Dear BBD,
Is there a way to put addresses on the label program which is included in
the Printshop Utilities Program on the Blue Disk #34? I really am impressed
with how the program allows a variety of graphics; but would find it more
useable if the address could be put on the label along with the graphics.
Any suggestions?????
I certainly do enjoy the Big Blue Disk and always look forward to receiving
the next one.

^1> The Print Shop Utilities program is meant to provide all the abilities we
^1>could think of to help you manage your Print Shop collection. One of the
^1>most common complaints we receive from people is that they are unable to use
^1>the Images we publish because they do not have the Print Shop program. We
^1>decided the capability of printing a selection of images on labels would
^1>provide that group with something they could use the images for. Due to size
^1>restrictions, we were not able to incorporate the features we felt would be
^1>necessary for a good mailing label manager program in the Print Shop
^1>Utilities III. A possible solution is to print a group of labels with the
^1>images that you want and then use a mailing label program to put addresses on
^1>them. If you do not have a program of this sort, we published one on BBD #17
^1>which can be purchased as a back issue.

Hello, Big Blue Disk!
Thank you for BBD Number 34. I write concerning Print Shop Utilities III.
1. Is there any way to view (on the screen) the image index I've created?
I know that I can get at it with a word processor, or that I can print a
copy, but it seems I should be able to review it from within PS Utilities 3.
Possible?
2. Printing the index from within the utility goes well, except that paper
feed is only 9.5 or 10 inches, instead of 11. I'm using a Panasonic KX-P1091i
in the Epson mode and the Epson default in the utility configuration, and I
get proper paper advance in other printing, e.g., printing out the PS
Utilities 3 text. My problem? Suggestions?
3. Similarly, I am not able to print images for labels. I follow the
routine PS Utilities 3 outlines, but the printer gives only form feed and no
printing.
4. Is there a way to print two or more images on a form, for example, on a
sign, without sending the sign through the printer more than once?
5. Keep those PS images coming!
6. Wouldn't it be nice if this Blueline editor could type out your address?

^1>ANSWER #1. Because of design constraints we were unable to include that
^1>capability. We were was working under memory constraints, and I wanted the
^1>program to run on as many computers as possible.
^1>ANSWER #2. It sounds like you either have the "skip-over-perforation" ON or
^1>that the paper length is somehow getting set to 9.5 or 10 inches. (One
^1>possible relevant question: Is this after you have printed graphics or is
^1>this straight from the start? If it is after you have printed graphics, it
^1>could be that one of the graphics commands is putting your printer in this
^1>strange mode, such as 8 lines per inch or the graphics 9 lines per inch
^1>linefeed.) Since the print index function concludes each page with a form
^1>feed and does not do any fancy printing, it should work fine.
^1>ANSWER #3. If you can print a file of images, there is no reason why you
^1>shouldn't be able to print labels, since I am not doing anything new to print
^1>labels. However, after each time the program prints graphics, it sends a
^1>printer reset function to the printer, which could be changing the parameters
^1>under which your printer functions. The codes for resetting the printer are
^1>in the configuration file. If you wish to remove them, consult your PS
^1>Utilities 3 documentation to determine exactly which line it is. (It should
^1>be the 7th line, two lines above the "N".) Remove ONLY the numbers (i.e. do
^1>not remove the entire line).
^1>ANSWER #4. The program is designed to help you manage your Print Shop
^1>images, not to replace the Print Shop program. The new version of Print Shop
^1>is supposed to allow you to use more than one image in a sign or card.
^1>ANSWER #5. We will! We have received a large number of excellent images
^1>from all you great artists out there and plan to keep publishing them on Big
^1>Blue Disk.
^1>ANSWER #6. Could "...type out your address..." where?

Dear Big Blue Disk,
I am a first time subscriber, with some questions and comments about your
BIG BLUE DISK. I would like to say first of all, that I enjoyed my first copy
of the BIG BLUE DISK.
I was curious about one rather useless offering on your disk. The Print
Shop Images does no good to anyone who doesn't have the driver program. Would
it be possible to offer the driver program on the Best of BIG BLUE DISK?
I had one problem running the BIG BLUE DISK on my machine. After a few of
the programs it told me to re-insert my DOS diskette into the drive I booted
the computer from. This is rather strange since I booted from my hard disk.
I have even tried to insert a DOS diskette into the A drive of my machine, but
everything is locked up. I have to reboot the machine before I can continue.
Any ideas why this is happening?
Finally, your Blueline Editor is excellent! I have used several basic full
screen editors over the years, and I really enjoy yours. I have replaced my
traditional full screen editor with your Editor. Would it be possible to
purchase the source code for your Blueline Editor to make a few minor
customizations to it?

