your motherboard.
SOLUTION 4: "A Fork in the Tale" has been found to be incompatible
with some of the software sound card drivers for the ESS sound chip.
In particular, if you have the ESS 1888 sound chip, you must have
sound card driver v.4.04 or greater. Other ESS sound chips or
software drivers may also be incompatible with "A Fork in the Tale".
To Check What Type of Sound Card You Have:
Double click on "My Computer." Double click on "Control
Panel." Double click on "System." Double click on "Device
Manager" tab. Click once on the plus sign next to "Sound,
video and game controllers." If you see a device that says
"ESS" in front of it, then it's likely that you have an ESS
sound chip in your computer. Click "Cancel."
To Update Your Sound Card Software Driver:
You can update your sound card drivers by checking with your
computer manufacturer or sound card company to get a copy of
their most recent sound card drivers. Install these newer
versions of the drivers on your system and then try running
the game. If the game still doesn't run, call our Customer
Support phone number listed in the README.
PROBLEM: The audio for the game seems to "double-up" or keeps
repeating the sounds I'm hearing when I play.
SOLUTION: Change your MIDI settings on your soundcard to FM
Synthesis. Double click on "My Computer." Double click on "Control
Panel." Double click on "Multimedia." Select "MIDI" tab. Select
option which says "Internal FM Synthesis." Click "OK."
PROBLEM: After playing the game in "Low Resolution" video mode, my
desktop is not restored to its original resolution and color depth.
SOLUTION: When you play the game in "Low Resolution" video mode, it
will shift your desktop to 640 X 480 and 256 colors by default and
stay there, even after you have exited the game. This is a DirectX
bug. To change your screen resolution back to its original state,
use the Windows 95 "Display" Control Panel. Select "Settings" tab
then adjust your screen resolution with the dialog boxes available.
