  4.  File Commander/2 is intended to be an OS/2 2.x version of the popular Norton 
  5. Commander(tm) DOS program. It implements a subset of the features provided by 
  6. Norton Commander but adds some features of its own that are only possible under 
  7. OS/2 and some others that many people think NC should have had. 
  8.  
  9.  If, as an OS/2 user, you find yourself running NC in a DOS session to do your 
  10. file manipulation, File Commander/2 is the program you've been waiting for. See 
  11. Advantages over NC in a VDM for more details. 
  12.  
  13.  File Commander/2 can also be used as an alternate shell if you don't like GUI 
  14. shells like WPS (or don't have enough memory to run it) but want something a 
  15. bit better than the command line. The philosophy of the program was once 
  16. described as a 'supercharged CLI' which I think sums up FC/2 quite well (Thanks 
  17. Kurt :-).

  19.  For all those who've asked, I do intend to continue working on FC/2 for a 
  20. while yet so there should be several more versions to come. So feel free to 
  21. send me your suggestions for improvements and please report any bugs you 
  22. encounter.

  27.  File Commander/2 is copyrighted software. However, you are encouraged to copy 
  28. and share the software with others according to the following requirements:

  30.  File Commander/2 may be freely copied and shared with others, so long as no 
  31. charge is made for the software, and it is unmodified and copied in its 
  32. entirety, including program documentation. It may be distributed by electronic 
  33. means (modem, ftp etc), provided that all files are transmitted (archived) 
  34. together.

  36.  Notice that ShareWare is copyrighted software. It's not "Public Domain" 
  37. software, nor is it "free" software. If you continue to use this program beyond

  76.     charge huge fees for these, check first).

  78.  2. A cheque made out in your local currency for the equivalent of $35 
  79.     Australian (It costs me to cash foreign currency cheques at this end).

  81.  3. If you trust the postal service you can send cash in your local currency to

  142. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Advantages over NC in a VDM ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  143.  
  144. Why use File Commander/2 instead of Norton Commander in a DOS session? 
  145.  
  146. FC/2 offers the following benefits over Norton Commander in a VDM: 
  147.  
  148. o HPFS long filename support. Long names can be seen and used wherever you 
  149.   would expect. Also if no files are tagged, up to 36 characters of the current 
  150.   file name are displayed at the bottom of the panel. If a file name is too 
  151.   long to fit in the file name column of the panel, the first 12 characters are 
  152.   shown with an arrow indicating there is more. Also the case of file names 
  153.   isn't lost. 
  154.  
  155. o Can execute OS/2 programs (PM and text mode) as well as DOS and Windows 
  156.   programs. 
  157.  
  158. o Can spawn off child processes (Run commands in a separate session). 
  159.  
  160. o Doesn't hog CPU time when idle. 
  161.  
  162. o Better wildcards. 
  163.  
  164. o Copy/Move will handle a directory tree if the source file name is a 
  165.   directory. 
  166.  
  167. o Delete can remove an entire tree. 
  168.  
  169. o Starts up faster (no VDM to start). 
  170.  
  171. o Uses less system resources than a DOS session. (a VDM uses ~1MB of system 
  172.   memory).

