  1. MACINTOSH INSTALLATION:

  3. To install this font on a Macintosh you need only two of the files in this
  4. archive:
  5.  
  6. The PostScript file should be dropped into your System Folder. The
  7. PostScript file is the one named ╥GoudyHun╙.
  8.  
  9. The contents of the bitmap file should be installed into your System file
  10. with the Font/DA Mover version 3.8 or above. Use the standard procedure for
  11. installing a bitmap font file. The bitmap file is the one named
  12. ╥GoudyHundred.bmap╙. If you have trouble doing this, double check that you
  13. are using Font/DA Mover version 3.8 or above. When Font/DA Mover is
  14. running, you will see a number in the top left corner of the menu bar. If
  15. this number is 3.8 or greater, then you have a version of Font/DA Mover
  16. that will install GoudyHundred. If you have Suitcase II or MasterJuggler,
  17. follow their instructions for the installation of new fonts.

  19. All the other files you can ignore, unless you have Fontographer 3.0 or any
  20. later version or you have a PC.

  24. GoudyHundred Type 1 notes:
  25.  
  26. This typeface is a rendering of Frederick Goudy's Bertham type. The
  27. drawings and matrices were lost in a fire in 1939. The complete roman font
  28. is shown in Goudy's ╥Half Century of Type Design╙ (page 210). The font
  29. was named for Goudy's wife, Bertha.
  30.  
  31. So far as I know there is no companion italic. A very attractive
  32. alternative is to use small caps in place of italics. I have not provided
  33. small caps: these are usually provided (in the absence of the real thing)
  34. by scaling along the y-axis to achieve harmony with the lowercase, and a
  35. slight enlargement along the x-axis. This, in the case of Bertham, has not
  36. proved a very attractive approach. Use the normal smallcaps function of
  37. most word-processor/page-layout programs instead.

  39. The characters in GoudyHundred are faithful recreations of the characters
  40. in Bertham, save for a few concessions that I have made to 300dpi. I have
  41. slightly altered some curves so that they will not be the victims of undue
  42. stair-stepping, or ╘jaggedies╒. The only characters that I have created for
  43. GoudyHundred that were not in Bertham are the AE, OE, ae, oe ligatures,
  44. and, though they are to my mind successful, I do not insist upon them.
  45. Likewise, I know of no paragraph symbol for Bertham, so I expropriated one
  46. from a collection of typographic devices contained in the ╥Half Century of
  47. Type Design╙ (page 241); it seems to work well.

  49. The font included here is in fully ATM-compatible Type 1 format. Install as
  50. you would any other PostScript font. The Fontographer outline source file
  51. is also included so you can modify any of the characters of this font should you
  52. so wish. If you wish to preserve the font╒s Type 1 characteristics, you will
  53. need to have Fontographer 3.2 or later.

  56. NOTE FOR PC USERS:
  57.  
  58. Fontographer 3.2 now creates both a .PFB file and a .PFM file, both of
  59. which are necessary and sufficient for use with ATM for Windows. If you use
  60. a PC and have ATM for Windows, you can install the .PFB and .PFM files in
  61. their usual places and ATM will create your screen fonts for you.

  63. Since PCs are about a magnitude more complex than Macs, I can only tell you
  64. how and where I put *my* files and you'll have to figure out if this is the
  65. right place for you on your PC:

  67. 1. Put the .PFB file in your C:\PSFONTS directory. If you have any Adobe
  68. fonts, this directory will already be on your hard disk.
  69.  
  70. 2. Put the .PFM file in your C:\PSFONTS\PFM directory. If you have
  71. PageMaker for the PC installed, you will already have this directory.
  72.  
  73. 3. Open the ATM Control Panel and Add the GoudyHundred font to your font
  74. list.

  76. 4. Edit your WIN.INI file so that the .PFB file will download properly. Look
  77. at other downloadable font entries in the softfonts section of the PostScript
  78. printer entry for details on how to do this.
