  7.    These utilities are designed to help you make the most of Broderbund
  8.  Software's popular Print Shop program which allows you to design your own
  9.  greeting cards, letterheads, and other such things.  Back in BBD #18 we
  10.  published a Print Shop Utility program.  The program was so popular we revised
  11.  it, adding many new features and improvements, and published it in BBD #27.
  12.  ^1Print Shop Utilities III^0 incorporates all of the features of the earlier
  13.  versions plus many new ones such as: indexing your image files, printing
  14.  images on labels, separating images for transfer to another machine, and
  15.  deleting files.

  17.    These utilities operate on PrintMaster files as well as Print Shop; all you
  18.  have to do is set one toggle option (described below).  Thus, users of either
  19.  of these programs can make use of this utility, and if you have a library of
  20.  images in either format you can port them over to the other.
  21.  
  22.    This program was designed to perform similarly to Print Shop in an effort
  23.  not to confuse users.  Commands are chosen by highlighting a menu selection
  24.  (or pressing the first letter of the selection) and pressing the ENTER key.
  25.  Descriptions of the main menu options follows.

  27.    Note:  Print Shop images are contained in two files: a data file and a name
  28.  file.  The data file has an extension of ".DAT" and contains all the images.
  29.  The name file has an extension of ".NAM" and contains the name of each
  30.  corresponding image in the ".dat" file.  Both of these files must start with
  31.  the letters "GR".  When asked to enter Print Shop file names, no extension can
  32.  be entered.  The utility will automatically add the "GR" letters and the
  33.  extensions for you.

  35.  ^1Display Images
  36.    The first option is to display a Print Shop file.  The program will present
  37.  a list of Print Shop files (or PrintMaster files if you have toggled the file
  38.  type as shown below in the eleventh option) on the disk for you to choose
  39.  from.  If there are no Print Shop files on the disk or directory, you will be
  40.  thus informed and returned to the main menu.

  42.  ^1Extract Images
  43.    The second option allows you to extract images from a Print Shop file and
  44.  place them in another file, existing or new.  You move through a list of
  45.  images in the file and select the images you want extracted, in the order you
  46.  want them extracted.  The selected images will have numbers next to them
  47.  indicating the order in which they were selected.  When finished, the program
  48.  asks you to move a highlight bar to the name of the file in which to place any
  49.  selected images. If any of the image names exist in the destination file, your
  50.  choices are to Replace the image, Add the image (you would now have 2 images
  51.  with the same name), or Skip the image (do not put it in the file).  If you
  52.  want to place them in a new file, put the cursor on ^1New File^0 and press ENTER.
  53.  The program will prompt you for the filename.

  55.  ^1Merge Two or More Image Files
  56.    The third option allows you to combine two or more Print Shop files into a
  57.  single file, existing or new.
  58.  
  59.  ^1Print an Individual File
  60.    The fourth option allows you to print a file of images to your printer.  You
  61.  are asked if you want to use the file name as a title or you can enter your
  62.  own title.  You must first configure the program to use the correct printer
  63.  codes. The program prints eight images per line.  The image names are printed
  64.  directly below the image.

  66.  ^1Label Enhancer
  67.    The fifth option allows you to select up to twelve images from one of your
  68.  files and print them on labels.  After selecting the file and the images, you
  69.  are asked for the number of labels you want to print.  The program reads in
  70.  the selected images and displays the last one read on the screen.  You may
  71.  then specify where on the labels the images will be printed.  This is
  72.  accomplished by moving the image on the screen, left and right, until it is in
  73.  the desired position.

  75.  ^1PrintMaster <-> Print Shop
  76.    The sixth option brings you to a secondary menu that allows you to convert
  77.  images between Print Shop and PrintMaster. If you have only one of these
  78.  programs, this will let you use images designed for the other.  If you have
  79.  both, this will let you use your full image library in both programs.  In this
  80.  option you are again prompted for the file names to transfer.

  82.  ^1Edit Name File
  83.    The seventh option allows you to edit the name of an image.  First select
  84.  the name of the file and then select the image as with the Extract option.
  85.  Use the cursor keys to edit the selected image name.  Print Shop automatically
  86.  uses all uppercase letters in its image names, as do these utilities.  Use the
  87.  ^1Ins^0 key to toggle between insert and overwrite mode.  The ^1Del^0 key deletes the
  88.  character under the cursor, and the backspace key deletes the character to the
  89.  left of the cursor.  ^1Home^0 moves the cursor to the beginning of the line, and
  90.  ^1End^0 moves the cursor to the end of the line.

