  6. In some cases, changing the color setup may make your program easier to read (e.g. grayscale 
  7. notebook). Simply reinstall the HMA but choose "grayscale" or notebook setup at the "Options" screen.

  11. Printing In Windows 3.1
  12.  
  13. To print using the Windows version of the Home Medical Advisor, you must have a Windows 3.1
  14. supported printer driver installed.  Technically speaking, the HMA really does not print.  When
  15. you push the Print button inside the HMA, a Windows-owned dialog box appears used to select,
  16. and optionally configure, the printer.  After a print is started, the text being printed is sent to the
  17. Print Manager application.  From this point, Print Manager must not "drop the ball."  Most word
  18. processors and page publishers will not use Print Manager because they have their own printer
  19. drivers installed (that's what you paid for when you bought the software).  To keep the price of
  20. the HMA reasonable, we decided not to add our own drivers when Windows is already doing this
  21. expensive work for us.  If you can successfully print using another page publisher
  22. program (WordPerfect, AMI Pro, etc.), then choose the "Print To File" option on the Print dialog
  23. box and simply name the file as a *.txt file and save it to your hard disk (for example,
  24. sample.txt).  From this point, you may either bring that *.txt file into your favorite word processor
  25. for printing, or print it from a DOS prompt using the command PRINT SAMPLE.TXT.  Make sure
  26. you execute this command from the directory that contains the text file.  The DOS print will give you a draft
  27. (text) print and not a graphics (TrueType font) print.

  31. Changing Printer Text Fonts

  33. The printer font is Arial by default. If you want to print in other truetype
  34. fonts, see below.

  36. EXAMPLE
  37. If you want to print in the same font that is displayed on the screen 
  38. then you must modify your HMA.INI file.  Sample #1 is the way your
  39. HMA.INI looks if you used the default installation.  Modify the HMA.INI
  40. file to appear as Sample #2 if you want to print in Times New Roman.  This
  41. is most easily accomplished by cloning the end of the file, starting at 
  42. [DescriptiveText) and then changing it to [PrinterText].  Be careful,
  43. you must end up with a HMA.INI file that looks like the one in SAMPLE #2.

  45. Remember to save the file after any modifications and then relaunch the HMA
  46. as before.

  100. RE: Insufficient Memory under Windows 3.1
  101.  
  102. The Home Medical Advisor for Windows requires 4 MB of RAM memory for operation.
  103. Currently, Microsoft recommends at least 4 Mb of RAM (physical memory) for normal Windows
  104. 3.1 operation (many experts now recommend 8 MB).  If you operate the HMA without enough
  105. memory, you can receive a variety of error messages.  For example, you may see "Cannot
  106. convert images to bitmaps", "Cannot load data file headers", "General Protection Fault", or
  107. "Insufficient Memory" (among others).  All of these messages are saying the same thing:  there
  108. is not enough memory.
  109.  
  110. If you have a PC with only 2 MB of RAM you should get more memory.  A 1 MB RAM chipset is
  111. fairly inexpensive and is usually quite easy to install.  Contact your PC manufacturer for details
  112. on adding RAM memory.  If you do not know how much RAM memory is on your PC, then exit
  113. Windows and type MSD at the C: prompt and press the Enter key.  This diagnostic program
  114. (provided by Microsoft) will let you know several important facts about your PC.  You should
  115. familiarize yourself with your PC's configuration because it comes in handy on a regular basis.

  117. If you have a 4 MB (RAM) or more machine, try the following.  At Program Manager, pull down
  118. the Help menu and select 'About Program Manager...'.  This display will report your memory with
  119. Windows launched.  The number should be at least 2,900 KB to execute the HMA correctly (this
  120. number can vary based on  the percentage of system resources free).  This same display should
  121. also show you to be operating in the 386 enhanced mode (make sure you are).

  123. One way to increase your memory available to Windows is to increase your swap file size on
  124. hard disk.  Basically, this will take some of your hard disk space and allocate it for Windows.
  125. This is a cheap substitute for RAM memory.  Consult Microsoft and/or your Windows User
  126. Manual prior to making any memory adjustments to your PC.  Go to Control Panel and double-
  127. click on the "386 Enhanced" icon.  On the resulting screen, push the button marked Virtual
  128. Memory.  Now choose the Help button to see how you adjust your Virtual Memory.  Normally,
  129. you should have about 15-20 MB of your hard disk free to use a Permanent Swap File for
  130. Windows.  If your hard disk is "stacked" (for example, using DoubleSpace or Stacker), you must
  131. create a Temporary Swap File.  Windows will automatically recommend the largest swap file you
  132. can make, based on the amount of free space you have on disk.  After the adjustment is made,
  133. you must restart Windows.  Check your available memory under the Program
  134. Manager|Help|About Program Manager... (outlined above) to make sure your available memory
  135. has increased.  Try launching the HMA with your new adjustments.
