  8. Ah, life in the big city.  Everyone said it would be great, and you,
  9. foolishly believed them!  Little did you know about the bureaucracy,
  10. smog, and desperate weirdos you would encounter!  So of course, your
  11. goal in this game from the Worlds of ZZT is to ESCAPE FROM THE CITY!

  13. To complete ZZT's City, you must master 30 game boards filled with
  14. creatures and ingenious puzzles.  The game is very challenging and
  15. requires a high degree of mental skill as well as quick reflexes.
  16.  
  17. Worlds of ZZT requires a PC compatible computer with at least 512k RAM
  18. and any graphics adapter with a color or monochrome screen.  Keyboard,
  19. Joystick, and Mouse operation are fully supported.

  22. ^CGetting into ZZT
  23.  
  24. When you run ZZT for the first time, you will be asked whether to use
  25. colors and which input device (mouse or keyboard) to use.  After
  26. answering these questions, you will see a box of information about the
  27. program.  Press Escape, and you will see the title screen.  A menu will
  28. appear on the right from which you may begin playing the game, adjust
  29. the speed of play, restore a previously saved game, or look at the high
  30. scores.  To select a menu item, just press the highlighted letter.

  32. The first item in the menu [W] World, may seem a bit mysterious.  This
  33. item is used to load a different world, and right now ZZT's City is the
  34. only world!  But we'll be sending along two more worlds, ZZT's Dungeon
  35. and ZZT's Town on future issues.

  37. So, look at the high scores, change the speed of play to your liking, get
  38. out the cold popcorn and buttered watermelon, press P and get ready!

  42. When playing the game, use the cursor arrows or mouse to move.  Press
  43. shift along with cursor arrows to fire.  Bullets and gems can be found
  44. scattered throughout the city (you know how careless those street
  45. sweepers can be!).  At the pawn shop you can buy health, ammo and
  46. advice, but you'll need gems to trade so haggle a little (you can cheat
  47. the Broker if you can figure out how).  Various characters and ruffians
  48. can give you further information, and of course, help is available.
  49. Just keep you wits about you and have fun!

  53.  - When you discover a new object,  try touching it.  Nearly
  54.    everything in ZZT's Town has some sort of purpose.
  55.  
  56.  - Remember that you can often exit the room you are in by moving off
  57.    the screen.

  59.  - Save the game often.  Then if you get killed you can just restore
  60.    the game and continue on without penalty.  DON'T TRY TO SAVE GAMES
  61.    TO THE ODM DISK.  IT'S ALREADY FULL AND WILL CAUSE THE GAME TO EXIT
  62.    WITH AN ERROR!

  64.  - Don't feel overwhelmed.  It takes a long time to finish the game.
  65.    It is well worth the effort and you can always take your journey
  66.    one step at a time.

  69. ^COutside of On Disk Monthly
  70.  
  71. To run ZZT's City outside of the On Disk Monthly shell, just type ZZT.
  72. The first time you run ZZT, you will be asked if you want to use a
  73. mouse or a keyboard and if you want a color screen.  The program will
  74. remember your answers and use them each time you run it.  If you need
  75. to change some of them in the future, just run the program by typing
  76. ZZT /c.
