CB2215 0 0 0C AN INTRODUCTION TO VANILLA SOFTWARE'S DISKETTE COOKBOOK SERIES Welcome to the DISKETTE COOKBOOK SERIES, a library of cookbooks on diskettesthat uses "cb", a program that searches, scales and prints recipes from these cookbooks. You may use "cb" with any of the diskette cookbooks offered by Vanilla Software or with diskette cookbooks you have created using "cbplus", another program contained on your "cb" disk. This Help Screen like the others that follow describe how the Function keys (or F-keys) displayed on each screen work. If you would like to take maximum advantage of the software, we strongly urge you to read each Help Screen carefully. What follows is a description of each F-key associated with the first screen (the logo screen) and some other key things to keep inmind when using the DISKETTE COOKBOOK SERIES. A Note to Hard Disk Users If your system has a hard disk you will find that keeping your library of diskette cookbooks on it is much faster and more convenient than using floppies. It's easy to get set up for using hard disk in this way. The keyis to use the "install" program provided on your "cb" disk. First, copy all of the contents of the "cb" disk to your hard disk. (With the "cb" disk in Drive A and the hard disk set as default drive, type: COPY A:*.* ). Next, type: INSTALL. "install" will let you copy or erase cook- books - either Vanilla's or the ones you create using "cbplus" - on your hard disk. It will also let you set certain switches that, for example, tell both "cb" and "cbplus" to assume a hard disk or monochrome or color monitor will be used. As you copy or erase cookbooks the "install" program updates a file on the hard disk called HDLIST. This file can store up to 100 cookbook entries foruse by "cb". HDLIST tells "cb" what cookbooks are available for its use. In the unlikely event that problems develop with HDLIST you can always re- copy it from the "cb" disk and use "install" to recopy all of the cookbooks. MONOCHROME VS COLOR MONITORS "cb" works fine with color and most monochrome monitors, but with some monochrome monitors portions of the screen may not be very visible. If you use a monochrome monitor use "install" to reset the monitor switch. F9 HELP Pressing F9 on this and subsequent screens retrieves the Help Screens neededat the moment. Pressing the PrtSc key gives you a hard copy. F10, THE EXIT KEY Another F-key that is used frequently throughout "cb" is F10, the Exit key. Unless otherwise stated, this key lets you go back to the preceeding screen. In the case of the first menu screen, the Master Options List, F10 takes you out of "cb" and back to the Operating System. Although not always indicated on the display, F10 will let you exit many other functions that you may not want to complete. HOW TO OBTAIN A FREE CATALOGUE If you wish to obtain a current catalogue of the latest offerings in the DISKETTE COOKBOOK SERIES - including dozens of excellent diskette cookbooks - just send a card with your name and address to: DISKETTE COOKBOOK SERIES Catalogue Vanilla Software 3345 Lakeshore Avenue Oakland, CA 94610 BACK-UP COPIES The software and cookbooks in the Disktette Cookbook Series are not copy protected. This enhances the product's usefulness and convenience. While we encourage you to make back-up copies of every disk - for your own use only - we trust you'll respect the copyrights maintained on these products. A Final Note to More Advanced Users Each cookbook in the Series is made up of up to nine files: IDENTIFY, RECTITLE, INGREDNT, INSTRUCT, INGINDEX, INSTINDX, KEYWORDS, PERINDEX, and PERCOMNT (exists only if personal comments were added). When copied to hard disk these files carry an extension equal to the cookbook id, eg. A01. HELP FOR THE MASTER OPTIONS LIST SCREEN The Master Options List, with the cookbook title displayed at the top, takesyou into the cookbook by offering several choices for finding recipes. ThisHelp Screen describes these search and other functions. Help Screen describes these search and other functions. Note to Hard Disk Users: If you are using your library of cookbooks on hard disk, you may switch fromone cookbook to another by pressing either the right or left arrow keys. This will switch you to one of the cookbooks listed at the bottom of the screen. Except when searching cookbooks, this is the only way you can switch to another cookbook during the session. F1 SEARCH RECIPES/ GENERATE TITLE LIST: As with the BROWSE function below (see F2), SEARCH retrieves recipes that match the title words, ingredients, keywords like "seafood" or "dessert" or personal comment words that you typein. Since you type in your own personal comments, this way of SEARCHING is particularly powerful. You may add your own keywords or, perhaps, rate the recipe (so you can easily find your favorites.) Unlike BROWSE which displays the recipes directly, SEARCH displays a list of recipe titles to choose from. For more information, press Help for the Search Recipes screen. criteria you set in the same way that SEARCH does. However, unlike SEARCH, BROWSE displays the recipes directly. For more information, press the Help key associated with the Browse Through Recipes screen. F3 GET A SPECIFIC RECIPE / BROWSE SEQUENTIALLY : If you know the number ofthe recipe you want, you may use this function to go directly to that recipe. "cb" will prompt you for the number. Any whole number from 1 to the highest recipe number on the inserted cookbook diskette will be accepted. By pressing the F3 BROWSE function when you reach