  21. Development Technologies, Inc. (DevTech) is proud to announce DeskMan/2, the
  22. first and only tool designed to manage the OS/2 Workplace Shell; the potent new
  23. object oriented user interface that helps put OS/2 years ahead of its
  24. competition!  For the first time, the Workplace Shell desktop can be backed up,
  25. restored, migrated and otherwise managed, all by using a simple Drag and Drop
  26. interface.  This can be done with one or more individual Workplace Shell
  27. objects, or on the whole desktop, with a single command.
  28.  
  29. DeskMan/2 is fully functional on all versions of OS/2 from OS/2 2.0 plus SOMFIX
  30. through OS/2 2.0 plus ServicePak and up to OS/2 2.1 GA.  It will not only
  31. provide forward compatibility, but also backward compatibility, as necessary.
  32. It is CUA-compliant, providing the OS/2 user with a familiar user interface.
  33.  
  34. DeskMan/2 is fully functional on both FAT and HPFS systems, although HPFS
  35. systems do naturally operate at faster speeds.

  37. DeskMan/2 is THE product for managing the Workplace Shell.  Just consider how
  38. YOU might use DeskMan/2:

  40. You are an OS/2 user with a single Workplace Shell desktop.
  41.  
  42.     Backup and Restore your Workplace Shell desktop.

  44.     Share Workplace Shell objects with other users.
  45.  
  46.     Create a library of icon files for every object on your desktop.

  48.     Delete objects which the built-in Shredder will not delete.

  50.     Query objects for their settings to learn more about them.

  74.     using beta versions of OS/2 who wish to upgrade to OS/2 2.1 GA, as IBM
  75.     technical support personnel have said that such users will need to reformat
  76.     their OS/2 boot volumes.

  107. First Time Installation
  108. ___________________________________________
  109.  
  110. If you are installing DeskMan/2 for the first time, please use the following
  111. simple procedure, for best results.  In the examples below, the diskette in
  112. Drive A: is a copy of the original DeskMan/2 diskette, and the product is being
  113. installed on Drive C:.
  114.  
  115.     1) Make sure the original program diskette is locked - the sliding tab is
  116.     up, and the hole is clear.
  117.  
  118.     2) Make a backup copy of the original program disk.  Store the original
  119.     distribution diskette in a safe place.
  120.         For example: DISKCOPY A: A:
  121.  
  122.     3) Using the copy of the DeskMan/2 diskette, copy all of the files present
  123.     on the diskette into a directory on the hard drive, whether temporary or
  124.     not.
  125.         For example: MD DESKMAN2
  126.                      COPY A:\*.* C:\DESKMAN2\*.* /V
  127.  
  128.     4) Install DeskMan/2 on the local system.  Additional information on this
  129.     may be found in the DESKMAN.INF file.  To review it, type VIEW DESKMAN at
  130.     an OS/2 command prompt, while in the proper directory.
  131.         For example: CD \DESKMAN2
  132.                      VIEW DESKMAN2
  133.                      INSTALL
  134.  
  135.     5) After running the INSTALL program, selecting INSTALL, and entering your
  136.     customer name, DeskMan/2 should now be installed.  Double-click the small
  137.     icon in the upper left corner of the installation window to terminate the
  138.     installation process.  You should now have two new icons on your desktop.
  139.     The first is the DeskMan/2 icon.  The second is the DeskMan/2 User's Guide.
  140.     If there are any additional questions about DeskMan/2, the User's Guide
  141.     should provide the answers.  It is strongly suggested that users read
  142.     through the Introduction, Getting Started, and Online Tutorial sections.
  143.  
  144. NOTE: If you are using OS/2 2.1 GA, please make sure that you have applied
  145. all available OS/2 patches and fixes before installing DeskMan/2.  This
  146. specifically includes the fixes contained within 21WPSF.ZIP found on
  147. CompuServe, OS2BBS, and elsewhere.

  150. Upgrading DeskMan/2
  151. ___________________________________________
  152.  
  153. This procedure assumes that you are upgrading from DeskMan/2, version 1.00 or
  154. version 1.01, to version 1.10.  It further assumes that you still have your
  155. original program diskette, plus an archive called DM2110.ZIP, which contains a
  156. copy of this file, as well as the appropriate patch files to update your
  157. current version of DeskMan/2 to the latest version of DeskMan/2.  If you know
  158. which version of DeskMan/2 you are currently using, you could substitute a
  159. smaller, version specific archive, such as DM2100.ZIP (1.00->1.10) or
  160. DM2101.ZIP (1.01->1.10), in place of the larger, more general DM2110.ZIP.
  161.  
  162. This procedure will update your DeskMan/2 master files, but will not affect any
  163. DeskMan/2 files in use, until you reinstall DeskMan/2 in step 6.  It may be
  164. necessary to shut down and restart the system in step 6, if DeskMan/2 has been
  165. used after the system was last booted.
  166.  
  167.   1) Create a directory on your hard disk.
  168.                    For example:  MD C:\DESKMAN2
  169.   2) Copy all the files from your diskette into this new directory.
  170.                    For example:  COPY A:\*.* C:\DESKMAN2\*.* /V
  171.   3) Place the archive, DM2110.ZIP, into the new directory.
  172.                    For example:  Download DM2110.ZIP into C:\DESKMAN2
  173.   4) Unzip all files in the archive.
  174.                    For example:  PKUNZIP DM2110.ZIP
  175.   5) Apply the update.
  176.                    For example:  UPDATE
  177.   6) Your new directory now contains your updated DeskMan/2 files.  Please
  178. back them up and reinstall DeskMan/2.
  179.                    For example:  COPY C:\DESKMAN2\*.* A:\*.* /V
  180.                                  INSTALL
  181.  
  182. NOTE: If you are using OS/2 2.1 GA, please make sure that you have applied
  183. all available OS/2 patches and fixes before installing DeskMan/2.  This
  184. specifically includes the fixes contained within 21WPSF.ZIP found on