  197. o F1: Brings up the online help (fc.inf) or the INF file(s) of your choice. 
  198.   (See Configuration) For this to work, fc.inf (or the files you specify) must 
  199.   be in a directory pointed to by the BOOKSHELF environment variable or be 
  200.   specified with their full path. 
  201.  
  202. o F2: Brings up the User Menu 
  203.  
  204. o F3: Views the current file with the viewer of your choice (defaults to 
  205.   internal). 
  206.  
  207. o Alt-F3: Views the current file with an alternate viewer of your choice. 
  208.   (Default is 'list') 
  209.  
  210. o Shift-F3: Prompts for a file name to view. 
  211.  
  212. o F4: Edits the current file with the editor of your choice (defaults to 
  213.   internal). 
  214.  
  215. o Alt-F4: Edits the current file with an alternate editor of your choice. 
  216.   (Default is 'e', the OS/2 system editor) 
  217.  
  218. o Shift-F4: Prompts for a file name to edit. Can be used to create a new file. 
  219.  
  220. o F5: Copies the current file or currently tagged files. Default destination 
  221.   directory is that of the opposite panel. 
  222.  
  223. o F6: As above but moves the file(s). 
  224.  
  225. o F7: Make a directory. You are prompted for the name of the directory. 
  226.  
  227. o F8: Delete current file or tagged files. There is a double confirmation on a 
  228.   tagged file delete. If you try to delete a non-empty directory, You will get 
  229.   a special confirmation box in which you must type "YES" exactly (in upper 
  230.   case). The entire directory tree from that directory downwards will then be 
  231.   deleted. Only do this if you are really REALLY sure! If you want to live 
  232.   dangerously, you can disable these confirmations from the 
  233.   Options/Confirmations dialog. 
  234.  
  235. o F9: Display menu bar. Once displayed you may use the left/right arrow keys to 
  236.   select a menu and the down arrow key to "drop" the menu. You can also drop a 
  237.   menu by pressing the key corresponding to the first letter of its name. Once 
  238.   dropped, you can move a cursor in the menu with the up/down cursor keys and 
  239.   use ENTER to select a menu item. Alternatively, you may select a menu item by 
  240.   pressing the key that is highlighted in the menu item's name. Menu items not 
  241.   yet implemented are greyed out and will not respond to selection. See Menu 
  242.   functions for more details. 
  243.  
  244. o F10: Exit File Commander/2. You must confirm this choice by pressing 'Y' or 
  245.   ENTER when asked 'Are you sure you want to exit FC/2 ?'. Mouse button 2 can 
  246.   also be used to confirm. Any other key, or mouse button 1, will cancel the 
  247.   exit. 
  248.  
  249. o Alt-F1: Select a new drive for the left panel. 
  250.  
  251. o Alt-F2: Select a new drive for the right panel. 
  252.  
  253. o Alt-F7: Finds a file or files that match the name you enter. You may include 
  254.   wildcard characters as described below under 'Grey-+' tagging. Once the 
  255.   search is complete, a list of matches is displayed. You may move around this 
  256.   list using the up and down arrow keys. Pressing ENTER will move the current 
  257.   panel to the directory of the file under the cursor and place the file cursor 
  258.   on the selected file. Pressing ESC removes the Find File panel with no 
  259.   action. ESC can also be used to stop the search. 
  260.  
  261. o Alt-F9: Switch between 25 and 50 line mode. 
  262.  
  263. o Ctrl-F1/F2: Switch off/on left or right panel. 
  264.  
  265. o Shift-F9: Save Setup. Rewrites the fc.ini file with current settings.

