While the crisis in Kuwait led some of the nation's gas station
operators to jack their prices up 14 cents, most increases in Shreveport were
still slight Saturday. A random survey of nine gasoline stations in
Shreveport showed prices up an average of five cents per gallon. Regular
unleaded gasoline averaged $1.09 per gallon, with super unleaded selling for
an average of $1.26 per gallon. One Shreveport station increased prices 13
cents Friday. Although the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait has sent oil prices
climbing, some motorists said oil companies and gas stations are taking
advantage of the situation to hike prices. "If it jumps up real fast I think
it's the companies trying to make a fast buck," said Shell Stephenson of
Shreveport who drives an average of 1,000 miles a week in his job as a
salesman. "It concerns me greatly, but there's not much I can do about it,"
Stephenson, 35, said.
Nationwide, self-serve unleaded gasoline prices increased 4 cents in
two days to a national average of $1.11 a gallon, the American Automobile
Association said after surveying 1,400 gasoline stations. In Tucson, Ariz.,
service-station owner Jesse Lugo conducted his own regional spot check of
dealers and found that some in California had hiked their prices by 14 cents a
gallon. "That's not justifiable; they're taking advantage of the crisis.
It's a shame," said Lugo, who received word from Chevron Corp. that prices
would jump 5 cents a gallon. He said he has refused to inflate costs further.
"Customers are very sensitive to a penny difference on gasoline pricing," said
Lugo, executive vice president of the Service Station Dealers of Arizona.