  187.   7) After installing the new version of DeskMan/2, please check the
  188. settings notebook to verify that your settings are set as desired.  We
  189. recommend that all REXX generation be turned off unless required, and that
  190. both icon and data-file saves be enabled.  We STRONGLY recommend that you
  191. set aside one or more directories for use solely by DeskMan/2's save and
  192. restore features.  Close the settings notebook.
  193.  
  194. IMPORTANT! File references were changed from version 1.00 to version 1.01, so
  195. please follow the next steps carefully:
  196.  
  197.   8) Change your directory to the directory that contains your saved object
  198. description file(s).  For example:  CD \DESKMAN
  199.  
  200.   9) Verify that you have only DeskMan/2's .DRC saved object description
  201. files and other internal files in your directory.  To do this, you can
  202. compare the files you see on a directory listing with the files referenced
  203. by the pathnames in the DeskMan/2 notebook settings.  If you see only
  204. DESKMAN.DRC, or that plus any of the following: DESKMAN.IRC, DESKMAN.CMD,
  205. DESKMANI.CMD, or DESKMAN.LOG files; along with a bunch of files that look
  206. like the names of objects which you see in your Templates folder, you're
  207. fine.  Go to step 10.  If you do not see this, open your DRIVES folder,
  208. open the drives object that contains the directory where you have your
  209. saved object description files, and examine that directory through the
  210. graphical interface.  If you see the files mentioned above, then continue
  211. with step 10, otherwise skip to step 11.
  212.  
  213. 10) To make sure that you start out with a clean system, we're going to
  214. delete your .DRC, .CMD, and data-file files from this directory.  Be sure
  215. to delete these files only if you are not using this directory for any
  216. other purpose than storing DeskMan/2's various storage files.  If you are
  217. storing your icons in this directory, go ahead and delete them if you wish.
  218. If you are storing your icons in a subdirectory, go ahead and delete them
  219. from that subdirectory too, if you want to remove the saved icon files.
  220. Note that this has no effect upon existing objects' icons, only upon saved
  221. icons and icons not in use that are saved in the same directory.  Please
  222. note that using the CLEANUP.CMD file to remove non-referenced data-files
  223. and icons can also remove icons stored with DeskMan/2's saved icons in
  224. order to merge icon libraries.  If you have merged icon libraries, it is
  225. suggested that you back them up before using CLEANUP.CMD.
  226.  
  227. 11) Save your desktop, automatically recreating your saved object files and
  228. placing copies of your icons and data-file objects into the appropriate
  229. sub-directories.
  230.  
  231. 12) Congratulations, you're now using an updated version of DeskMan/2!

  276. an HPFS to a FAT to an HPFS file system, you must NOT USE COPY or XCOPY!
  277. Use the Drag & Drop routines from the Drives folder, because otherwise the
  278. information on the long file names will not be retained.

  281. icons and data-files when mapping from one drive onto another.  Both are
  282. off by default.

  373. If duplicates are found, a message is displayed: "DeskMan/2 detected and
  374. corrected duplicate object IDs!"  Note: the default WPS object IDs (<WP_...>)
  375. will NOT be changed.  Note: WPS has a bug and will create duplicate object ID
  376. even without DeskMan/2's participation. Example: create a folder, select
  377. another folder which contains other folders. Verify that the object selected
  378. has an object ID and the one contained in it has one, too. Copy the selected
  379. folder to the one newly created.  Verify object IDs. On GA+SP the copies and
  380. the originals will retain their object IDs. In 2.1 GA, the folder copied will
  381. loose its object ID but the folders contained in it, will still have their old
  382. object IDs.

  384. Changed: PerformSaveSettings setup string added. Current DeskMan/2 settings
  385. will be saved. This is usefull when performing remote operations - the settings
  386. can be changed by using the setup strings. They will be restored to their
  387. previous values after the system is re-booted. To save them,
  388. PerformSaveSettings can be used.

  391. exists and the Restore if exists option is used. This will allow to avoid most
