  47. This version is primarily intended for users of Microsoft(R) Windows(R)
  48. 3.1/3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.1/3.11, or Microsoft Windows NT(R) 
  49. 3.51 who are connected to a local area network )LAN) or who have existing
  50. Internet connections (people who have an existing TCP/IIP connection, 
  51. a dialer, and an account with an Internet service provider).

  53. Note that this version is a 16-bit program and therefore you do not need
  54. to have Win32s(R) installed on your computer.

  56. If you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT(R) 4.0, you can download 
  57. a version designed and optimized for these platforms at:

  60. Internet Explorer enables you to browse and view HTML documents on the 
  61. network, in addition to documents on the World Wide Web or Internet,
  62. provided your network is connected to the Internet or provided you have 
  63. an existing TCP/IP conection. Other services, such as Gopher, FTP, and 
  64. NNTP news support, are also available.

  81. - A personal computer, 386 processor or higher
  82. - Microsoft Windows 3.1 or 3.11 or

  88. - A modem with a speed of at least 9600, or a LAN connection

  93. If you are accessing the Internet through a LAN or just browsing 
  94. your internal network (intranet), your network administrator can 
  95. provide you with the appropriate version of Winsock.dll.

  99. INSTALLING MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER

  102. Installing from the Internet
  103. ----------------------------
  104.  
  105. To install Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, carry out 
  106. the following procedure.
  107.  
  108. Important
  109. For the 40-bit version of Internet Explorer, the name of the download 
  110. file is Dlbm30c.exe. For the 128-bit version, you determine the file name
  111. at the time you download it.
  112.  
  113. 1. Create a temporary directory on your computer.
  114. 2. Choose to download Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, 
  115.    and save the download file to the temporary directory.
  116. 3. In File Manager, run the download file to extract the program files.
  117. 4. Read the instructions below for LAN installations and for installing
  118.    with existing TCP/IP connections.
  119. 5. In File Manager, run Setup.exe. Setup installs files in the 
  120.    directory you specify.
  121.    
  122.    Note
  123.    If you are upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer and
  124.    choose to install the program in a different directory from your
  125.    original version, please refer to the following section, "Upgrading 
  126.    over Version 2.01 and 2.1," for further instructions.

  128. 6. If you want, you can delete the temporary directory you created.
  129. 7. Run Internet Explorer.
  130.

  132. Upgrading over Version 2.01 and 2.1
  133. When upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer, you can choose to
  134. install the program into the same directory as your previous version 
  135. or establish another directory. If you choose the former, your previous 
  136. dialer settings and connection(s) will be preserved. However, if you choose
  137. the latter, you must do the following in order to use your pre-existing 
  138. dialer settings and connection(s):
  139.  
  140.   1. If you install to a new directory, but keep your existing 
  141.      program group, you must change the properties of any dialer 
  142.      program item(s) you previously created so that the Command Line 
  143.      and Working Directory settings point to the appropriate directories. 
  144.      (Note that the New Connections program item does not need to be 
  145.      modified.) You do this by clicking the dialer program item, choosing 
  146.      Properties from the File menu, and replacing all references to the 
  147.      existing directory with the name of new directory. For example, if 
  148.      you install an upgrade of Internet Explorer to a new directory named
  149.      NEWEXPL, the following change would be required:
  150.  
  151.     Command Line: C:\IEXPLORE\iedial.exe C:\IEXPLORE\CON0000.CON
  152.     Working Directory: C:\IEXPLORE
  153.  
  154.     Changes to:
  155.  
  156.     Command Line: C:\NEWEXPL\iedial.exe C:\NEWEXPL\CON0000.CON
  157.     Working Directory: C:\NEWEXPL
  158.  
  159.   2. Using File Manager, copy all files with the extension .con
  160.      from the previous directory to the new created directory.
  161.  
  162.   3. If during the upgrade you choose to use a new program group, just 
  163.      follow step 2 and copy the old dialer program items to the new 
  164.      program group. Repeat step 1 to change the Command Line and Working
  165.      Directory settings.
  166.