  92.  ^1Group Individual Images
  93.    The eighth option allows you to take images transferred from the Apple and
  94.  Commodore versions of Print Shop (in which each image is a separate file) and
  95.  place them in an IBM-compatible Print Shop file.  All of the images to be
  96.  grouped should be in the same drive or directory.  You will be prompted for
  97.  the file in which to place the images (new or existing).  Then you are
  98.  prompted for the drive or directory where the images to be grouped are
  99.  located.  Next you are prompted for the type of machine the images came from.
  100.  You are then presented with two versions of the first image.  Put the
  101.  highlight box around the one that looks OK to you and press enter.  If neither
  102.  looks OK then press ESC and you will return to the main menu.
  103.    Note for Commodore Users: This will only work on three-block Commodore
  104.  files.  On issue #46 of our sister publication, LOADSTAR, is a routine, Print
  105.  Shop Converter, which will convert Commodore files from two-block to three-
  106.  block.

  108.  ^1Extract Images for Transfer
  109.    The ninth option allows you to select a series of images and separate them
  110.  into individual files for transfer to an Apple or Commodore.  After you select
  111.  a file and the images in the file you want to transfer, you are asked to which
  112.  machine the transfer will be made.  You then choose which of two separation
  113.  methods the program will use.  The correct method to use depends upon how the
  114.  transfer will be made.  We recommend that you use the first one, and if the
  115.  images will not load properly or look strange when loaded, use the second
  116.  method.

  118.  ^1Delete a File
  119.    The tenth option allows you to select a file and delete it from your disk.
  120.  It has a safety prompt to allow you to change your mind about deleting the
  121.  file.

  123.  ^1Index Image Names
  124.    The eleventh option allows you to build, and maintain, an index of your
  125.  images.  You are asked to select a file to index.  If the file is already in
  126.  your index, it will have a small arrow next to its name.  If you select it to
  127.  be indexed you are asked whether to replace the previous data in the index, to
  128.  remove it from the index, or to abort and choose another file.  The index
  129.  contains a comment field where you can enter information about each of your
  130.  image files.  If you select Replace or if you select a file that has not been
  131.  indexed, you are asked to enter a comment pertaining to that file. If you
  132.  press the space bar, you will get a printout of the data in the index.  The
  133.  first page(s) is a list of each image file in alphabetical order, the number
  134.  of images in that file, and the comment you entered for that file.  The
  135.  remaining pages are a double-column, alphabetized printout of each image name
  136.  and the file in which it resides.

  138.  ^1Utilities Menu
  139.    The twelfth, and final, option on the main menu brings you to a secondary
  140.  menu where you can set up your printer and change the directories where your
  141.  data files are located.

  143.    The first option allows you to select your printer.  The program supports
  144.  all of the printers supported by Print Shop.  Epson is the default printer.
  145.  
  146.    The second and third options ask you for the drive or directory path where
  147.  your Print Shop data files are located.  The second is for the source drive or
  148.  path; that is, where the files are coming from.  The third is for the
  149.  destination drive or path; that is, where the files are going to. Once you
  150.  have selected these options, the program will automatically look for all Print
  151.  Shop files in that drive/directory until you change it.

  153.    The fourth and fifth options ask you for the drive or directory path where
  154.  your PrintMaster data files are.  They work the same as the two options above.

  156.    The sixth option asks you for the drive or directory path where your image
  157.  index files are.  Once you have selected this option, the program will
  158.  automatically look for all image index files in that drive/directory until you
  159.  change it.

  161.    The seventh option allows you to change whether the program operates with
  162.  Print Shop or PrintMaster files.  This indicates which type of file is used by
  163.  all of the previously-mentioned commands (except for the PS/PM file conversion
  164.  which always uses both types).  This option toggles between the two each time
  165.  it is selected.

  167.    The eighth option allows you to save your printer selection, the default
  168.  drive/directories where your files reside, and the main file type that the
  169.  program works with to the PSUTIL3.CFG file on disk.  Each time the program
  170.  loads, it reads this file and sets the printer, the drive/directories and the
  171.  main file type.

  173.  ^1Custom Printer Configuration
  174.    If none of the printer selections work for your printer, you can use a
  175.  standard ASCII text editor to modify the printer configuration file.  Load the
  176.  PSUTIL3.CFG file into your editor.  Below is a brief description of the items
  177.  in the file. For a Custom configuration, use a printer selection number of 11.

  199.  Print Shop and PrintMaster files take up a lot of disk space and Disk 1 is
  200.  almost full.  Copy the program to a blank disk or to your hard disk.