  268. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.2. Control keys ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  269.  
  270. o Ctrl-E: Scroll back through command history. Note that this wraps around. ie 
  271.   pressing Ctrl-E when the oldest command is showing will bring up the newest 
  272.   command. 
  273.  
  274. o Ctrl-F: Insert name of current file with its full path into the command line. 
  275.  
  276. o Ctrl-J: Insert name of current file into command line or, if there is an 
  277.   alphanumeric character before the cursor, searches history. Note that only 
  278.   text before the cursor is used when looking for a match in history. Note also 
  279.   that if pressed again, the next match from history will be recalled. This key 
  280.   alters the history position used by Ctrl-E and Ctrl-X. 
  281.  
  282. o Ctrl-Enter: Same as Ctrl-J. 
  283.  
  284. o Ctrl-L: Toggles drive information panel on/off. Shows drive total space, free 
  285.   space, number of files and total bytes occupied by current directory, the 
  286.   drive's label, file system and serial number. 
  287.  
  288. o Ctrl-O: Turn panels On/Off. Useful if you want to see the output of the 
  289.   program you just ran or if you just want a command line for a while. 
  290.  
  291. o Ctrl-R: Re-read the current panel. (Useful if you changed a floppy or if 
  292.   another process has altered the directory contents.) 
  293.  
  294. o Ctrl-U: Swap left and right panels. 
  295.  
  296. o Ctrl-X: Scroll forward through command history. 
  297.  
  298.  
  299. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.3. Cursor Movement keys ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  300.  
  301. o Home: Moves cursor to the first file on the panel. 
  302.  
  303. o End: Moves cursor to the last file on the panel. 
  304.  
  305. o Ctrl-Home: Moves command line cursor to the start of the line. 
  306.  
  307. o Ctrl-End: Moves command line cursor to the end of the line. 
  308.  
  309. o Ctrl-Backspace: Deletes word to the left of the cursor. 
  310.  
  311. o Cursor Up/Down: Moves the cursor up or down one file name. Will scroll window 
  312.   if necessary. Also if panels are off, scrolls through history. 
  313.  
  314. o Cursor Left/Right: Moves the command line cursor, or if "Brief" view is 
  315.   selected, moves cursor over one column. 
  316.  
  317. o Ctrl-Left/Right: Moves the command line cursor one word left or right. 
  318.  
  319. o Alt-Left/Right: Moves the command line cursor, regardless of panel mode. This 
  320.   allows you to move the command line cursor when the current panel is in brief 
  321.   view. 
  322.  
  323. o Page Up/Down: Moves up or down a page of files. 
  324.  
  325. o Ctrl-PageUp: Move to the parent of the current directory. 
  326.  
  327. o Ctrl-PageDown: Move into the directory the cursor is on. This works like 
  328.   pressing ENTER except it won't try to execute anything you've typed on the 
  329.   command line.

  331.  
  332. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.4. Storing/Retrieving paths ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  333.  
  334.  To make directory navigation easier, you can store the current directory path 
  335. in one of ten 'slots'. At a later point in time you may recall the directory 
  336. which causes the current panel to instantly move to the stored directory. 
  337.  
  338. o To store the current directory, hold down Ctrl and Shift then press one of 
  339.   keys 0-9 on the numeric keypad. 
  340.  
  341. o To retrieve a directory, hold down Ctrl then press one of keys 0-9 on the 
  342.   numeric keypad. 
  343.  
  344.  You can also preset the contents of the 'slots' in the fc.ini file using 
  345. statements in the form: 
  346. dx=d:\path 
  347. where the 'x' is 0-9 and specifies which key will activate the directory. 
  348. Alternatively you can set the directories and then save them to fc.ini using 
  349. the Options/Save Setup command. 
  350.  
  351.  
  352. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.5. Miscellaneus ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  353.  
  354. o Esc: Clear command line. 
  355.  
  356. o Tab: Switch cursor between panels. 
  357.  
  358. o Enter: Execute command line, or if command line is empty, execute current 
  359.   file. If the file matches an association, then the program associated with it 
  360.   will be used on the file (See Configuration). If the cursor is on a 
  361.   directory, FC/2 will change into that directory. 
  362.  
  363. o Alt-Enter: Same as above but the executable is run in a separate session. 
  364.  
  365. o Insert: Tag/Untag current file and move cursor down. 
  366.  
  367. o Ctrl-\: Moves to the root directory of the current drive. 
  368.  
  369. o Alt-letter/number: Holding down ALT and typing a partial file name will move 
  370.   the cursor to the first file matching that partial name. 
  371.  
  372. o Grey +: Tag files by wildcard. Note that this uses REAL wildcards. ie: 
  373.  
  374.     "*" matches EVERYTHING 
  375.     "*x*" matches everything with an 'x' in it 
  376.     "??*" matches everything with 2 or more characters 
  377.     "[a-c]*" matches files starting with a,b or c 
  378.     "[^a-c]* matches files NOT starting with a, b or c 
  379.     "[a-d^c]*" matches files starting with a,b or d 
  380.  
  381. o Grey -: Same as above, only UNTAGS. 
  382.  
  383. o Grey *: Inverts selection. ie all tagged files become untagged and vice 
  384.   versa. Can be used as a quick way to tag all files when no files are tagged.

