  2. SAOimage pan and zoom
  3.  
  4. The loaded image may be panned and/or zoomed for its display in the
  5. central display window.  Panning and zooming are interactively
  6. controlled by clicking or dragging the mouse in the pan window.
  7. This is the small image window at the top of the desktop, next to
  8. the magnifier.
  9.  
  10. The pan window shows the entire area of the loaded image.  (By
  11. default the image in the pan window was reduced by taking the
  12. maximum value in each block of the original image, but averaging,
  13. summing, or subsampling may be used instead - see the cmdline
  14. section).  A box cursor in the pan window shows the area of the
  15. image currently being displayed in the main display window.  This
  16. box can be moved and sized just like the regular box cursor (but
  17. without angular rotation control).

  19. The left mouse button controls the location of the center of the
  20. box (the display image).  The middle button controls the edge of
  21. the box, for the given center, thus determining its size.  The
  22. size of the box is restricted to integer zoom factor.  (The
  23. actual algorithm choses the smallest zoom that still includes the
  24. mouse pointer's position.)  One can switch from one type of
  25. control to the other, by holding the first button down, until
  26. after the second button has been pressed.  The interaction
  27. can be cancelled by dragging the pointer outside of the pan
  28. window's borders.  Only after the last button is released is
  29. the main display redrawn, with the indicated pan and zoom.

  31. When the mouse is in the pan window, the area under the mouse
  32. pointer can be magnified in the magnifier by pressing or holding
  33. the shift key on the keyboard.  The "T" key table also works
  34. with the pointer in the pan window (see the keyboard section).
  35. As anywhere else, the arrow keys can be used for fine
  36. positioning.

  38. In pan mode, the same types of interactions as those used in
  39. the pan window can be performed in the main display window.
  40. Clicking or dragging with the left button controls the center
  41. of the display.  Clicking or dragging with the middle button
  42. determines the zoom factor.  The box cursor in the pan window
  43. tracks these manipulations as the mouse is dragged in the
  44. display window, just as it does when it is being directly
  45. manipulated in the pan window.

  47. The "pan" submenu allows a more basic method of changing the
  48. zoom (e.g. x4 or x1/2).  The center button centers the display
  49. on the image and the zoom 1 sets it to one display pixel per
  50. image pixel.
