WORDS FOR KIDS is a specialized word processing program developed for use
by children. It has many of the same features found in standard word
processing programs, including printer support for multiple printers.
Parents should review the "Getting Started" Section, set up the desired
options, and help young children locate the correct keys on the keyboard.
Encourage the child to type in creative pieces on familiar topics, then read
his creations aloud.
^1Getting Started^0
The first step is to set up the WORDS FOR KIDS options. An adult should
perform this step for young children.
After entering WORDS, an initial File Selection Menu screen will appear with
the legend:
^1Enter file name:^0.
Press <F2> to go to the Feature Selection Menu. The following screen will
appear.
Choose Font
Choose Features
Select Edit Colors
Print Width: Standard
Select Printer
Use the <UP> and <DOWN> arrow keys to move the highlight bar to the
desired option, then press <ENTER>.
"Choose Font" changes the appearance of the words that are typed and
printed. There are three fonts available: 1STGRADE, COMPUTER, WORDSFONT.
You may change this selection after seeing how it looks in the program, by
returning to this screen.
"Choose Features" changes the action taken by the program when certain
keys are pressed. Use the <UP> and <DOWN> arrow keys to move the
highlight bar. Press <ENTER> on an option until the desired ON/OFF setting
shows on the line to the right of the feature. For further information on
features, see the heading ^1Advanced Features^0 below. For a YOUNG child,
we suggest the following settings at the beginning. He/she may be introduced
to other features as he becomes more familiar with the procedure.
Display carriage return: ON
Advanced cursor movement: OFF
Search and Search/replace: OFF
Block movement, copying, deleting: OFF
"Select Edit Colors" allows the selection of colors for the screen
display. Just use the <UP> and <DOWN> arrow keys to move the selection
pointers (> <) and press <ENTER> to mark the one desired.
"Print width" changes the appearance of the printed copy on the paper.
Begin with STANDARD, change to compressed if desired. Press the <ENTER> key
while this block is highlighted to change from one to another.
"Select Printer" is the most significant selection to be made. Press
<ENTER> while block is highlighted. In the list which appears, find the
description of the printer attached to the computer being used. Use the <UP>
and <DOWN> arrow keys to move the selection pointer (->) to the correct
printer. Press <ENTER> to select. (If none of the selections exactly
describes the printer, select one which seems close. After the first print,
examine the output. If it does not look right, return to the Feature
Selection Menu and select another.)
Press <ESC> to have the computer accept the selections made. The initial
File Selection Menu screen will appear.
^1File Name^0
To start a new paper, a name must be assigned to it. In this program,
each paper will be referred to as a file. Type the name of the file (paper)
you wish to start and press <ENTER>. A blank screen appears and you can begin
typing.
If you want to change a file (paper) you have typed, move the highlight bar
to the name you wish to change and press <ENTER>.
When all changes are done, press <ESC> to go back to the initial File
Selection Menu screen. To get out of the program completely (exit to DOS),
press <ESC> again.
^1Cursor Movement and Editing^0
The cursor shows where anything typed will be put on the screen. The <UP>
arrow key moves the cursor up and the <DOWN> arrow key moves the cursor down.
The <LEFT> arrow key moves the cursor left while the <RIGHT> arrow key moves
the cursor right.
IF the "Advanced cursor movement" option in the "Choose Features" list has
been set ^1ON^0, then additional keys are active. (See ^1Getting Started.^0)
The <HOME> key moves the cursor to the beginning of the line.
The <END> key moves the cursor to the end of the line.
The <PgUp> key moves the part of the paper shown on the screen up.
The <PgDn> key moves the part of the paper shown on the screen down.
The <CTRL>-<LEFT> keys pressed together move the cursor left one word.
The <CTRL>-<RIGHT> keys pressed together move the cursor right one word.
Also useful are:
The <INSERT> key changes from "insert" words to "write-over" words mode.
The <BACKSPACE> key deletes the letter behind the cursor.
The <DELETE> key deletes the letter under the cursor.
To center a line of your paper for the printer, press <CTRL>-<C> at the
beginning of the line. A strange arrow with a "c" in the middle shows the line
is centered. Be sure the Centering Arrow is the first letter in a line,
otherwise the Centering Arrow itself will be printed.
Press the <F2> key to change from large to small letters on the screen,
and back. Press <F5> to print a paper with the letters as they appear on
the screen.
^1Advanced Features^0
The first group of advanced features in WORDS FOR KIDS were the cursor
movement keys such as <Home>, <End>, <PgUp>, <PgDn>, <CTRL>-<LEFT>, and
<CTRL>-<RIGHT>. See the ^1Cursor Movement^0 heading above.
"Search and Replace"
The second set of advanced features are Search (<F3>) and Search-and-
Replace (<F4>). These features are available if "Search and Search/Replace"
is set to ^1ON^0 in the Choose Features List in the Feature Selection Menu.
Use these features to find a particular word in the paper. Press <F3>.
Type the word to be found. Press <ENTER>. The word will be highlighted the
first place it is found in the paper. Press <ENTER> again. The word will be
highlighted the next place it is found.
To change a "found" word to a "new" word, use the Search-and-Replace (<F4>)
option. Press <F4>. Type the word to be found and changed. Type the new
word to be used. Press <ENTER>. The "found" word will be highlighted in the
paper. Decide whether or not to change the highlighted word to the new word.
Press <ESC> at any point to stop the Search or the Search-and-Replace
and go back to the normal typing of the paper.
"Copy and Delete Paragraphs"
The third group of advanced keys are the Block keys. These features are
available if "Block movement, copying, deleting" is set to ^1ON^0 in the
Choose Features list on the Feature Selection Menu.
Use these to copy or delete several words or paragraphs at one time. In
general, mark the beginning of the first word to be copied (or deleted) by
pressing the <F9> function key. Use the <UP>, <DOWN>, <LEFT>, and <RIGHT>
cursor keys to highlight everything to be copied (or deleted). Then
press <F9> again.
To COPY the words to a new place in the paper, and leave them in their old
place, use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the new place, press <F6>.
To MOVE the words to a new place, but take them out of their old place, use
the arrow keys to move the cursor to the new place and press <F7>.
To DELETE the words (take them out of their old place and not place them
elsewhere), press the <F8> key.
Press <F10> to "un-mark" the block and leave the words as they appear.
