Note Cards is an organizational program for notes of all types: from formal
research to reminders of recipes in that stack of magazines under the coffee
table. Use the special HELP feature to guide the reference entry to exactly
the right bibliographical reference form or "free-form" it. This program is
adaptable enough for everyone.
The three major functions of the program are adding, browsing, and printing
notecards. Since Note Cards is primarily a "data organization" tool, we
recommend that you use the "COPY IT" function from the Big Blue Disk Menu to
copy the program to another disk which has more free space than the Big Blue
Disk publication disks. Use <F5> in the "READ IT" function to print a copy
of the documentation.
^1GETTING STARTED
The Main Menu contains:
Open/Create Card Group
Add Note Card
Browse Note Cards
Print Note Cards
Clear All Marks
Help
About Note Cards
Exit this program
Use the <UP> and <DOWN> arrows to move the highlight to Open/Create Card
Group. Press <ENTER> to display the Load Note Card Group screen.
If any Note Card Group filenames are found in the current directory, their
names will be listed in the column "Filenames." To start a new group, type
a filename and press <ENTER>. For example, type "mycards," and press
<ENTER>.
NOTE CARDS will verify that you wish to create the "mycards" group filename.
The program will return to the Main Menu, with the Add Note Card option
highlighted. Press <ENTER> to add note cards.
^1ADD NOTE CARDS
The Note Card Data Entry screen allows you to type in all the information
needed for the notecards. The sections of the screen are labeled with
field names as follows:
Title: The title of the article, recipe, etc.
Key: Key words that will be used to find this reference.
Reference: The formal or free-form information that identifies
this specific entry.
Notes: The free-form notes, just as would be written on a
standard cardboard notecard.
Fill in each piece of information and press <ENTER> to move to next field.
Press <F1> to view general help on using NOTE CARDS. Press <F4> to view
the special REFERENCE help as a guide to typing reference entries for
formal research. Note that <F4> is only active while you're editing the
REFERENCE FIELD. When a card of notes is complete, press <F2> to save
it. After the last "page" has been saved, press <ESC> to stop adding notes
and return to the Main Menu.
For example, if the filename created above, mycards, is to be used to
collect references to "Coaching Youth Sports," one entry might be as
follows.
"Title" might be entered as "Coaching YMCA Baseball."
"Key" might be the two words "baseball YMCA."
"Reference" might be "Hinton, Jonathon. 'Coaching YMCA Baseball.'
YMCA SPORTS HANDBOOK. Washington Press, 1985."
--or-- "YMCA SPORTS HANDBOOK."
"Notes" might be "Great reference for beginning coaches.
Fundamentals only."
Press <F2> to save the card, then <ESC> to return to Main Menu.
^1BROWSE NOTE CARDS
To look at notecards after they have been entered, highlight Browse Note
Cards on the Main Menu, and press <ENTER>. The Note Card Display screen
allows you to browse, print, or change the information for a notecard.
Highlight the "Next" or "Prev(ious)" fields at the bottom of the screen and
press <ENTER> to move from one card to another within the file. The notecards
will initially be displayed in sequence by "Title."
To EDIT (change), DELETE, or PRINT a notecard, use Next and/or Prev to
display the correct card, highlight EDIT, DELETE or PRINT and press <ENTER>.
Press <F1> to display general HELP about the operation of NOTE CARDS.
To select only specific categories of notecards to be displayed:
Press <F5> to bring up the Search Criteria Entry screen.
Type in the words of the Title, Key Words, Reference, or Notes
to be used in "searching for" the notecards to be displayed.
Press <ENTER> to move from field-to-field. Press <F2> when
done. Accepting the search data will automatically make the
browse listing appear based on SEARCH CRITERIA.
Press <F4>, highlight BY TITLE FIELD, and press <ENTER> to return
to the full-file display sequenced by title field.
^1MARKING NOTE CARDS
One of the features of Note Cards is the ability to select a group of specific
notecards to be printed. Select a notecard to be printed by displaying the
card using the Browse feature, and pressing <F6> to "mark" the card. You may
use the Search feature to restrict the notecards displayed in Browse. The
"UNMARKED" or "MARKED" designation at the top-left of the display will show
the new designation.
The Print feature allows printing of marked notecards, or ALL notecards.
To print another group of cards, first CLEAR the currently marked notecards by
highlighting Clear All Marks on the Main Menu and pressing <ENTER>. Then mark
the new group of notecards to be printed.
^1PRINT NOTE CARDS
To print notecards after they have been entered, highlight Print Note Cards
on the Main Menu, and press <ENTER>. The Print Multiple Records screen
allows you to select the type of report to be printed.
Four types of information may be specified for the report: records to be
printed, parts of each record to be included, heading information, and a
title for each page. Use the <TAB> key to move from one of the four types
to another. The <UP> and <DOWN> arrows will move the cursor from one
option to another within the type; press <ENTER> to select an option.
When options are correct, press <F2> to print the report.
For example, to print a Reference List of ONLY those notecards "marked"
during a search operation, including the date, time, and page numbers on
each page:
Press the <DOWN> arrow to the "Print Marked records" option
and press <ENTER>.
Press <TAB>.
Press the <ENTER> key to set/remove the "." until only the
Reference option shows [.].
Press <TAB>.
Press <ENTER> to place "." next to date, time, page.
Press <TAB>.
Type "Reference List."
Press <ENTER>.
Press <F2> To accept output settings and print report.
If a group of marked notecards was printed, to print another group of cards
you should first CLEAR the currently marked notecards by highlighting Clear
All Marks on the Main Menu and pressing <ENTER>. Then mark the new group of
notecards to be printed.