  168. Upgrading over Version 1.5 or Version 1.6 Beta
  169. If you are upgrading from the version 1.5 or version 1.6 beta, please 
  170. read the following special notes.
  171.  
  172. - The format of Iexplore.ini has changed, so Setup will make a backup
  173.   copy of your current Iexplore.ini file to a file called Ie16ini.sav.
  174. - You will need to reapply any user-selectable settings, such as proxy 
  175.   servers, in the new version.
  176. - Your Favorites and History lists will be preserved.
  177. - Win32s is not required for this version, so if you installed Win32s 
  178.   specifically to run the version 1.6 beta, then you can remove it from
  179.   your system. Please refer to the following URL for instructions on 
  180.   removing Win32s from your system:

  184. LAN Installations
  185. -----------------

  187. If you already have access to the Internet through your LAN, you will be 
  188. able to use Internet Explorer to browse the Internet. (If you are not 
  189. sure whether you currently have access, consult your network 
  190. administrator.)
  191.  
  192. If you have access, your LAN administrator should provide you with 
  193. the address of proxy servers that can be used.
  194.  
  195. To install Internet Explorer, you need to do the following:
  196.  
  197. - Make sure you have the TCP/IP protocol installed.
  198. - Run the installation in Custom mode, and make sure that the 
  199.   check box labaled TCP/IP Stack And Dialer is not selected.
  200.  
  201. Proxy servers can also be used, provided they are CERN compliant.
  202.  
  203. To enable use of a proxy server:
  204.  
  205. 1. On the View menu, click Options.
  206. 2. On the Connection tab, select the check box under Proxy
  207.    Server, and then click Settings. 
  208. 3. In the Proxy Settings dialog box, type the address of your 
  209.    proxy server and change any other necessary settings.

  212. Running on a Remote Installation
  213. --------------------------------

  215. If you will be running Internet Explorer on a diskless workstation:
  216.  
  217. 1. Install Internet Explorer on the server.
  218. 2. Copy Iexplore.ini to the client Windows directory.
  219.  
  220.  
  221. If you will be sharing a remote installation from a client computer
  222. running Windows 3.1:
  223.  
  224. 1. The following files must be in the client computer's 
  225.    Windows\System directory:
  226.  
  227.      Comctlie.dll
  228.      Vscrpt16.dll
  229.      Jscrpt16.dll
  230.      Secur16.dll
  231.      Security.dll
  232.      Msapsp16.dll
  233.      Msnath16.dll
  234.      Msnssp.dll

  238.    and optionally the following RealAudio files:

  246. 2. The client computer must have OLE 2.03 or higher installed.
  247.    Copying the OLE files will not properly update the syustem.
  248. 3. The file Iexplore.ini should be on the client computer.

  251. Before Using the Mail Client   
  252. ----------------------------
  253.  
  254. This software includes the first release of Internet Mail for Windows 3.1
  255. and Windows NT 3.51. Internet Mail enables you to send and receive electronic
  256. mail using the Internet. In order to use Internet Mail, you need to have an
  257. e-mail account.
  258.  
  259. If you did not use the Internet Connection Wizard to setup Internet Mail,
  260. you need to configure Internet Mail before using it. If it has not
  261. been configured, Internet Mail will ask you to enter the following
  262. information:
  263.   - The names of the network servers that you use to send and
  264.     receive your mail (the name of your POP3 and SMTP servers)
  265.   - Your login name and password on the server from which you retrieve
  266.     e-mail
  267.   - Your e-mail address
  268. If you are not ready to enter this information, contact your system
  269. administrator or your Internet service provider for assistance.
  270.

