^Cby Martin Richardson
Do you remember playing GO FISH, CONCENTRATION (MEMORY MATCH), OLD MAID,
or SLAPJACK? You will! With this delightful collection of card games which
brings these old favorites back to life!
KIDS' KARDS consists of four different card games designed for players of all
ages. A card game is selected with the UP- and DOWN-ARROW keys, or with the
number keys 1, 2, 3, or 4.
^COLD MAID
^C--------
In Old Maid, two opponents remove cards from each other's hand and discard
any resulting matching card from his or her hand. If a player selects the
Old Maid (the Joker), he or she must keep the card until his opponent takes
the Old Maid back in a future turn.
To select a card from your opponent's hand, move the large arrow using the
RIGHT- and LEFT-ARROW keys to the card of your choice, then press ENTER to
select the card. The matching card is then removed from your hand and the
pair discarded.
If a player happens to select the Old Maid, he or she is prompted to select
a position in his or her own hand to place the newly-chosen card. To position
the Old Maid, the player uses the same method that was used in selecting
cards: by moving the large arrow to the desired hand position and then
pressing ENTER. The Old Maid will then be placed into the player's hand at
the selected position.
The object of OLD MAID is to avoid being left holding the Old Maid in your
hand at the end of the game.
^CMEMORY MATCH
^C------------
Memory Match is a one-player game which features a grid of 20 cards placed
face down. The object of the game is to find the matching card for every
card on the board using the fewest number of guesses or turns. In an attempt
to match two cards, if the player does not select matching cards, they are
returned to the board face down.
To select a card, use the UP-, DOWN-, RIGHT- and LEFT-ARROW keys to position
the large arrow under the card you wish to flip face up, then press ENTER.
The card you selected will then flip face up, and you will be prompted to
select the second card in the same manner you selected the first card.
If the two cards you have selected match, they will disappear. If they do
not match, they will flip over to their original face-down position.
Play continues until all cards have been matched and removed from the board.
The object of Memory Match is to beat the previous low for the number of
moves required to clear the board. If you do so, you will be prompted to
enter your name and the lower number of moves for a new low score.
^CGO FISH
^C-------
In Go Fish, one player requests cards of a certain value from his or her
opponent in an effort to make a "book" of four cards of that same value.
If the opponent holds any cards of that value in his or her hand, these
cards must be given to the opponent requesting them. If the opponent does
not have any cards of that value, he or she says "GO FISH" to the player
requesting that card-value, forcing that player to take cards from the
top of the deck one at a time until four cards of the same value have been
collected to complete that book.
The game begins with a player's asking the computer for a card of a certain
value to match a card value held in his or her hand. The computer responds
to the request by indicating if it holds any cards of that value.
Each time a book of four matching cards is collected, the cards are removed
from the player's hand. Only four cards of the same value and only eight
books are possible. When all of the cards have been made into books, the
player with the most books wins.
^CSLAP JACK
^C---------
In Slap Jack, each opponent is given a stack of cards face down. Each player
then removes one card at a time off the top of his or her card stack and
places it face up onto a pile in the center of the screen. In doing this,
if a Jack is placed onto the pile, the first player to "slap" the Jack wins
the whole pile and shuffles it into his or her hand. If a player mistakenly
slaps a card other than a Jack in an effort to win the pile, he or she loses
a card to the opponent.
The game begins by asking for the level of difficulty desired. This level of
difficulty is simply the speed at which the computer will slap a Jack: the
faster the speed, the higher the level of difficulty. When a difficulty level
has been chosen, the game will begin.
The player is requested to press ENTER to remove and place face up a card
from his or her stack. As soon as a player has placed a card on the pile
face up, the opponent may "slap" the card by pressing the SPACE key. The
computer will then lay down a card from its stack and allow the other players
to slap the card. If a player runs out of cards, the opponent must continue
to lay down cards until a Jack appears. The first player to slap the Jack
wins the entire pile.
The first player in Slap Jack to capture all of the cards wins.
^COVERALL OPTIONS
^C---------------
During any of the four card games, you can return to the Main Menu and toggle
the sound ON and OFF as desired. To accomplish this, press F3. To exit to the
Main Menu, press ESC. Any time these options are available, they will be
displayed at the bottom of the screen.