  387. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Menu Functions ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  388.  
  389. The following menu items have been implemented so far: 
  390.  
  391. Left/Right: 
  392.  
  393.    Brief  - change left/right panel to brief file view. 
  394.  
  395.    Full  - change left/right panel to full detail file view. 
  396.  
  397.    Wide  - change left/right panel to wide view (good when there are many long 
  398.    file names in a directory). 
  399.  
  400.    Info  - make left/right panel display drive info for opposite panel (or 
  401.    switch back to normal if already on). 
  402.  
  403.    On/Off - Switch left/right panel on or off. 
  404.  
  405.    Name/Extension/Time/Size/Unsorted - Sort panel according to selected key. 
  406.  
  407.    Re-Read - Re-read the contents of panel (same as Ctrl-R) 
  408.  
  409.    Filter - Edit the filename filter for a panel. The filter can contain 
  410.    several, space separated file masks. 
  411.  
  412.    Drive  - Select a new drive for panel (same as Alt-F1/F2) 
  413.  
  414. Files:    Same functions as F1-F10, Grey-+/-/*. 
  415.  
  416. Commands: 
  417.  
  418.    Find File - Search disk for a file or files (same as Alt-F7) 
  419.  
  420.    EGA Lines - Switch between 25 and 50 line mode (same as Alt-F9) 
  421.  
  422.    Swap Panels - swap left and right panels (same as Ctrl-U) 
  423.  
  424.    Panels On/Off - Show/remove panels (same as Ctrl-O) 
  425.  
  426.    Compare Directories - Tags files that aren't in the opposite panel's 
  427.    directory, or are newer than the copy in the opposite directory. 
  428.  
  429.    Register - Allows you to enter your name and serial number (which you 
  430.    receive when you register) to disable reminder messages. Also your name will 
  431.    appear in the Info panel instead of 'Unregistered Version'. 
  432.  
  433. Options: 
  434.  
  435.    Configuration - Brings up a panel that allows you to change configuration 
  436.    options. Changes made here have immediate effect but will be lost on exit 
  437.    unless you use the Options/Save Setup command. For more informaion on what 
  438.    the fields do, see Configuration Keywords. Use the cursor Up/Down keys or 
  439.    the mouse to select an option to alter and the spacebar to toggle non-string 
  440.    values. 
  441.  
  442.    Colours - Brings up a panel that allows you to alter the program's colours. 
  443.    Use the cursor keys to move the arrow to point to the item you wish to 
  444.    change then press 'f' to change the foreground colour or 'b' to change the 
  445.    background. You can also click mouse button 1 on an item to select it. 
  446.    Clicking button 2 will accept any changes you have made and clicking button 
  447.    1 outside of the window will dismiss the window, forgetting any changes. Use 
  448.    Options/Save Setup if you want the changes to be permanent. 
  449.  
  450.    Confirmations - Allows you to disable the more common confirmation prompts. 
  451.    A list of confirmation types is displayed with check boxes which you can 
  452.    toggle with the spacebar. When done, press Enter or mouse button 2 to enter 
  453.    the changes. To forget the changes, press ESC or click mouse button 1 
  454.    outside the confirmations window. Disable confirmations at your own risk! 
  455.    Save changes with Options/Save Setup 
  456.  
  457.    Hidden Files - Toggles the display of hidden files in the file panels. 
  458.  
  459.    Path Prompt - Toggles the display of the current path in the command line 
  460.    prompt. 
  461.  
  462.    Full Screen - Toggle between full and half height panels. 
  463.  
  464.    Clock - show/remove clock. 
  465.  
  466.    Save Setup - Saves the current configuration to the fc.ini file. 
  467.  
  468.  
  469. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Using the Mouse ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  470.  
  471. You can use the mouse to perform the following operations: 
  472.  