^1> Since the Print Shop Graphics program is a product that is commercially
^1>available, we cannot include it as part of our product. We include the Print
^1>Shop Images because of the high number of people that use the product.
^1> Based on your description, we suspect you are running on a system tied into
^1>a network or that you are running under DOS 2.XX, because there is no
^1>"COMSPEC" in your system environment string. There are two ways to fix this
^1>problem. The first involves setting the "COMSPEC" to wherever your
^1>COMMAND.COM is located. If you are on a network, this could have adverse
^1>effects on your tie-in to the network. Refer to your DOS manual for
^1>directions on setting the environment. The second is strictly a "kluge".
^1>Simply delete the RETURN30.EXE file in your subdirectory and press a key
^1>whenever it says "... file not found ...". You might also have to do this
^1>with the RETURN.CHN file. Both RETURN30.EXE and RETURN.CHN are looking for
^1>the "COMSPEC" parameter in the environment string, and they stay in a loop
^1>until they find it. Since we are not there to personally examine your system
^1>(and we wish we were), we cannot tell why this parameter is missing from your
^1>environment.
^1> As a rule we do not sell source code to our programs. If you would like to
^1>see some adjustments made to the program, you might send me a list of them
^1>and I will see if we can fit them into our schedule. Actually, we have been
^1>toying around with the idea of extending the capability of the Blueline
^1>Editor, but have not had the time. However, I will always be willing to
^1>consider any suggestions.

Dear BBD,
I received my first copy of Big Blue Disk yesterday, and having run through
about 75% of the programs, am very happy with their content and quality and
the professional way in which you present the contents. (Disk #31)
I was equally pleased with the Best of Big Blue Disk. Your choice of
programs was well balanced. Thank you for this free extra.
Now for my question. You have asked for people to submit to you programs
that they have written, for publication in the BBD. Do they need to be actual
programs or can they be applications for existing programs?
I ask because I have written a spreadsheet application for Lotus 1-2-3. It
makes simple work of departmental budgeting. It includes areas for direct and
indirect labor, vacation, holiday, premium part of overtime, sort and rework,
health insurance, pension and payroll taxes. These areas are automatically
input from a worksheet area. Also included are expense accounts, ranging from
depreciation to repairs to reality taxes. Their are monthly subtotals for
labor and expenses, with the months based on a fiscal calender of 4 and 5 week
months. There is an area for the previous years budget numbers and the
year-to-date numbers, annualized to quickly see how you are doing compared to
the budget.
All calculations are made by the use of simple formulas. Macros are used
only to print the complete report or any part of it, the complete report is 4
pages long. All that is needed for the labor part is the employees hourly
wage, total vacation dollars to be paid, number of paid holidays, the monthly
cost of health insurance and the managers estimate of weekly overtime. The
expense part is free hand section that allows the manager to input any number
that is appropriate.
After having done this type of budget, for 6 departments, by hand and then
using this spreadsheet, the time necessary when using the spreadsheet, is
about 20-25% of the time necessary doing it by hand. I was able to give this
spreadsheet to the department supervisors and with only a short teaching
period, approximately 1 hour, they felt comfortable with it and confident that
they could complete it and have it be accurate. They were right because the
actual year end numbers were within 5% of the budgeted numbers the first year,
and they feel that this year will be even better.
If this is something you might like to use or at least look at let me know.
I can include a simple instruction documentation text.

^1> We have just recently run a Reader's Survey where I was surprised to find a
^1>very high number of Lotus 1-2-3 users in our audience. You might have
^1>noticed that we have started including Lotus 1-2-3 templates in Big Blue Disk
^1>on a regular basis. The results from the Reader's Survey is the reason why.
^1> I am always interested in evaluating programs for possible inclusion on Big
^1>Blue Disk. This includes Lotus 1-2-3 templates, and yours sounds especially
^1>interesting. Program/template submissions should be mailed to:
