  1. HEART OF DARKNESS - TEASER CD DEMO v1.3.1

  10. Insert the CD, go to the root directory of this drive and type INSTALL,
  11. then follow on-screen instructions.
  12.  
  13. When you save the configuration in the SETUP program some other
  14. files will also be copied to the selected directory on your hard disk .
  15. If you change your hardware configuration, you can run SETUP again from
  16. this directory. Ensure that the CD is in your CD-ROM drive in case any
  17. files need updating.

  20. To run this demo you will need a minimum of:
  21.  
  22.     a 486 DX-33 Mhz with 4 Mb of RAM (at least 2,5 Mb of free RAM)
  23.     a double speed CD-ROM drive or better (SCSI, IDE or dedicated interface)
  24.     a Soundblaster compatible soundcard
  25.

  65. If the demo hangs or stops suddenly, this is almost certainly due to
  66. a slow machine (CPU or VIDEO) and / or a slow CD-ROM drive.
  67. In this case, try this command line : TEASER /NS or choose NO SOUND in the
  68. SETUP.

  120. Please do not run the Heart Of Darkness Teaser in these environments,
  121. as they do not always allow the program to take control of the necessary
  122. hardware.

  129. To get the best out of your computer, please note the
  130. following hints and tips:
  131.

  133.     │ You don't need an extended memory manager like Quarterdeck's  │
  134.     │ QEMM, Qualitas's 386^MAX, BlueMAX, or Microsoft's EMM386.EXE. │

  141. Even Smartdrv, which caches CD-ROM drives, won't speed-up Heart Of
  142. Darkness's own CD-ROM manager.
  143.  
  144. SmartDrv and similar programs will eat your precious extended and DOS
  145. memory without making Heart Of Darkness any faster.
  146.  
  147. Its best to use only the HIMEM.SYS memory manager and to free up at
  148. least 520 K of conventional (base) memory.
  149.  
  150. This is particularly important if you have a computer with only 4MB of
  151. RAM or if you have a slow machine (486 DX-33 Mhz).

  162. Sound Blaster compatibility is always a concern in the PC soundcard
  163. world.  Please check the following in your own configuration.
  164.

  169. You may encounter problems with your particular sound card if it is not
  170. found in the SETUP program menu. Generally it is better to use the
  171. native card's driver than to rely on any Sound Blaster compatibility.
  172.  
  173. Even so, some cards may need further steps to make sure they work well.
  174.  
  175. - If you have a Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32 card, make sure that you keep the
  176.   DIAGNOSE /S command line in AUTOEXEC.BAT, or it may not be configured
  177.   correctly. This line is very important with these cards.
  178.  
  179. - If you have a card which is not directly supported in our
  180.   SETUP program, try to configure for the previous compatible model. But
  181.   this will not always work : for instance a Sound Blaster 16 can *NOT* be
  182.   configured as a Sound Blaster Pro. If you are not sure, contact your
  183.   manufacturer's technical support to find out what kind of sound card
  184.   it is compatible with.
  185.  
  186. - As a last resort, try to configure your Sound card as a raw 8 bit mono
  187.   original Sound Blaster 1.x card, possibly with DMA 1 and IRQ 7 or 5 and
  188.   I/O Address 220h. This is by far the most frequently emulated sound card.
  189.   Of course it sounds rather poor by 16 bit standards but it is better than
  190.   no sound at all !
  191.  
  192. - Some cards are configured by jumpers on their board, others just
  193.   need to be programmed. In the first case, make sure you use the right
  194.   values for the jumpers. In the second case, make sure that you use free
  195.   I/O addresses, IRQ levels and DMA channels or you will have a hard time
  196.   with your computer.

  203. Make sure that you can know your sound card configuration in case of
  204. difficulties. The SETUP program Setup Sound Card main menu option
  205. doesn't check the parameters you choose.
  206.  
  207. However, you can force a check by using the Play Sample option.
  208. This will try to configure the sound card with your parameters before
  209. playing a sample. If this doesn't work or locks the computer, you will
  210. have to boot and run Setup again to try another configuration.

  217. Heart Of Darkness and its companion programs have been carefully tested
  218. and optimized for a minimum of a 486DX33 computer with a Double Speed
  219. CD-ROM drive.  Here are some remarks about it.
  220.

  225. If you own more than one CD-ROM drive, you may choose any one of them for
  226. the Heart Of Darkness CD. Files will be found automatically on the drive
  227. you use, without asking you what MS-DOS letter it is. In fact, you can
  228. even change your configuration so that your CD-ROM drive letter changes
  229. after you installed Heart Of Darkness. It is not important to run SETUP
  230. again if you do that. But please try to choose the fastest drive available.
  231.  
  232. We recommend you to use the DMA option with your CD-ROM driver if you have
  233. this option (eg MITSUMI drive).
  234.  
  235. If you install the Heart Of Darkness CD on one particular drive and then
  236. run from another, be sure to run again the "Test CD-ROM speed" SETUP
  237. command again before to do that. This will update the configuration file
  238. for the CD-ROM drive you choose to use.