  473. o Select a file by clicking button 1 on a file name. 
  474.  
  475. o Tag/Untag a file by clicking button 2 on it. 
  476.  
  477. o Execute a file or change into a directory by double clicking button 1 on it. 
  478.  
  479. o Scroll the files up or down by clicking button 1 on the line directly above 
  480.   or below the files. 
  481.  
  482. o Tag several files by holding down button 2 and moving the mouse. If, while 
  483.   button 2 is pressed, the mouse is moved onto the line above or below the file 
  484.   list, the panel will scroll, tagging all files that pass by. 
  485.  
  486. o Select a function to perform by clicking on the function bar at the bottom of 
  487.   the screen. Using button 2 Selects the Alt function. This is particularly 
  488.   handy for changing drives (Alt-F1/F2). 
  489.  
  490. o Activate the menu by clicking button 2 on the top line of the screen. The 
  491.   easiest way to make a selection is to hold button 2 down after activating the 
  492.   menu, "pull down" the menu you want and release button 2 when you have the 
  493.   correct item highlighted. Clicking outside the menu area will dismiss the 
  494.   menu. 
  495.  
  496. o Whenever a dialog popup appears that contains push buttons that look like "[ 
  497.   OK ]", you may click on these with mouse button 1 to select the indicated 
  498.   choice. Clicking button 2 will select the highlighted button. 
  499.  
  500. o Whenever a dialog popup appears that requests a string input (eg Make 
  501.   Directory), button 1 may be used to position the cursor on the line and 
  502.   button 2 is equivalent to pressing ENTER. Clicking button 1 outside the 
  503.   dialog box or on a Cancel button, cancels the operation. 
  504.  
  505. o When the results of a 'Find File' operation are showing, double clicking 
  506.   button 1 on a file name will cause FC/2 to jump to the directory the file is 
  507.   in (like pressing ENTER). The window can be scrolled by clicking on the top 
  508.   or bottom lines of the window. 
  509.  
  510. o When using the internal file viewer, clicking button 1 in the top or bottom 
  511.   third of the screen scrolls the screen up/down. Using button 2 pages up or 
  512.   down. 
  513.  
  514. o When using the internal editor, the mouse may be used to position the cursor 
  515.   on the currently displayed page. 
  516.  
  517.  
  518. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. The Internal Viewer ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  519.  
  520.   The file viewer built into FC/2 is a basic text viewer that is perfect for 
  521. taking a quick look at your text files. You can use the mouse or keyboard to 
  522. scroll the text up and down (Keys: Cursor-Up/Down, Page Up/Down, Home, End). 
  523. When the mouse is being used to scroll the text, the speed of scrolling is 
  524. determined by the 'scrolldelay' configuration directive. 
  525.  
  526. o If a line is longer than 80 columns it will be chopped off at that lenght and 
  527.   the remainder placed one the next line. 
  528.  
  529. o You can search for a string using F7 (or Shift-F7 to find next). The search 
  530.   is case insensitive. The searching is much faster than the NC internal viewer 
  531.   (though that's not hard....). 
  532.  
  533. o Will correctly interpret UNIX, PC or MAC line terminators (LF, CR/LF, CR) 
  534.  
  535. o I think I've got all the bugs out of it but if you ever think it has become 
  536.   confused, pressing Ctrl-L will repaint the screen. 
  537.  
  538.  
  539. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. The Internal Editor ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  540.  
  541.  The built in editor is a very simple editor that allows you to make quick 
  542. changes to any plain text file. 
  543.  
  544. o Like the viewer, the editor will read a file using any type of line 
  545.   terminator. When the file is written, however, all lines will be CR/LF 
  546.   terminated. 
  547.  
  548. o Although there is no limit on the size of file you can edit, keep in mind