the recipe you have selected, you may then browse the entire cookbook sequentially. "cb" lets you browse easily, both forward and backward, by using the right and left arrow keys. F4 DISPLAY THE RECIPE KEYWORD LIST: Using the F1 or F2 keys above you can retrieve recipes by matching any word or part of a word in the recipe's title or ingredient list. Keywords, such as "appetizer" or "seafood", give you another way to retrieve recipes. This function displays a list of the most common keywords used throughout the DISKETTE COOKBOOK SERIES. If you want to print a list of the specific keywords used in this cookbook use the F6 SEE LIST OF RECIPE TITLES function described below. F5 SEE INTRODUCTION TO THIS COOKBOOK: This key allows you to learn more about the cookbook, the people who are responsible for it, and other valuable information. For cookbooks containing more than one diskette, the introduction is found only on the first diskette. F6 SEE LIST OF RECIPE TITLES: You may either display (D) or print (P) all or the recipes contained on the current cookbook. You have the option of seeing the recipe's keywords along with its title. Printing or displaying the list can be stopped at any time by pressing the F10 key. F10 EXIT FROM THIS "cb" SESSION: lets you run "cbplus" or return to DOS. HELP FOR THE SEARCH RECIPES / GENERATE TITLE LIST SCREEN The Search Recipes / Generate Title List Screen, like the Browse Through Recipes Screen, allows you to retrieve all recipes in the DISKETTE COOKBOOK SERIES that meet the criteria you set. You type in the title words, ingre- dients, keywords and personal comment words that the recipe must contain and"cb" will compile a list of matching recipe titles. This list appears on Recipe Title List Screen which is explained by its own Help Screen. There are four ways to search. You may use these in any combination: F1 TITLE - will get all recipes whose title contains the words you specify. F2 INGREDIENT - will retrieve all recipes containing the ingredients you specify. If you're looking for a principal ingredient we recommend a title search because most recipe titles contain the principal ingredient and a title search is much faster than an ingredient search. F3 KEYWORDS - will find all recipes containing the keywords you specify. There are several instances where this may be helpful. If you're not sure what kind of seafood or beef dish you want, using "seafood" and "beef" in a keyword search will likely find them all. Specifying a keyword also helpsnarrow a search. If you want to make a dessert containing apples, specifying"dessert" lets you skip recipes you're not interested in, eg. Waldorf Salad.F4 COMMENT - finds all recipes whose personal comment contains the words youspecify. Since you can type in whatever personal comment you choose, this way of searching is the most flexible. For example, if you have rated each recipe you've tried, you can now easily retrieve your favorites. Select F1 through F4 depending upon the kind of search words you wish to type in first. The cursor will be positioned at the start of the high- lighted area you have chosen. Within this highlighted area type in the words or parts of words -- with a maximum of three per section -- that you want the recipe to contain. All four arrow keys are available to move the cursor and to make corrections. (We advise against using the insert, delete, or backspace keys, however.) Whether you use upper or lower case, "cb" will be able to find a match. After typing in the search word(s) press the Enter key (<--'). You may correct what you have entered or add words in other sections by repeating the process as often as you like. Whensatisfied with the words you have typed in, press F5 or, if you are using a hard disk, you may press either F5 or F6, to begin the search. F5 BEGIN SEARCH? F5 will search the current cookbook only - that's the one whose title you saw at the top of the Master Options List. When "cb" has completed searching this cookbook you will be asked to search another. F6 SEARCH ALL? If you are searching recipes on your hard disk, pressing this key will let you search, non-stop, every cookbook authorized for this session. Each timea matching recipe is found, the title is both printed and displayed on the screen. This option lets you search an entire library of cookbooks auto- matically. A FEW MORE HINTS ABOUT SEARCHING THE COOKBOOK Suppose you press F1 TITLE and type in the word "pie" in the title area. "cb" will search the cookbook for all recipes containing "pie" in the title. If you had typed in "pi" instead, you would get the same list of titles plus others. The expanded list might include titles containing wordslike "pizza" or "pickled". Because a recipe may have only one of what you are looking for, we recommend that, whenever possible, you use the singular rather than the plural form (eg., egg rather than eggs). Suppose you type in more than one word. For example, if you type "chocolate"in the ingredients section and "dessert" in the keywords area, you will get a list of all recipes with both "chocolate" as an ingredient and "dessert" as a keyword. Recipes with only one or the other would not be included. Ifyou want a list containing just one or the other you must compile one list for "chocolate" and, using the ADD RECIPES function (F2 on the Recipe Title Screen), add a second list for "dessert". Because "cb" looks at every ingredient in each recipe, an ingredient search is generally slower than the other kinds of searches. This is why we recommend