^1Welltris^0 is what you would call the "next generation" of Tetris, the
original Russian block-stacking game released by Spectrum Holobyte.
As you may remember from our review of Tetris in Big Blue Disk #33, the
object of the game is to stack geometric shapes made up of square segments.
When you have a solid horizontal line of these shapes, the line disappears,
you get points, and all the blocks stacked on top fall down to fill the gaps.
The game ends when the blocks stack all the way to the top of the screen.
In Welltris, you are now looking overhead at a flat 8x8 board with four
vertical walls connecting on each side of the board, to give you a three
dimensional view. The same geometric pieces fall down the sides of the walls
until they slide onto the flat board. You can move the pieces around onto
all four walls using the arrow keys, but when the piece reaches the board,
you cannot move it.
Each time a piece falls and there is no room on the board, it stacks
up on the wall, which freezes the wall so no piece can fall down it nor
can you move pieces onto the frozen wall. If all four walls freeze, the
game is over.
This game is a little more thought-provoking than Tetris and more fun,
too. The VGA version has excellent graphics and all the pieces have
different colors, depending on their shapes. The CGA version has nice
graphics as well, but all the pieces are the same color. The game also
supports Hercules Monochrome and Tandy graphics adapters.
Welltris requires an IBM PC or 100% compatible with 256K and a floppy
(5 1/4" or 3 1/2") disk drive. The game is not copy protected, but you need
the manual to answer a question at startup. Have a great time . . . this
game is FUN!
