^1PC Usage Log^0 will allow you to keep track of the usage of your computer.
PC Usage Log is comprised of three programs: PCUSAGE, PCLOGIN, and PCLOGOUT.
All three programs must be used in coordination to enable the user to keep
track of what their computer is being used for. The system is tied together
by one file: MASTER.LOG.
PCLOGIN
Each time you use your computer you should run PCLOGIN. This will prompt
you for the user and purpose of the current session and update the MASTER.LOG
file with the starting date and time of the current session. You may want to
place this program in your "autoexec.bat" file so that it will be executed
automatically each time you boot up your computer. See your DOS manual for
information on how to create or add to an "autoexec.bat" file.
PCLOGOUT
Once you have completed your work for the current session, you should
log out. This will update the MASTER.LOG file with the ending date and time
of the session.
PCUSAGE
This program allows you to produce various reports of PC usage, edit the
list of "approved" users and purposes, create a new MASTER.LOG, and purge the
MASTER.LOG file. Before every function, you must select which file you wish
to look at. This enables you to look not only at the MASTER.LOG file, but
also at files to which you have transferred data from the MASTER.LOG using
the Transfer or Purge functions.
^1View Log Data
This allows you to browse through the list of logged users and purposes
along with the times that they were logged in. It also produces a listing of
elapsed times for each session. After selecting the file to view, you are
asked for the order in which the list should be constructed. You can list
the data in logged order, alphabetical order by authorized user, or in
alphabetical order by purpose. The list will also flag any "unauthorized"
users or purposes.
^1Print Log Data Report
This allows you to produce a printout of the data in one of the logged
files. After selecting the file to print, you select the sort order. Next,
you may enter a title to be printed at the top of the report. The printout
contains the login times, elapsed time, subtotals for each user and/or
purpose, and produces a grand total of usage for the computer. It also flags
"unauthorized" users or purposes by placing an asterisk (*) next to them.
^1Edit Authorized Users and Session Purposes In Log File
This allows you to edit and change the authorized users and session
purposes contained in the MASTER.LOG file. You can enter up to 36 authorized
users and purposes.
^1Purge / Transfer Log File
This allows you to transfer the usage data to another file and reset the
contents of the MASTER.LOG file. This prevents the MASTER.LOG file from
becoming too unwieldy. Since there is a limit on the total number of
sessions in the log file, you will want to purge the file at least once a
month on single-user computer systems; more often on a multi-user system.
This function will not reset the users or purposes defined in the file.
Example of how to use the purge function :
At the end of every month, transfer the data to
"thismonth.log", where "thismonth" is the name of the month just
ended, and purge the master file. You will have monthly files of
all of your computer activity which can be viewed or printed at
any time, now or in the future.
NOTE: The file that is updated on logins and logouts is always the
MASTER.LOG file.
NOTE 2: When the MASTER.LOG file is purged, the last session will remain
in the file if the user has not logged out.
^1Create a New Log File
This function allows you to start a new MASTER.LOG file from scratch,
resetting the users and purposes.
^1Exit
This allows you to exit the program and return to DOS.
To run this program outside ^1Big Blue Disk^0, type: ^1PCUSAGE^0.
