  251. All sample files were created with an HP LaserJet IIIP printer
  252. selected.  All text uses the fonts available with that printer.
  253. If you print these charts using a different printer, the fonts
  254. may not map into optimal selections on that printer,
  255. especially if the smaller fonts are not available.

  259. Tips:
  260.  
  261. Fitting Text Into Symbols
  262. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  263. The size of text in a symbol is displayed most accurately at
  264. 100% scale. At reduced scales text may look as if it is too big
  265. for the symbol.  You can select the symbol in question and print it
  266. alone using the "Print Selection" Check box in the Print Chart dialog.
  267. This will give you a quick hard copy look at the symbol and text.
  268.  
  269.   Note:
  270.   ====
  271.   The file CHARTRFN.FON contains raster fonts that are used
  272.   to display very small text (i.e. at reduced scales).    As the display
  273.   scale is reduced, the actual fonts used by the symbol or line may
  274.   be replaced by these fonts (for display purposes only).  The result
  275.   is similar to "greek", in that the text is not particularly readable,
  276.   but it approximates the size it should be at the display scale. If for
  277.   some reason this font file is deleted from the application directory,
  278.   this "greek" effect will not operate.  To restore the font, just copy
  279.   the file back into the application directory from the distribution
  280.   disk.

  282. Making Symbols a Uniform Size
  283. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  284. To make several symbols the same size as any symbol in your chart, select
  285. the symbol with the desired size. (Say that you stretched that symbol
  286. to hold some text, and want all the other symbols to be the same size.)
  287. Choose the Options Default Symbol Size... command (There is a Tool Bar
  288. button for this command. See the manual), click on the Copy From Symbol
  289. button. Then click on OK.  Select the other symbols and choose the
  290. Symbol Reset Size command. (There is also a Tool Bar
  291. button for this command.)
  292.  
  293. Where the Tool Bar Icons Are Defined
  294. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  295. Each Tool Bar Icon button selects a command from the menu. To see
  296. what commands are tied to the Tool Bar, press F1 from the main Chartist
  297. Window. This brings up the top level Help Index for Chartist.  There is
  298. a Tool Bar Topic that you can click on, and that will tell you what you
  299. need to know.

  301. Routing Lines
  302. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  303. As described in the documentation, lines route automatically based on
  304. the designated entry and exit points on symbols, and the routing style.
  305. In complex charts, or in areas where symbol placement is constrained
  306. by the layout of the overall chart, lines may want to route "on top of"
  307. other symbols.
  308.  
  309. You can control this easily with the use of symbols with the "Titl-Cent"
  310. shape. Symbols with this shape are typically used for areas of text in
  311. the chart that do not need borders (such as titles, notes, etc). Symbols
  312. with this shape also have a special property with respect to lines:
  313.  
  314.   Any lines connected to a symbol with a Titl-Cent shape run
  315.   all the way to the center of that symbol, not just to the outside
  316.   boundary.
  317.  
  318. This means that you can use the Titl-Cent shape as a universal line
  319. connector/anchor. Just position the symbol where you need to turn a corner
  320. or otherwise constrain the routing of a line. Then run lines to and from
  321. this symbol as needed, using it as an anchor point. You can select individual
  322. lines and remove arrowheads if you want, for aesthetics.
  323.  
  324. Remember that the entry and exit points of a line with respect to a symbol
  325. are designated when you draw the line, by how close to one of the four sides
  326. of the symbol you are when you click the mouse button. So do not make the
  327. Titl-Cent shaped symbol you are using for a connector/anchor so small that
  328. you cannot draw lines conveniently into or out of it.

  332. Help File / Documentation Errata
  333. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  334. In the Tool Bar, the sample line and line font description
  335. are now side-by-side instead of stacked as shown in the Tool Bar Help
  336. Topic. This minor change was made recently to avoid clipping that text
  337. on very high resolution displays, where the buttons get small-ish.
  338.  
  339. The Accelerator Key for Symbol Reference... is Ctrl+F4, not Alt+F4
  340. as documented.

  344. Library Shapes
  345. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  346. A common question asked is about additional shapes to those
  347. available in the standard shape file. We generally add shapes to
  348. the shape file on user request. So far the additions have been very
  349. simple, and we have not charged extra for this service. Just about any
  350. shape that can be represented as one or more polygons or polylines
  351. can be quickly generated and added to the shape file. When you register
  352. just describe or sketch out the shape you want, and we will do our best
  353. to accomodate you.

  355. If you still want to "roll your own", there is a shape library technical
  356. document and support package available to registered users. Creating shapes
  357. is fairly technical, but the standard shape library provides many examples
  358. that you can build upon. The shape library technical document with 6 months
  359. of technical support for making shapes cost an extra $25 (plus applicable
  360. taxes).