a title search when you're looking for recipes that contain a particular principal ingredient. We suggest that you take care in not being too restrictive in your search. The more search words you type in, the less likely it is that a matching recipe will be found. You may search as many diskettes as you like without having to retype the search words each time. When "cb" has reached the end of a diskette, you will be prompted to search another. If you wish to do so, type in "y" or "Y", otherwise type in "n" or "N". Help for the Recipe Title List Screen will explain how to use the list of recipes titles which you have compiled. HELP FOR THE BROWSE THROUGH RECIPES SCREEN The Browse Through Recipes Screen, like the Search Recipes / Generate Title List Screen, allows you to retrieve all recipes in the DISKETTE COOKBOOK SERIES that meet the criteria you set. You type in the title words, ingredients, keywords and personal comment words that the recipes must con- tain and "cb" will display -- one at a time -- all of the matching recipes rather than just the titles as with the search mode. Because Browse works in much the same way as Search, we suggest that you read the Help Screen for the Search Recipes / Generate Title List Screen, ifyou have not done so already. HELP FOR THE RECIPE TITLE LIST SCREEN The Recipe Title List is displayed after the Search Recipes / Generate TitleList Screen. It shows the titles of all recipes on the searched diskettes that match the title words, ingredients, keywords and personal comment wordstyped in on the previous screen. From this list of titles you can easily select a recipe to display and use. "cb" lets you stay in control during the search. It displays the number of the cookbook and recipe being searched at the botton of the screen. A bar at the bottom of the screen tells you how much of the diskette has been searched. If you wish to interrupt the search, press F10. The search will stop and you will be prompted to search another diskette. You may respond affirmatively and switch cookbook diskettes, or, instead, exercise one of the functions listed below. When a matching recipe is found, its title is displayed. Unless you have specified F3 AUTOSEARCH, the software will wait for you to use one of the following functions: F1 CHOOSE RECIPE: When this key is pressed the software prompts, "TYPE IN A NUMBER FROM THE LEFT MOST COLUMN". If you are interested in the fifth recipe, for example, type in "5" and press the Enter key (<--'). "cb" will then display this recipe, assuming it is contained on the diskette in your disk drive. If it is not, the software will prompt you to place the proper diskette in your drive. F2 ADD RECIPES: While "remembering" all of the recipes it has found, this function lets you go back to the Search Recipes / Generate Title List Screenand, using new search words, add new recipe titles to the existing list. Asdescribed in the example on the Search Recipes Help screen, you could add all recipes containing "dessert" as a keyword to the list containing "chocolate" as an ingredient. The software will recognize duplicate recipesand not add them so that recipes containing both "chocolate" and "dessert" would not appear twice. F3 AUTOSEARCH: This function will let you either fill the entire display with matching recipes or search the entire diskette trying to do so, whichever comes first. It lets you walk away from the computer and return after the search is complete. Once you have searched the diskette, you can use this function to automatically search another. In this way you can quickly search hundreds, even thousands, of recipes with ease. Please note, because the software only "remembers" one screenful of recipe titles at a time, if you press F3 when the screen is filled, "cb" will overlay the titles beginning at the top of the list. F10 EXIT: This returns you to the Search Recipes / Generate Title List Screen. ANY OTHER KEY CONT. SEARCH: Pressing any key, other than the F-keys just described, continues the search until the next matching recipe is found and displayed. Repeat this step each time you wish to see another title. This lets you control the search at your own pace. When you see a recipe title which looks interesting you can display the recipe immediately without further searching. If it is not what you want, the Exit key on the Recipe Screen will return you to this screen to continue your search. As with F3 above, when the screen is filled, pressing any other key causes "cb" to overlay the titles with new ones, beginning at the top of the list. HELP FOR THE RECIPE SCREEN The Recipe Screen displays the recipe you have selected. It is shown in a cookbooklike format -- just the way you are used to seeing it. For recipes which exceed one screen, to see the rest of the recipe, press any key other than one of the Function keys described below. This screen offers several options for using a recipe: F1 PRINT: If you have a functioning and compatible printer attached to yourcomputer, this option prints the displayed recipe. This is handy because itlets you carry the recipe to the kitchen. It's also an easy way to share recipes with your family and friends. F2 REVISE: This function lets you revise, up or down, the amount of any ingredient, or the number served or made. You should find it useful in manyinstances. Suppose you plan to prepare a recipe, written to serve four, fora dinner party of eight. With this option you can simply revise the number served. Or, imagine you have only half as much of an