  272. Installing a Modem 
  273. ------------------
  274.  
  275. Before setting up, please make sure that your modem is turned on
  276. and properly connected. Setup will try to detect and configure your 
  277. modem. If a modem is detected, but the exact type is unknown, select 
  278. the modem manually from the list of supported modems.
  279.  
  280. If a modem is not detected or you select the check box labeled Don't 
  281. Detect My Modem, you can select the modem manually. However, the 
  282. default maximum speed will be 9600 baud. Therefore, you should manually 
  283. select a speed that matches your modem's capabilities in order to 
  284. optimize the performance of the modem.

  286. Note
  287. If you are running Windows NT 3.51, RAS is the supported method for 
  288. establishing dial-up connectivity to the Internet. For instructions
  289. on installing and configuring RAS, see the "Microsoft Windows NT 
  290. Resource Kit" or consult your system administrator.

  293. Changing Initialization Settings for Modems
  294. -----------------------------------------------------
  295. If you are using an older phone system or hardware, or if you are installing
  296. a "generic" modem, the existing initialization settings for the modem might 
  297. not be sufficient. If you have problems with the modem, you may need to 
  298. modify the Modems2.ini file in order to change the initialization settings.  
  299. Use Notepad or another text editor to open the file, and then, in the modems 
  300. section, locate the line for the modem, and modify the INIT line as needed.

  303. Using Third-Party Telnet Helper Applications
  304. ----------------------------------------------
  305.  
  306. To configure Internet Explorer to use a Telnet helper application,
  307. open Iexplore.ini and locate the [Helpers] section. Remove the 
  308. semicolon (;) from in front of the telnet= line, and type the path to 
  309. the telnet application. For example:
  310.  
  311.   [helpers]
  312.   telnet=c:\windows\telnet.exe %s
  313.

  315. Making a Backup Copy of the Software    
  316. ------------------------------------
  317.  
  318. 1. Make sure that you have three floppy disks (3.5" disks with 1.44 
  319.    MB capacity).
  320. 2. After you have downloaded the software and have run the downloads file
  321.    (see "Installing from the Internet" section earlier in this file) your 
  322.    temporary directory contains all the files that you need to make disks.
  323. 3. Copy the file Iew31_3.cab on your disk number 3.
  324. 4. Copy the file Iew31_2.cab on your disk number 2.
  325. 5. Copy the following files on your disk number 1.
  326.     Files.inf
  327.     Readme.txt
  328.     Iew31_1.cab
  329.     Setup.exe
  330.     Install.lst
  331.     License.txt
  332.     Install.bin
  333.         Setup.ini

  337. KNOWN ISSUES AND BUGS
  338. ---------------------
  339.  
  340. * No inline video.
  341. * No Internet shortcuts.
  342. * You cannot open another instance of Internet Explorer by double-clicking
  343.   an .htm file in File Manager or double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon
  344.   in Program Manager. To open a new instance of Internet Explorer, choose
  345.   New Window from the File menu.
  346. * Internet Explorer might have difficulty loading a very large number of
  347.   newsgroups (>16000). If your news server has a large number of newsgroups,
  348.   you should use a dedicated newsreader to browse the groups.
  349. * After upgrading to version 3.0, if you run an earlier version, you might
  350.   get an error dialog box stating "Could not :Load Entry Point in Security
  351.   Protocol Module: Proxy_Basic=Proxy_basic_Load,basic.dll". This is a
  352.   harmless warning. Click OK and continue or copy Basic.dll from the 3.0
  353.   installation over the Basic.dll of the previous installation.
  354. * You might experience problems running some plug-ins. We are working with
  355.   several vendors on these issues.
  356. * Pressing the TAB key does not select the Address bar as in previous 
  357.   versions.
  358. * If you are running Windows NT 3.51, the background of the Font Preview 
  359.   box (on the Font tab in the Internet Mail Options dialog box) will 
  360.   sometimes change colors. In some cases, this color may be very dark, 
  361.   making it impossible to see the font being previewed. It is, however, 
  362.   still possible to change the font. Restarting your computer a few times 
  363.   may solve the color problem.
