OCR: First Bahau Settlers Are Elated Domei. BAHAU, Dec. 31 .- Expressions of pleasant surprise were . visible on the faces of the first batch of Catholic settlers from Syonan as they viewed their new, settle- ment on their arrival here. "How unlike the-stuffy backlanes of congested Syonan," observed one as he "inspected, the"barrack quarters. "My wife will be pleased with the romance of this rural scenery." declared another. "I feel clated at the opportunity offer- ed to me to be one of the pioneers who will be responsible in helping Malal take a' prodigious step toward ; self- sufficiency in foodstuffs." philosophised a third. After thus expressing their Individual impressions they voiced their Gctermination to work hard and en- hance the prosperity of the colony. . The first batch of settlers consist- ing of about 150 persons, mostly bache- lers. were accompanied by M. Shino- zaki, Kosel-ka Cho, Syonan, Bishop Devals and some officials of the Gun- seikan Bu, Syonan. Among them are carpenters, technicians, priests, medical men, anti-malarial experts, etc. These men will put up country huts with the assistance of the Negri Sembilan Gov- ernment, do anti-malarial work and instal other necessary facilities so that their families and colleagues when they arrive . may find the settlement fortable. Further batches are expect- com- ed on the 5th. 16th, 26th. and 31st of January and in February. AMENITIES PROVIDED On their arrival the settlers after being entertained to tiffin were dis- tributed with foodstuffs, mosquito nets ,. : cigarettes, agricultural imple- ments, and Household utensils. Among the settlers who have arrived and will arrive in the future are, and will be, lawyers, doctors, teachers, etc. They are coming here not because they are unhappy in Syonan but because .they feel it their duty to help the Ad- ministration, in solving .. the foodstuffs problem in Malaty. As such this colony at: Bahau is. a striking . instance of Catholic co-operation; stated Mr. M. Bhinozaki, when interviewed. A member of the next batch, Mr. Shiozaki added, would be Mr. H .: M. de Souza, Inspector of Schools, Syonan, who had resigned his post with a view to assisting the settlers. His wide knowledge of agriculture would be a great asset to the Colony, he explained Mr. Shinozaki assured, that settlers could look up to the Gunselkan Bu Syonan, as a father who would pro vide them all assistance.
