*** ABOUT MODNAMES: -------------------------------------------------------
With the advent of Creative Labs' SoundBlaster audio card, the Amiga
.MOD (Module) format of music is now very popular on the PC-compatible
scene. Most players on the PC lack a crucial item: a menu for selecting
the module to play. Now users of 4DOS or NDOS can see the titles and
file formats right in their directory listing!
MODNAMES is a utility only for users of 4DOS or NDOS. It creates a
DESCRIPT.ION file with the of modules information. When the 4DOS/NDOS
user does a single-column directory listing or uses the 4DOS/NDOS
SELECT feature, the titles and formats of the songs are displayed to
the right of the filenames.
*** USAGE: ----------------------------------------------------------------
There are many different extensions on modules, for example:
MOD NST STM STS OCT 669
When MODNAMES is run, any old DESCRIPT.ION file in the current
directory will be erased and a new one will be created.
MODNAMES defaults to listing ALL files in the current directory. If it
finds a file that it cannot identify, it will not add it to the
description file. If no files are added to the description file, it
will be deleted.
If you specify a filespec, i.e. *.MOD, then all files will be listed
regardless of whether or not they can be identified.
To process a directory, simply change to the directory where you store
your modules and run MODNAMES. You can't specify another directory -
only a file specification. Here's some sample output:
________
C:\MODS>MODNAMES *.mod
* Executing C:\MOD\MODNAMES.EXE
* MODNAMES v2.0 ■ (c) 1993.06.20 by Tom Rathborne of Totally Unlimited
* USAGE: MODNAMES [filespec]
■ Creating new DESCRIPT.ION file for *.mod
- Describing ECHOING.MOD as │ Echoing │ Sound/Noise/Pro
- Describing GONADSCR.MOD as │ Gonads Cracks │ Sound/Noise/Pro
- Describing SOWHAT.MOD as │ So What? │ Sound/Noise/Pro
- Describing VOCALIZE.MOD as │ Vocalize │ FastTracker 8-c
* MODNAMES is finished!
* MODNAMES is FREEWARE!
C:\MODS>
________
This process will create a DESCRIPT.ION file in the current dirctory
that will allow 4DOS/NDOS' single-column directory or SELECT to display
the titles and types of the songs beside the filenames.
If you don't keep all your modules with the .MOD extension, simply
enter a file specification (filespec) such as *.NST, *.STM, etc.
MODNAMES should work properly with any file format that stores the
title in the first 20 characters.
The only error checking done here is this; if no files are found, you
will get a message that looks something like this:
■ No files matching *.poo found
■ MODNAMES only works in the current directory!* MODNAMES is finished!