ingredient as the recipe calls for. You can easily change this ingredient amount to what you have on-hand. The software will adjust all of the other amounts accordingly. The process requires two simple steps; selecting an amount to revise and typing in the new amount. "cb" does the rest for you, adjusting proportionally, the other amounts in the recipe. The revision is in effect only while you work with the recipe. If you leave this recipe and then comeback to it, the recipe will be displayed with the original amounts unchanged. Put another way, the version of the recipe on the diskette does not change. It's easy to revise the recipe amounts. By moving the highlight forward andand backward using the right and left arrow keys, you can select an amount to revise. As you move the highlight the prompt at the bottom of the screen, "CHANGE FROM (old amount) TO -", will change appropriately. Once you have typed in the new amount press the Enter key. Please keep in mind that the software adjusts all amounts indiscriminately. As in the case of certain spices or yeast in baking recipes, this is not always appropriate. Also, where amounts are mentioned in the recipe's instructions or as part of the ingredient description, be aware that "cb" will not adjust these. If you make an error there is no need to worry. You may revise the recipe as many times as you like. F3 BROWSE: This function lets you browse forward or backward through the recipes that match the browse words you keyed in on the Browse Through Recipes Screen. It also lets you browse the recipes sequentially if you reached the Recipe Screen using F3, GET A SPECIFIC RECIPE / BROWSE SEQUENTIALLY, on the Master Options List. To browse forward press the rightarrow key; to browse backward press the left arrow key. While browsing youmay use the displayed recipe by pressing F10 to return to the Recipe Screen options. When you wish to continue browsing, press F3 again. F4 COMMENT: This function takes you to the Personal Comment Screen. It lets you add a comment to give the recipe your personalized touch. It can be anything: a critique, a new ingredient or a change to the instructions. To find out more about this, press the Help key for the Personal Comment Screen. F5 SHOPPING: If you would like a list to take shopping this F-key prints the ingredient section of the displayed recipe. To use it you must have a functioning and compatible printer attached to your computer. F6 REDISPLAY: For multipage recipes, this function lets you return to the first page. F7 TERMS: Pressing this key will display a handy conversion table of weightand measure equivalents and a detailed glossary of common cooking terms. F10 EXIT: This key will return you to either the Master Options List, the Recipe Title List or the Browse Through Recipes Screen, depending upon whichyou came from. A final reminder when ordering: none of our cookbooks can be used without the "cb" software. Now on to Section 1. "Recipe Software" on the next page.Section 1. "Recipe Software" "Recipe software" lets you use your personal computer to search recipes moreeasily than with a printed cookbook. How much easier depends upon the powerof your hardware. The more recipes you can search and the faster you can search them, the more value the software has. While it may not take long tomanually search a single printed cookbook's index, it becomes a very tedioustask to search many such indeces at one sitting. The best "recipe software", such as Vanilla Software's Diskette Cookbook Series (DCS), lets you quickly search an entire library of cookbooks without switching a singledisk. The quality of the recipes is a critical factor as well. "Recipe software" usually lets you type in and store your own favorite recipes, but this is a time consuming task. Many vendors also prepackage one or several disks withrecipes already contained on them. Usually these are prepackaged in some generic way such as dessert recipes or entres. The DCS is unusual in that it has taken several dozen quality printed cookbooks covering a wide spectrum of cuisines and transcribed them word-for-word to disk. This savesa great deal of time in being able to immediately use thousands of recipes. In addition, Vanilla's "cbplus" software lets you add your own recipes and create cookbooks that are compatible with the rest of the Series. "cbplus" is also a must for the practicing or would-be cookbook author. Flexibility is almost as important a factor in recipe searching as is speed. Most "recipe software" lets you search for a particular ingredient or word in the recipe title. The DCS goes further. It lets you search for a word in a personal comment that you can add to each recipe. This lets you searchrecipes in any way that you can imagine. You could, for example, rate the recipes you have tried and record the ratings with the recipe. Those that are your favorites - or Uncle Joe's favorites - can be easily retrieved. Next to fast and flexible recipe searching, the most important feature that "recipe software" must have is ease of use. If you have to refer to a difficult-to-follow User manual every time you want to use the software, youprobably won't use it very often. The DCS is carefully designed to be easy to use. While it's a good idea to read the Help screens on the first time through, the software is really straightforward enough to use just by following the menu screens provided. "Recipe software" has other features that are useful. One of these is the ability to scale recipes to serve any number of people