Before You Begin:
-----------------
Check to make sure that your computer has a CONFIG.SYS
file in the root directory of the boot disk and that it
contains the line FILES=10 (or a number greater than 10).
If your computer has a color display card but a
monochrome screen (like an LCD screen), run TAX ASSIST
with a "/M" to force it to use monochrome colors.
You may also run TAX ASSIST with a "/S" parameter to
turn the sound off.
Introduction:
-------------
TAX ASSIST '91 can help you estimate your taxes based on
the 1991 1040 Federal Income Tax Return. The deadline
for filing your tax return is April 15, 1992.
NOTE: While very helpful, this program is not intended
to be a substitute for professional advice, especially
since many aspects of tax law, such as minimum tax, early
IRA withdrawals and more, are beyond its scope. The
program is designed to give the average taxpayer an
estimate of his or her tax liability or refund.
Help:
----
Press the F1 key for context-sensitive help.
How To Use TAX ASSIST '91:
----------------------
TAX ASSIST '91 uses a very simple menu system. It offers
the following options:
Instructions
------------
This option displays the text you are reading right now.
While viewing this text, you may print it by pressing F5.
Tax Data Worksheets
-------------------
This option allows you to print several data sheets to
help you organize all your tax information.
Tax Return Estimator
--------------------
This option allows you to enter tax information. After
selecting this option from the main menu you are asked if
you want to (M)odify a previously saved tax return or
(A)dd a new one. Press M or A or use the cursor arrows
to highlight your choice and press ENTER.
You are now presented with the first data entry page.
Fill in the appropriate fields (or edit them if you are
modifying a previously entered tax return), pressing
ENTER to move between fields, until the page is complete.
Press PgDn to move to the second data entry page and fill
in the appropriate fields.
Use PgUp and PgDn to move between the two data entry
pages until you are satisfied that the data is complete
and correct. Press F10 to calculate an estimate of your
tax liability or refund for 1991.
You will then see a summary of your tax information,
including an estimate of how much you can expect to pay
to, or receive from, the IRS. The summary will also tell
you what tax bracket you are in.
Press Y and then ENTER to print out the summary. Press N
and then ENTER (or press ESCAPE) to return to the TAX
ASSIST '91 Main Menu without printing the summary.
Quit
----
This option exits the program.
Using the Program
-----------------
Several sample tax return cases are provided to give
you an idea of how TAX ASSIST '91 works.
You can play `What If' by entering one return for
yourself and then modifying it to test various filing
strategies. For example, you may want to find out what
effect depositing $2,000 in a deductible IRA would have
on the estimated bottom line.