  567.  The user menu is a list of functions defined by you to help you carry out 
  568. common tasks. To create a user menu you need to create a plain text file (using 
  569. an editor like the OS/2 System editor "e.exe" or FC/2's internal editor) named 
  570. fc.mnu in the same directory as fc.exe. Here is an example user menu file: 
  571.

  581.  A line that starts in the first column is a description line. The key used to

  584. will appear in the menu when it is displayed.

  586.  Any line that starts with a space or tab is a command and will be executed 
  587. when the preceding description is chosen from the menu.

  592. o If you use 4os2 as your command interpreter, try to keep the contents of your 
  593.   4start.cmd to a minimum as it is run every time you execute an external 
  594.   command in FC/2. 
  595.  
  596. o The fastest way to select a new drive for a panel using the mouse is to click 
  597.   the right mouse button on F1/F2 in the help bar at the bottom of the screen. 
  598.  
  599. o If you want to change directories using a tree, you can run the utility VCD 
  600.   from the FC/2 command line. You will probably be able to find this utility in 
  601.   the same archives/BBSs as you found FC/2. Look for the file vcd10.zip 
  602.  
  603. o If you attach 4DOS/4OS2 descriptions to your files, they will be preserved if 
  604.   you copy or move them using FC/2.

  609.  Configuration is done with the file fc.ini which must be in the same directory 
  610. as fc.exe. If you rename fc.exe you must also rename fc.ini to match. As all 
  611. options are now configurable within FC/2 and saveable with Options/Save Setup, 
  612. you shouldn't need to edit this file except for adding / changing the 
  613. associations. 
  614.  
  615.  You may specify an alternate .ini file for FC/2 to use by naming it on the 
  616. command line. If the named file does not yet exist, the default .ini file will 
  617. be read but Save Setup will write the new file name. This allows you to easily 
  618. create another configuration that is only slightly different to your normal 
  619. configuration. 
  620.  
  621. The file fc.ini contains statements in the form: 
  622.  
  623. keyword=value 
  624.  
  625. to set a configuration setting (see Configuration keywords for valid forms) or 
  626.  
  627. wildcard:program [switches] [! switches] 
  628.  
  629. to create an association. The effect of this is to use "program" on any file 
  630. matching "wildcard" when ENTER is pressed on the file. A '!' character on the 
  631. right of the ':' will be replaced by the file name when "program" is executed. 
  632. If there is no '!', the file name will be added to the end. This is useful if 
  633. you need parameters AFTER the file name.

  697. o leftstyle,rightstyle=brief|full|wide Sets the display type for left and right 
  698.   panels. Default is full.

  700. o lines Sets the number of lines on screen at startup. Can be 21, 25, 28, 43, 
  701.   50 or 60 for full screen sessions or any value of at least 21 for a windowed 
  702.   session. Using a number that is not one of those listed for a full screen 
  703.   session will result in the number of lines being set to the next value up.

  705. o mouspeed Sets the mouse speed (sensitivity) for fullscreen sessions. The 
  706.   default is 8 with smaller numbers making the mouse faster, larger numbers 
  707.   slower.

  709. o numlock=on|off  Specifies if numlock should be fixed on or not. Affects both 
  710.   FC/2 and any program started by FC/2 unless it is in a separate session.

  712.   Note:  This does NOT work for a windowed session as PM keeps its own idea of 
  713.   keylock status.

  715. o right  directory that the right panel starts in. Defaults to current 
  716.   directory.

  718. o saver  Specifies number of minutes before the screen saver starts. Using 
  719.   saver=0 (the default) disables the screen saver. The screen saver only 
  720.   activates in a full screen session.

  722. o scrolldelay  If you find that scrolling using the mouse goes too fast, use 
  723.   this directive to specify a delay (in milliseconds) between each line 
  724.   scrolled. I find 5 is a good value. This directive only affects full screen 
  725.   sessions as windowed sessions usually need all the speed they can get.

  727. o timemode=12|24  You can use this to specify 24 hour time for file time stamp 
  728.   display if you don't have the clock on initially. It also affects the mode 
  729.   the clock will be in if switched on from the menu.

  732.   file viewer.
