|"CO04E019 CO05E009 ~ 1/10/96 1/14/96 970 925-1940 Winterskol Carnival 0 ~ Call for Information Aspen Mountain ~ Aspen has thrown a dazzling winter carnival for 45 years, and this season's "Wintersk÷l" will be held from Wednesday, January 10 through Sunday January 14, 1995.
The first Wintersk÷l celebration in January 1951, was held by local residents to shake the mid-winter doldrums. Today, Wintersk÷l is an elaborate four-day festival with a wacky community parade, an ice show featuring Olympic and World Champion skaters, a snow sculpture contest, and many fun events at the four Aspen ski areas. Wintersk÷l's highlight is the Saturday night torchlight parade of local skiers and the fireworks over Aspen Mountain.
Each day of the celebration focuses on a different ski area. Saturday is traditionally Aspen Mountain Day, and the whole town gets involved. Staying true to their high-brow sensibilities, locals come out in droves for the morning Canine Fashion Show, where first place is awarded to the best-dressed dog. At noon, the community Wintersk÷l Parade brings music, floats, costumes and lots of laughter to the streets of Aspen.
Following the parade is the Winter Carnival for children including snowshoe races, sleigh rides, face painting, cookie decorating, and the Winter Carnival "Toy Shop." Aspen Mountain hosts the annual Continental Cup ski race to benefit the Aspen Camp School for the Deaf. After the race, Aspen's Silver Circle Skating Party includes outdoor ice skating and the Continental Cup Awards Ceremony.
