This game may remind you of the popular Q*Bert arcade game. However, unlike
that game, Square Dare operates on a move-by-move basis instead of as a real-
time arcade game. This gives those of you lacking in the hand-eye coordination
needed at the arcades a chance to excel at the more cerebral task of planning a
route that touches all squares without running into the bad guys.
You start at the top of the array, and move diagonally in one of four
different directions using the Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys. The idea is to
try to touch all spaces, without getting killed by running into the enemy or
jumping off the edge. In more-advanced levels, which you reach by successively
completing the first level, you must jump on each space more than once to
complete the level; jumping on a space flips it through several colors.
Instructions are included within the program to further explain it.
^CSCREEN CUSTOMIZATION: ^1FOR ADVANCED USERS ONLY!
More advanced users can note that the screens used by the program are in fact
user-customizable. To change them, you'll need to use a text editor or word
processor that handles ASCII text files (like our BlueLine). The files to
change are DARE.SC0 through DARE.SC9, and SQUARES.SCR. The former nine files
each define one screen; O's indicate a space the player can land on, while X's
are empty spaces outside the grid. Type X's in place of O's or vice versa to
change the configuration, but don't alter the overall pattern of letters. The
SQUARES.SCR file contains a list of the screen files that will be used; you can
add or remove entries, one to a line.
Don't edit the original files on this disk; use a backup you copied yourself
so that the originals are preserved in case you mess something up or otherwise
want to return to the original configuration. Also, please note that this
changeability is fairly difficult to master, and is hence not recommended for
novice users. Some computer savvy and lots of trial and error is needed; if
that's not your bag, stick to using the wide variety of screens already built
into the program in its succession of levels. There's no need to customize this
program in order to enjoy it.
To run this program outside the BIG BLUE DISK menu, type ^1SQUARES^0.