or to match the amount of a particular ingredient on-hand. Another useful feature is the ability to create a shopping list based upon selected recipes. The DCS doesthese things and much more. Section 2. The DCS Order Form Beginning on the next screen is the DCS Order Form. If you would like more detail about the software and cookbooks available from Vanilla Software before ordering, we would be happy to send you a free catalogue. We also have available a more fully functional demo disk for $3. ------------ ORDER FORM (Use the PrtSc key to print a hard copy) -----------|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|| QTY | ITEM # | DESCRIPTION | PRICE | AMOUNT ||-----|--------|------------------------------------------|-------|--------||_____|________|_"cb" disk (contains "cbplus")____________|_20.00_|________||_____|________|_"cb" disk w/ 2 cookbooks @ regular price_|_16.00_|________||_____|________|_"cb" w/ 3 or more cookbooks @ reg. price_|_14.00_|________||_____|_A01____|_Dr. Cookie's Cookbook____________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A02____|_101 Omelette Recipes_____________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A03____|_Ground Turkey Creations__________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A04/A05|_Begged Borrowed and Stollen (2 disks)____|__8.00_|________||_____|_A06____|_Pasta From A to Ziti_____________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A07____|_A Salad A Day____________________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A08____|_The Seven Chocolate Sins_________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A09____|_Kwik 'N Ezy Microwave Cooking____________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A10____|_Hors D'Oeuvres Everybody Loves___________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A11____|_Guam Cookbook____________________________|__6.00_|________||_____|________|_SUBTOTAL_________________________________|_______|________||_____|_A12____|_When You're Out Of...____________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A13____|_Where There's Smoke There's Dinner_______|__6.00_|________||_____|_A15/A16|_The Wonderful World of Honey (2 disks)___|__8.00_|________||_____|_A17____|_Dining For Two___________________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A18____|_The Twelve Days of Christmas Cookbook____|__6.00_|________||_____|_A19____|_The Country Mouse________________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A20____|_Any Time's A Party_______________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A20____|_Lebanese Cuisine_________________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A22/A23|_Southern Legacies (2 disks)______________|__8.00_|________||_____|_A24____|_Four Ingredient Cookbook_________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A25____|_Quickies for Singles_____________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A26____|_The Guiltless Gourmet____________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A27/A29|_The Best of Jewish Cookery (3 disks)_____|_10.00_|________||_____|_A30____|_Snackers_________________________________|__6.00_|________||_____|_A31/A32|_Feasting Naturally (2 disks)_____________|__8.00_|________||_____|________|_All 25 cookbooks + "cb" @ 40% off list___|109.00_|________||_____|________|__________________________________________|_______|________||_____|________|_SUBTOTAL_________________________________|_______|________||_____|________|_SUBTOTAL FIRST TWO PAGES_________________|_______|________||_____|________|_Sales Tax (CA residents only)____________|_7.0%__|________||_____|________|_Postage and handling_____________________|___2.50|________||_____|________|_TOTAL____________________________________|_______|________| Ship to: NAME________________________________________________________________________COMPANY_____________________________________________________________________ADDRESS_____________________________________________________________________CITY______________________________________________STATE________ZIP__________ Pay by: ( )Mastercard ( )Visa ( ) Check or money order enclosed Account Number: |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__| Expiration Date:__________________Daytime Phone #:__________________________Signature (Credit Cards only):______________________________________________ OUR GUARANTEE: If you are not completely satisfied with any item you buy from us, return it in good condition within 30 days and we will refund your full purchase price. How This Software Differs from Vanilla's Complete Version The software contained here is very similar to the "cb" software available from Vanilla Software, except that certain functions are not provided due todisk space limitations. The most significant of these are: O "cbplus" - This program, which is included at no extra cost with the "cb" software, permits you to create and modify your own DCS-compatible cookbooks. "cbplus" is not provided here. O Adding personal comments - This function in "cb" is not available. O Terms - A glossary of commonly used cooking terms is also not available. A NOTE TO HARD DISK USERS If your system contains a hard disk drive, you will be able to use create a entire library of cookbooks on your hard disk and search all of them at one time without swapping floppies or reentering search criteria. This feature is standard with "cb". Many of Vanilla's customers have ordered theentire set of 25 cookbooks to put on their hard disks.
