OCR: World Red Swastika Society Extends Charity Work To New Syonan TWO YEARS' GOOD WORK REVIEWED By Syonan Shimbun Staff Reporter A CONSIDERABLE amount cf good work has been done in NE Syonan by the World Red Swas- tika Society in the past two years The Society has helped thousands of people, giving free medical attention to the poor and distributing free rice and substitute foodstuffs to the people from the various centres established by the Society. The scope of the Society's work can be classed into two categories, viz: permanent relief such as the establish- ment of hospitals. schools, clinics and other undertakings for the welfare 01 those in distress; and temporary relfet like free medical attention, housing, financial aid and distribution of food- stuffs to the poor In March 2602, six clinics for free treatment by Chinese and medicines were established Western the Society in Syonan, by Towards the close of the same year. the Society opened a small Paupers Hospital at Jalan Ampas for those seriously ill or dying, About the same time a dressing clinic was opened at the Thian Hok Keong Temple in Telok Ayer Street. Recently, the Society has its charitable work to New extended where it has a branch to look after Syonan the welfare of the settlers. It is learn- ed that, in the near future. a party of relief workers will be sent to the settlement to further assist the Health Department of the Oversea-Chinese Association.
